In this research,the relationships between transferrin types and some wool characteristics in Akkaraman and Anatolian Merino ewes were investigated.The separation of transferrin types was carried out with horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis in a discontinuous system.There was no statistical relationship between transferrin types and wool characteristics.

A survey was conducted to determine the prevalence of rotavirus, Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 in healthy dairy cattle herds in Van and environs, Turkey. Some of the cattle herds had a history of recurrent neonatal diarrhoea for previous years, and even while sampling was being done, some newborn calves were diarrhoeic. Three hundred and twelve faecal specimens from dairy cattle farms free of clinically apparent diarrhoea were tested both for the presence of rotaviruses by PAGE silver staining and for Escherichia coli K99 and O157:H7 by latex agglutination using specific antisera after the growth of each colony. Seroprevalence Of Toxoplasmosis Gondii In Sheep In Yozgat, Turkey, Cahi̇t Babür, Berri̇n Esen, Gülay Vural

The sera collected from 152 sheep older than one year old sheep in various parts of Yozgat Province were tested for Toxoplasma gondii antibodies using the Sabin- Feldman dye test. Out of the 152 sera examined, 69 (45.4%) were seropositive at different dilutions (34 samples at 1/16, 21 at 1/64, 11 at 1/256 and 3 at 1/1024).

This study, was carried out to reveal the comparative production performances and effects of some environmental factors on the production characteristics of Chios and İmroz ewes kept in a single flock and semi-intensive conditions in Çanakkale-Kumkale state farm. In this part of the study, the fertility rate, survival rate and growth of lambs are given. For the Chios ewes, pregnancy, parturition, single and multiple parturition rates, lamb rates and litter size on the basis of number of ewes assigned for mating were 97.71%, 97.46%, 23.76%, 60.83% and 15.41%, 188.55% and 1.93 respectively. The aim of this study is to determine the copper, zinc and selenium levels of blood serum and the Cu and Zn levels of wool of healthy Akkaraman ewes grazed in the meadows in the Diyarbakır region. This study was carried out in cattle in Elazığ, Malatya and Tunceli provinces between May 1997 and March 1998 to determine the seroprevalence of Babesia species. Serum samples were collected from a total of 741 cattle in Elazığ, Malatya, Tunceli and vicinities. Serum antibodies against Babesia bigemina, Babesia bovis and Babesia divergens were investigated by Indirect Fluorescence Antibody (IFA) test. Average heterozygosity (h^-_s), F-statistics and genetic distance (d_ij) of different Brown Swiss cattle herds in Turkey (Malya, Konuklar and Anadolu State Farms, Eskişehir Sugar Factory Farm and Van Agriculture Secondary School Farm) were compared with each other by using Hb, Tf, Am-I, Am-II and Cp (monomorphic) loci. The aim of the present study was to define the reference values for erythrocyte and liver tissue glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), glutathione peroxidase (GPX), glutathione reductase (GR) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) activities and also reduced glutathione (GSH) levels in order to obtain basal data for subsequent toxicological investigations. In addition, the best storage conditions were determined for liver G6PDH enzyme. In this study, amplification of the rinderpest virus (RPV) fusion (F) gene with polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and cloning of the F gene in Escherichia coli were reported. In this research, the pathogenesis and presence of transplacental pestivirus infection were investigated in different flocks. For this purpose, a total of 661 pregnant ewes and 29 rams were used. 174 of 661 pregnant ewes were sampled twice in the second or the third month of gestation and as well as on the day of gestation, whereas 487 of them were sampled only on the day of delivery. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of free radicals and to show the changes in the antioxidative metabolism of dogs with renal diseases. Genetic determinants of lactose fermentation, proteolytic activity and bacteriocin production in the strains L. lactis subsp. lactis MPL114, L. lactis subsp. cremoris MPC112 and L. lactis subsp. lactis biovar. diacetylactis MPD166 were studied. As a result of mutation and genetic transfer studies, it was determined that all of these characters were encoded by the 65.4 kb plasmid in L. lactis subsp. cremoris MPC112. This study was conducted to evaluate the pharmacologic effects of Polygonum lapathifolium L. (Polygonaceae), growing naturally in Turkey. The antiinflammatory activity of the ethanol extract of the root and rhizome of P. lapathifolium was evaluated using carrageenan-induced paw edema in rats. Intraperitoneal pretreatment with extract at doses ranging from 100 to 500 mg/kg significantly inhibited the acute phase of this experimental model of the inflammatory process in a dose-dependent manner. At maximal dose (500 mg/kg), it exhibited a significantly higher action when compared with those of other doses and was found to be 1.08 times as active as indomethacin. The …

