Since the proposal that nitric oxide acts as an intercellular signalling molecule in the nervous system, a large number of studies have been carried out to determine its functions in neural tissue. In this study, neuronal nitric oxide synthase using the highly specific polyclonal nature of an antibody is observed mainly in laminae I-II_i, lamina X and in the intermediolateral cell column of the thoraco-lumbar spinal cord. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of supplemental dietary chromium (Cr) on average daily gain, feed intake, feed efficiency and several serum constituents and tissue chromium contents of pregnant does, newborns and weaned growing rabbits. At the beginning of the study, 36 rabbits were randomly divided into three treatment groups as follows: 0, 200 and 400 ppb. Serological Survey Of The Infection Of Parainfluenzavirus Type 3 In Cattle In Malatya, Aykut Özdarendeli̇, Mehmet Kandi̇l
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
Cattle serum samples were examined for antibodies to parainfluenza type 3 (PI-3) virus using the hemaglutination-inhibition (HI) test. These sera were taken in autumn 1994 and spring 1995 from clinically healthy cattle in Malatya. Antibodies to PI-3 virus were detected in 897 out of 1000 cattle sera 89.7%. Reciprocal antibody titres to PI-3 virus in cattle ranged from 1:16 to 1:1024. It was determined that the proportion of seropositive sera in the cattle in the spring was higher than in the autumn.

In this retrospective study, some epidemiologic aspects and histopathologic characteristics of 236 canine mammary tumours diagnosed at the Pathology Department, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, University of Ankara, from 1973 to 1998 were evaluated. Forty-eight of 236 dogs with tumours (23.08%) were poodle, 40 (19.23%) were caniche, 30 (14.43%) were terrier, 27 (12.98%) were German shepherd, 15 (7.21%) were pinscher, 48 (23.08%) were 13 different breeds and the breeds of 28 (11.86%) were not known. A Study On The Growth Properties And Livability Of Tushin Lambs, Mevlüt Karaoğlu, Muhli̇s Maci̇t, Hakki Emsen
Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences
The birth weight and weaning weight of all the lambs were 4.35 kg, and 16.79 kg respectively. The weight at the beginning and end of the grazing period, and the total and daily weight gain of females on the pasture in were found to be 15.62 kg, 24.51 kg, 6.03 kg and 66.37g respectively. The values of survival rate in different periods were determined to be 95.2 percent until the 30th, 60th and 90th days. Tushin lambs showed as good a performance as Akkaraman and Morkaraman lambs reared in different environmental conditions.

This study was carried out to determine the effects of heat and sodiummetabisulfite treated soybeans in broiler rations on live weight, feed consumption, feed efficiency, and the weights of the liver, pancreas, kidney, spleen and heart and the severity of lesions in these organs. A total of 160 one- day - old Hysex Brown broiler chicks were used in the experiment. There were eight groups each containing 20 chicks. The experiment lasted seven weeks. In order to determine the prophylactic effects on the development of S. fasciolaris, the drugs (albendazole and praziquantel) were given 2 days before the infection and for a period of 30 days. The effects of physical texture of feed and feeding regimes in broiler's gizzards were observed. Firstly, chicks were divided into three groups. In this study, the effects of feeds supplemented with DL-alanine and betaine on the growth and chemical composition of fingerling rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. Fish fed with DL-alanine (1.5% of diet) and betaine (1.5% of diet) supplemented diets had greater weight gains (35.36±1.81g and 38.47±3.02 g respectively) than those fed a control diet (28.32±0.31 g). It was found that the groups fed with attractant supplemented diets had better feed conversion and protein efficiency ratios than the control group. In this study, the chemical components of Clarias gariepinus (Burchell 1822), which is distributed in Aksu Stream in the Antalya region of Turkey, and their suitable utilization methods were investigated. 68% fish flesh yield, 16.58% protein, 75.44% moisture, 5.38% fat and 1.21% crude ash were established. Different processing methods, hot smoking boiling and roasting were applied. As a result of these applications, from the point of view of consumption, the most suitable product was determined to be the hot smoked one. The colour, smell, texture and taste of the product obtained with hot smoking were found to be optimum.

In this research, the phenotypic parameters of fattening characteristics were determined and the of heritabilities of these traits were estimated in the Ile de France (IF) x Akkaraman (AK) (G_1) crossbreed male lambs. It was estimated that the widest genetic variation was daily live weight gain between the beginning of fattening and the 42nd and 56th day. It was concluded that the selection based on the daily live weight gain of the progenies to increase the meat yield in the IF X AK (G_1) sheep can be successful.

