After 125 years of presumed extinction, Gilbert's Potoroo (Potorous gilbertii) was rediscovered in 1994 in Two Peoples Bay Nature Reserve, Albany. As only one population is known to exist, conservation is of prime importance. Faecal analysis was used to examine the diet of P. gilbertii. The species was found to be predominantly mycophagous (fungus-feeding) with invertebrate and plant matter fanning only a small part of its diet. Fungal material made up more than 90% of faecal matter throughout the year. A total of 44 fungal spore types were discerned. Of these, five were tentatively identified to species level with the …

1. Adult tiger beetles of the genus Cicindela often co-occur within a habitat but larvae do not. Larvae are sedentary and form usually permanent burrows at the site of oviposition where they require 1-3 years for development.

2. To test niche partitioning based on ovipositional preference, the behavior of two sympatric salt marsh tiger beetles, Cicindela circumpicta and C. togata (Coleoptera: Cicindelidae), were examined.

The results are given of a study on Acaroid mites collected in the summer (July-August) from the nests of the common vole (Microtus arvalis) in the subalpine zone in Shahbuz, Lachin, Keebajar and Kedabek regions of Azerbaijan. Under the specific conditions of the high mountain subalpine meadows of Azerbaijan, the fauna of acaroid mites in the nests of rodents is sufficiently diverse. This study is a taxonomical revision of 257 specimens of Miniopterus schreibersi (Kuhl, 1819) collected from Turkey between 1974 and 1994. A total of 30 external and cranial measurements and weights and the ages of the specimens were determined. Diagnostic characters, habitat, and measurements of subspecies were recorded. The specimens collected in Turkey were evaluated by comparison with the nominate form distributed nearby, Miniopterus schreibersi pallidus Thomas, 1907, and synonyms. It was determined that both the nominate form and Miniopterus schreibersi pallidus exist in Turkey.

In this survey, 17 adult (3 , 14 ) Rana ridibunda specimens were investigated morphologically. The morphological characteristics of the Işıklı Lake specimens are in accordance with those given for R. r. caralitana (1). Furthermore, the distribution range of R. r. caralitana has now been extended.

Lessepsian Fishes Spreading Along The Coasts Of The Mediterranean And The Southern Aegean Sea Of Turkey, Hati̇ce Torcu, Savaş Mater

The taxonomy and biological characters of 22 Lessepsian fishes living on the coasts of the Eastern Mediterranean and Aegean Sea were examined and 8 species were determined to have commercial importance. Of these, Upeneus moluccensis and Saurida undosquamis have become economic fishes of the Eastern Mediterranean trawl fisheries, having significant stocks. The species previously misidentified as Upeneus asymmetricus was determined to be Upeneus pori. It has been pointed out that new species can be added to the recorded ones by the consequent influx of Red Sea biota into the Levant.

In order to determine the reproduction characteristics of Liza ramada, a fish of economical importance, the GSI, egg diameter, sex maturity, age and sex ratio were examined in 228 specimens caught periodically, between February 1992 and July 1994 in Akgöl-Paradeniz Lagoon. According to the GSI % and egg diameter, the reproduction period of Liza ramada was determinedto be November and December. The lowest GSI % obtained for Liza ramada was 4.99 % in February and the highest values were16.67 % in November and 11.67 % in December. The mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) control region sequences of two species ( Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas) of sea turtles from the Mediterranean were analysed using samples from Northern Cyprus. Only one single haplotype for each species was detected. These results were compared with other published work regarding the genetic structure of sea turtle populations. These results suggest that the Mediterranean population of sea turtles were separated from their Atlantic relatives in the recent past. In this study the development of the digestive tract of newly hatched rainbow trout ( Oncorhynchus mykiss) larvae were examined. The digestive tract was attached to the anus a few hours after hatching. On the second day their mouths were open and the differentiation in the esophagus started. Mucosal folds contained a large quantity of cubic epithelium and goblet cells. Goblet cells were stained positively with Alcian blue and also stained negatively with P.A.S. Toxicity of neem extract in comparison with DDVP (Dichlorvos) was determined against the housefly ( Musca domestica L). Neem leaf extract was applied at 5, 10, 20, 40 and 80 microgram/fly and DDVP was treated in 0.1, 0.2, 0.4, 0.8 and 1.6 microgram/fly doses. Lethal dose values were calculated with probit analysis and LD 50 and LD 90 values were found to be 8.4 and 169.8 ug/fly of neem extract respectively, whereas, values of 0.44 and 3.58 ug/fly of DDVP were found for LD 50 and LD 90 against house flies.

The frogs used in this study were divided into three groups. The first group consisted of frogs collected from their natural habitat, and these animals were dissected immediately. The bodies of the frogs in the second group were totally submerged in water at +4 °C, and the third group of frogs was kept in a dry environment. Community Structure Of Zooplanktonic Organisms In Lake Akşehir, Nuray Emi̇r Akbulut

In this study, the abundance and seasonal distribution of rotifer and crustacean zooplankton were examined. A negative correlation beetween rotifers and crustaceans in terms of their abundancy rates was observed. Copepods were most abundant and comprised 43.3 %; rotifers comprised 34 % and cladocerans comprised 22.6% of the total zooplanktonic organisms. Copepods were abundant in autumn whereas rotifers were abundant in spring and autumn but cladocerans were abundant in summer periods. Some zooplanktonic organisms recorded in all samples throughout the study period were Filinia, Hexarthra, Brachionus, Asplanchna, Keratella, Arctodiaptomus spinosus and Diaphanosoma lacustris.