Pharmacokinetics And Tissue Levels Of Tilmicosin In Fowls, Oya Keleş, Tülay Bakirel, Süleyman Şener, Gül Baktir, Gürdal Dağoğlu, Oktay Özkan

Tilmicosin is a long-acting macrolide antibiotic used in the treatment of respiratory disease. It was administered once (50 mg/kg b.wt) to fowls via the oral route for determination of kinetic properties and tissue levels. After oral administration, tilmicosin's pharmacokinetics conformed to a two compartment open model. Tilmicosin was slowly eliminated from the serum and lung with mean half-lives of 30.18 ± 2.38 and 75.74 ± 3.67 hours, respectively. Estimation of DDT by GLC (gas liquid chromatography) in the PCSIR strain of Musca domestica L. Shows that 59.69 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 55.74 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether after treatment with 2.0 ug/fly. In the Holland strain, 18.3 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 17.1 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether. In the Malir strain 4.35 ng/fly DDT was found in the sample extracted with hexane and 1.29 ng/fly in the sample extracted with diethyl ether.

With the aim of identifying cladoceran and copepod fauna of İkizgöl, which is situated 565 m above sea level on the southern slope of Yamanlar Mountain, plankton samples were collected monthly by plankton net horizontally and vertically, with a mesh size of 55µm between December 1994 and May 1996. Collected specimens were preserved in 4% formaldehyde. As a result, a total of 16 (12 cladoceran and 4 copepods) species were identified from İkizgöl.

In this study, some biological characteristics such as age and sex composition, growth in length and weight, age-length, age-weight and length-weight relationships, condition factor spawning time, age of sexual maturity, and fecundity of Silurus triostegus in Atatürk Dam lake were investigated. The percentage of females was 48.3% and that of males 57.7% out of 623 specimens belonging to age groups I-XI. Isometric growth patterns were proved from the length-weight relationships. In this study, the characteristic features, distribution and ecology of the amphipod Niphargus valachicus E. Dobreanu & C. Manolache, 1933 sampled at Sırakaraağaçlar Stream of Sinop, flowing into the Black Sea, are given. Four taxa of Niphargus genus, freshwater Amphipoda fauna have been identified in Turkey. In addition to these, Niphargus valachicus is a new record for the Turkish freshwater fauna.

The present study includes the species Bracon (Glabrobracon ) osculator Nees, B. (G.) lividus Telenga, B. (G.) planinotus Tobias, B. (G.) tschitcherini Kokoujev, B. (G.) helleni Telenga, B. (G.) piger Wesmael, B. (G.) variator Nees from the genus Bracon Fabricius (Hymenoptera, Braconidae: Braconinae). Morphological descriptions and its general distribution and distribution in Turkey are given. Bracon (G.) planinotus Tobias and B. (G.) helleni Telenga were found to be new records for Turkish fauna.

Ecological and faunistic information on 385 Heteropteran specimens, belonging to 38 species of 30 genera of 9 families, collected from Bozcaada, between May and September 1996, is given. Thirty-six of these 38 species are new records for the fauna of Bozcaada.

The Minnesota wolf (Canis lupus) population was estimated by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources at 2,450 during winter 1997-1998 and had increased at an average annual rate of 4.5°% since winter 1988-1989. The population may be removed from the federal endangered species list by 2002, and management would then return to the state. A federal recovery team recommended a population goal of 1,250-1,400 wolves for Minnesota, with none in the agricultural region. A plan approved by the Minnesota legislature, however, continues the protection of wolves, except for pet and livestock depredation control, for at least 5 years …

Biodiversity survey and inventory have resulted in new information on the distribution of Protostrongylidae in Dall’s sheep (Ovis dalli dalli) from the Northwest Territories (Northwest Territories, Canada) and from Alaska (Alaska, USA). In 1998, Parelaphostrongylus odocoilei adults were found for the first time in the skeletal muscles of Dall’s sheep in the Mackenzie Mountains (Northwest Territories). Adult P. odocoilei were associated with petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages and localized myositis; eggs and larvae in the lungs were associated with diffuse granulomatous pneumonia.