In this study, the fertilizing ability of in vitro capacitated bull spermatozoa in two different capacitation media (Hypotaurine and Follicular Fluid) was investigated. Ovaries were obtained from slaughterhouse and were transported to the laboratory in saline (0.9% NaCl) at 30-35ºC. This study was carried out to determine the seroprevalance of Theileria annulata in non-vaccinated cattle in Elazığ, Malatya and Tunceli provinces between May 1997 and March 1998. Serum samples were collected from a total of 741 cattle in Elazığ, Malatya, Tunceli and vicinities. Serum antibodies against T. annulata were investigated by the Indirect Fluorescence Antibody (IFA) test. In addition, peripheral blood smears were prepared and examined under the microscope. The seroprevalance of Theileria annulata in Elazığ, Malatya and Tunceli provinces was 42.8%, 17.1% and 34.8%; piroplasm forms of Theileria annulata in these animals were 7%, 5.5% and 3%, respectively.

In this study, the effect of flushing and oestrus synchronization applications on fertility in Akkaraman sheep was investigated. The research was carried out in 78 Akkaraman sheep at the second lactation. The sheep were randomly allocated into two groups; one being the experimental group and the other the control group. Vaginal sponge containing fluorogestone acetate (FGA) and oestrus synchronization using 600 I.U. PMSG was applied to the experimental group. The main environmental effects in a mixed model are comparison or contemporary group effects or more precisely herd-year-month of calving subclass effects. Four male goats aged 10-12 months showing clinical signs of leptospirosis out of a herd of 90 goats in the province of Elazığ were used in this study. Having performed a systematic clinical examination of the sick animals, blood samples were taken from v. jugularis for heamatological (total leucocytes, erythrocytes, haemoglobin and PCV), biochemical (blood glucose, plasma proteins, albumin, globulin, total, direct and indirect bilirubin, aspartate amino transferase, urea and creatinin) and serological (microscopic agglutination test, MAT) analysis. The rat brachial plexus was studied morphologically and the average numbers of the fascicles were studied by light microscope. For this purpose, we used 30 Wistar albino adult rats (16 males, 14 females; 180-250 g). The rats were anaesthetized by urethane (0.6 ml/100 g body weight injected i.p.). The brachial plexus was prepared for the microdissection technique and was evaluated in terms of its formation. The Heath Mouse (Pseutlomys shortridgei) was formerly widely distributed in Western Australia and Victoria. However, now it is known only to exist in areasof fragmented habitat. Heath Mouse populations have not been investigated in Western Australia, as it was thought to be extinct in the state until its rediscovery in 1987. It is known from only tour locations, and from these, the highest numbers known are probably the 18 captures of this mouse from five years of trapping in Lake Magenta Nature Reserve. Populations of 2 species of arvicoline rodents, the prairie vole (Microtus ochrogaster) and meadow vole (M. pennsylvanicus), were monitored monthly in alfalfa, bluegrass, and tallgrass prairie habitats in east-central Illinois from 1972 through 1997. Alfalfa provides very highquality preferred food and poor vegetative cover for both vole species, whereas bluegrass provides intermediate food and vegetative cover. Preferred food resources were very low, especially for M. ochrogaster, and vegetative cover was very dense in tallgrass prairie. Maximum and mean population densities of M. ochrogaster were highest in alfalfa, intermediate in bluegrass, and lowest in tallgrass prairie. …

To better understand growth and age-pigment (lipofuscin) accumulation rates of the blue crab Callinectes sapidus under natural conditions, juveniles (33 to 94 mm carapace width) were reared in outdoor ponds for over 1 yr. Growth rates, measured by carapace width, during summer and fall exceeded all those reported in the literature; the initial carapace width of 59 ± 14 mm (mean ± SD) increased to 164 ± 15 mm within a 3 mo period. Despite intense efforts to increase vaccine coverage, measles virus (MV) still causes significant morbidity and mortality in the world, sometimes as the result of severe, chronic, lethal disease. In an effort to develop therapies to supplement immunization strategies, a number of 5′-nor carbocyclic adenosine analogues were evaluated for anti-MV activity in CV-1 monkey kidney cells. Of those compounds tested, those either unsubstituted at C4 or possessing a hydroxyl, azido or amino substituent at that position were the most active, with particularly significant inhibition of MV, strain Chicago-1.
