In this study, has been carried out to investigate some growth features of the red mullet ( Mullus barbatusLinnaeus, 1758) which is the important commercially species of the North Aegean Sea. Have been examined: Sex distrubution, growth in lenght and weight,condition factor, diet regimes and spawning period. The percentage of females was 68.78 % and males 31.22 % out of 474 specimens which ranged between age group I - IV. The lenght and weight differences between females and males were not statistictically significant. Pathological Findings In The First Case Of Caprine Paratuberculosis (Johne's Disease) In Elazığ, Erkan Karadaş, Nursal Meti̇n, İhsan Yaman

Caprine paratuberculosis (Johne's disease) was diagnosed according to pathomorphological findings in a 5-year-old indigenous female hairy goat in ElazİÛ. Diagnosis was confirmed by demonstration of Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (M.a. paratuberculosis) in the intestinal smears and tissue sections stained with the Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) method, and also detection of specific M.a. paratuberculosis DNA by the Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR).

This study was carried out in order to examine the effects of ProstaglandinF2a on uterine muscles in laying hens. 12 young, 18 adult and 10 old laying hens, in three groups (total 40) were used. Six different doses of PGF2a were injected into uterine tissue samples obtained from three groups using an isolated-organ bath. The response of the uterine muscles to PGF2a was recorded. For each dose the result was assessed as latent and amplitude values within each group and among the groups. This research was carried out to determine the amount of concentrate and hay consumed during the milk feeding period and the weaning age of Brown Swiss and Holstein calves. Twenty-five Brown Swiss and twenty Holstein Friesian calves were used. Calves reached 500 g and 1000 g/daily calf starter feed consumption at 36.5 ± 1.8 and 53.8 ± 1.2 days-old respectively. Also, gains in live weight and daily feed consumption depending upon age were studied functionally. The morphological and structural development of the syrinx was studied with a light microscope in 100 female and male Japanese quails from 1 to 60 days old and adults. The quails had a tracheobronchial syrinx since it was based on both tracheal and bronchial elements. Two tracheal syringeal cartilages were attached at both ends to the pessulus in the tympanum. In this species the tympanum had a slightly increased diameter. The pessulus was a wedge-shaped cartilage, its blade lying dorsoventrally so that it divided the airway vertically. Blood group alleles and their frequencies were estimated within a Denizli fowl flock. Sixteen full sib family groups we- re formed to facilitate the identification of segregating alleles. In this research, the effects of early weaning on the growth rate and milk production characteristics of Brown Swiss cattle in later years were investigated. The calves used in the study were weaned at 5, 7 and 9 weeks of age, and the weights obtained at 6, 9, 12, 15 and 18 months of age were not significantly affected by the age of weaning. The aim of this study was to estimate the cost of mastitis and the contribution of each cost component of mastitis to the total mastitis induced cost in herds with low and high levels of subclinical mastitis under Scottish field conditions. It was estimated that mastitis cost £140 per cow/year to the average Scottish dairy farmer in 1996. However, this figure was as low as £69 per cow/year in herds with lower levels of subclinical mastitis, and as high as £228 cow/year in herds with high sub- clinical mastitis. The effects of some commonly consumed oils on plasma lipids, lipid peroxidation and thromboxane A_ 2 (TxA _2 ) production in chicks were studied. Protein bands of hydatid fluids of sheep liver were determined by SDS-PAGE and Western blotting, and this was followed by the determination of specific bands of hydatid cysts for sheep and humans. For diagnostic purposes, 30 positive and 20 negative sheep sera, 1 commercially obtained non-infected sheep serum, and 10 posi- tive and 10 negative human sera were used in this experiment. In this study, the monthly variation in the blood glucose level of Capoeta capoeta capoeta caught from Aras between August 1995 and June 1996 was determined. The average blood glucose level was determined to be 112.04±5.19 mg/dl in males and 106.32±9.68 mg/dl in females and 110.06±4.19 mg/dl in the population. The blood glucose level was highest (141.07±13.67 mg/dl) in April, and lowest (69.14±9.75 mg/dl) in September. It was deter- mined that the level of blood glucose was related to temperature and reproduction.

The results are given of a study on Acaroid mites collected in the summer (July-August) from the nests of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) in the subalpine zone in Shahbuz, Lachin, Keebajar and Kedabek regions of Azerbaijan. Lessepsian Fishes Spreading Along The Coasts Of The Mediterranean And The Southern Aegean Sea Of Turkey, Hati̇ce Torcu, Savaş Mater

The taxonomy and biological characters of 22 Lessepsian fishes living on the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea were examined and 8 species were determined to have commercial importance. Of these, Upeneus moluccensis and Saurida undosquamis have become economic fishes of the Eastern Mediterranean trawl fisheries, having significant stocks. The species previously misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus was determined to be Upeneus pori. It has been pointed out that new species can be added to the recorded ones by the consequent influx of Red Sea biota into the Levant.