In this study, growth in the carp population was investigated using samples caught with longline nets of different mesh sizes. Mortality rate and stock analysis were calculated by length frequency data taken from commercial fisheries. The age composition of the samples was from I to VI. The fork lengths were between 10.5 and 49.4 cm, the total weights were found to be between 20.19 and 1922.20 g. and condition factors ranged from 1.298 to 2.388. The total mortality rate (Z) was found to be 1.36±0.10, the natural mortality rate (M) was 0.35 and the fishing mortality rate (F) was 1.01. …

In this study, the water chemistry and zooplankton community of Lake Mogan studied between March 1997 and April 1998. Small-scale industries, crop-farming, urban settlement of the municipality of Gölbaşı with the untreated raw sewage effluent and recreational activities are examples of the human impact within the catchment and the lake, leading to high loading of DIN and TP into the lake via the inflows. This paper provides brief data on the distribution, morphology, biology and way of life of the fishes inhabiting rivers located in Chatkal Biosphere Reserve. The rivers of this reserve are inhabited by cold-loving fishes adapted to mountain conditions. These fishes are characterized by low fecundity, bigger size of eggs and a slower growth. Most of these fishes are small inhabitants of stony-pebble parts of the rivers and are capable of pressing themselves to the bottom and hiding themselves behind stones.

Laboratory Evaluation Of Bromethalin Against Lesser Bandicoot Rat, Bandicota Bengalensis, Abdul Azi̇z Khan, Syed Waqar Ali̇ Ri̇zvi̇

Results of no-choice and choice feeding tests against Bandicota bengalensis showed that bromethalin is highly toxic and efficacious rodenticide. However, its susceptibility differed between sexes. In no-choice test minimum time of cent-percent mortality was 1.2 days (range 1-2). The amount of toxicant consumed per rat resulting in complete mortality was 4.92±0.78 and 5.09±0.22 mg/kg in female and male rats respectively. In choice tests, mean days to death was 2.1 (range 1-4 days) and the amount of toxicant consumed per rat averaged 5.56±0.30 mg/kg. The latency period exceeded 210 minutes of the poisoning.

This study was carried out to determine the optimal water temperature and to investigate the effects of additional substrate on growth and survival during the nursery culturing of Penaeus semisulcatus in two separate experiments. At the end of six weeks, survivals of postlarvae (PLs) at 22, 24, 26, 30 and 34¡C were 52, 46, 70, 30 and 40%, respectively. The highest (2.76 mm/week) and lowest growth rates in terms of total length (0.43-0.49 mm/week) were displayed by the PLs grown at 34¡C and 22-24¡C, respectively. This study showed the effect of temperature on copper, zinc and lead toxicity to the freshwater amphipod Gammarus pulex pulex. 96-h LC 50 values were estimated for copper, zinc and lead in this species using the static bioassay method. Increase in the concentration of copper, zinc and lead decreased the survival of the animals. The LC 50 values of Cu, Zn and Pb for Gammarus pulex pulexranged from 0.028 to 0.080, 5.2 to 12.1 and 11.2 to 23.2 mg/l, respectively. The diel changes in the vertical distribution of zooplankton in the southeast Black Sea were described in this study. The zooplankton were sampled using two different sampling methods throughout one day in October 1996 and July 1997 at the same station. The zooplankton counts, the length measurements and biomass estimates showed that the zooplankton in the southeast Black Sea is dominated by small organisms, among which Noctiluca scintillans is the dominant species. This is the first work examining the utility of scale chemistry for determining natal origins and habitat associations. I quantified a relationship of scale chemistry to water chemistry, quantified geographic variation in scale chemistry, and evaluated stability of scale chemistry through maturation. Scale chemistry accurately reflected trace element composition of the water in which fish had lived. Juvenile spot (Leiostomus xanthurus) were held in four concentrations of Sr, Cd, and Ba maintained at either 20°C or 25°C, for 42 days. Strontium:Ca, Cd:Ca, and Ba:Ca levels in scales were linearly related to environmental concentrations while temperature had no effect. …

During July-September 1993 and May 1996, a survey of the metazoan parasites of 817 elasmobranchs from the Gulf of California, representing 42 species, was conducted at 14 sites along the western portion of the Gulf of California. Elasmobranchs were obtained from local commercial fishers. In this paper, we report all digeneans collected during the survey, excluding the gorgoderids, which will be presented in a subsequent paper. Elaeophorosis, caused by Elaeophora elaphi, was observed in red deer (Cervus elaphus) from Toledo Province (Spain) for the first time. Adult specimens of Elaeophora elaphi were found in the hepatic vessels of nine of 151 red deer between October 1994 and September 1995; intensity of infection was two to 18 nematodes per host. Adult nematodes were only found during the period from fall through early spring. No differences were present between sex or age groups. Larval ontogeny of Stolephorus baganem:;is and Thryssa kammalensis, comprises three successive phases characterized by: (I) development of swimming appendages, (2) changes in allometric growth of various body parts, and (3) increase in body depth, as well as eye diameter, in the case of S. baganensis. Both anchovy species are multiple spawners, spawning all year round but varying in intensity. Chickens and turkeys are routinely infected with the roundworms Ascaridia galli and A. dissimilis, respectively. The current study was conducted to gather basic information on these worms and to determine whether heterologous infections (chicken worms in turkeys and turkey worms in chickens) would be successful. Chickens and turkeys were obtained at day of hatch, brooded to 7 days of age, and placed in pens (25/pen) according to infection as received at 7 days of age: homologous, heterologous and control (no infection).