In order to determine the reproduction characteristics of Liza ramada, a fish of economical importance, the GSI, egg diameter, sex maturity, age and sex ratio were examined in 228 specimens caught periodically, between February 1992 and July 1994 in Akgöl-Paradeniz Lagoon. According to the GSI % and egg diameter, the reproduction period of Liza ramada was determinedto be November and December. This study was carried out to identify some aspects of the reproductive cycle of the rabbitfish ( Siganus rivulatus) inhabiting the northeastern Mediterranean. For this reason, monthly sampling was conducted between February 1995 and June 1996, and a total of 473 specimens were used. By using the monthly changes in the values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Condition Factor (K), it was found that their reproduction takes place during July and August. Toxicity of neem extract in comparison with DDVP (Dichlorvos) was determined against the housefly ( Musca domestica L). Neem leaf extract was applied at 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 microgram/fly and DDVP was treated in 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 microgram/fly doses. Lethal dose values were calculated with probit analysis and LD 50 and LD 90 values were found to be 8.4 and 169.8 ug/fly of neem extract respectively, whereas, values of 0.44 and 3.58 ug/fly of DDVP were found for LD 50 and LD 90 against house flies.

In this study, globulin and albumin proteins of Apodemus mystacinus and Apodemus agrarius were examined using the SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) technique. In A. mystacinus, there were 7-8 bands in the globulin region and 2-3 bands in the prealbumin zone. It was determined that there were variations in both the globulin region and prealbumin zone in populations of A. mystacinus. In specimens of A. agrarius, nine bands appeared in the globulin region, and two bands were observed in the prealbumin zone. In this study, growth in the carp population was investigated using samples caught with longline nets of different mesh sizes. Mortality rate and stock analysis were calculated by length frequency data taken from commercial fisheries. The age composition of the samples was from I to VI. A Review Of Ecological Features Of Fishes Inhabiting Chatkal Biosphere Reserve In Uzbekistan, Ulughbek T. Mirzaev

This paper provides brief data on the distribution, morphology, biology and way of life of the fishes inhabiting rivers located in Chatkal Biosphere Reserve. The rivers of this reserve are inhabited by cold-loving fishes adapted to mountain conditions. These fishes are characterized by low fecundity, bigger size of eggs and a slower growth. Most of these fishes are small inhabitants of stony-pebble parts of the rivers and are capable of pressing themselves to the bottom and hiding themselves behind stones.

Laboratory Evaluation Of Bromethalin Against Lesser Bandicoot Rat, Bandicota Bengalensis, Abdul Azi̇z Khan, Syed Waqar Ali̇ Ri̇zvi̇

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Results of no-choice and choice feeding tests against Bandicota bengalensis showed that bromethalin is highly toxic and efficacious rodenticide. However, its susceptibility differed between sexes. In no-choice test minimum time of cent-percent mortality was 1.2 days (range 1-2). The amount of toxicant consumed per rat resulting in complete mortality was 4.92±0.78 and 5.09±0.22 mg/kg in female and male rats respectively. In choice tests, mean days to death was 2.1 (range 1-4 days) and the amount of toxicant consumed per rat averaged 5.56±0.30 mg/kg. The latency period exceeded 210 minutes of the poisoning.

In this study, taking the extensor muscle out of the pectoral fin of trout, lipid and mitochondria contents of muscle fibres were examined. Succinic dehydrogenase and Sudan black B stain methods were applied on the sections removed by freezing microtomy. Haematoxylen and eosin staining were also applied on the sections obtained from paraffin blocks. It was observed histologically that nuclei of muscle fibre were located just under the sarcolemma. A faunal and taxonomic study on the family Buprestidae (Coleoptera) was carried provinces of Artvin (Central, Ardanuç, Borçka, Hopa, Şavşat and Yusufeli), Erzincan (Central, Tercan and Üzümlü), Erzurum (Central, Aşkale, Çat, Horasan, Ilıca, İspir, Narman, Oltu, Olur, Pasinler, Pazaryolu, Şenkaya, Tortum and Uzundere) and Kars (Digor and Sarıkamış) in 1993-1997. A total of 38 species were recorded belonging to 6 subfamilies, namely Sphenopterinae (7 species), Chalcophorinae (8), Chrysobothrinae (3), Agrilinae (17), Cylindromorphinae (2) and Trachyinae (1).
