Susceptibility Of The Legume Flower Thrips To Metarhizium Anisopliae On Different Varieties Of Cowpea, S. Ekesi, N. K. Maniania, W. Lwande

The susceptibility of Megalurothrips sjostedti to Metarhizium anisopliae when reared on susceptible, tolerant, and moderately resistant varieties of cowpea at different constant temperatures was evaluated in the laboratory. Insects were exposed either to direct spray of the conidia or to fungus-treated floral tissues. Mortality was significantly higher on the moderately resistant variety at all temperatures compared to the susceptible and tolerant varieties. Correspondingly, lethal time and lethal concentration values were significantly shorter and lower, respectively, on the moderately resistant variety compared to the other varieties, thus indicating that the two control methods are compatible as part of an integrated pest …

Elaeophorosis, caused by Elaeophora elaphi, was observed in red deer (Cervus elaphus) from Toledo Province (Spain) for the first time. Adult specimens of Elaeophora elaphi were found in the hepatic vessels of nine of 151 red deer between October 1994 and September 1995; intensity of infection was two to 18 nematodes per host. Adult nematodes were only found during the period from fall through early spring. No differences were present between sex or age groups. Population trends are documented from 1941 to 1997 for the 12 species of furbearing mammals harvested in Nebraska. Populations of red fox (Vulpes vulpes, raccoon (Procyon lotor), beaver (Castor canadensis), coyote (Canis lupus), and bobcat (Lynx rufus) have increased during this period. During July-September 1993 and May 1996, a survey of the metazoan parasites of 817 elasmobranchs from the Gulf of California, representing 42 species, was conducted at 14 sites along the western portion of the Gulf of California. Elasmobranchs were obtained from local commercial fishers. In this paper, we report all digeneans collected during the survey, excluding the gorgoderids, which will be presented in a subsequent paper. The spatial distributions of Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) and Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1798) were examined based on four seasonal trawl surverys carried out between 1991-1992 covering 20-500 meters of the Turkish and international waters in the Aegean Sea. It was found that E. cirrhosa inhabits all depth ranges examined in the northern part, but it was seldom observed in the south. E. moschata, on the other hand, has a basin-wide distribution and solely inhabits the upper 200-meter depth range.

This Action Plan covers the pheasants, a group of one African species and 50 Asian ground-dwelling birds, found within Asia from the Caucasus in the west, through the Indian Subcontinent and the Himalayas to eastern China and Japan. They also occur through Southeast Asia to Flores, east of Java. They are largely dependent on forested habitats, making them highly vulnerable to deforestation and habitat degradation. As large, ground-dwelling birds they are also widely hunted for food, plumage, and the live bird trade. Consequently, many species are threatened. The possible influence of factors such as depth of insemination, cervico-vaginal mucus production and reflux of semen in the vagina after insemination in German merinolandrace were considered. Fresh diluted semen was inseminated intracervically. The results obtained for non-return-rate, lambing rate and fecundity are 49.01%, 39.75% and 64.55% respectively. The year had a significant effect (p ² 0.05) on non-return-rate and lambing rate but not on fecundity.The other parameters considered did not affect prolificacy significantly.

The effects of isofluran on cardiac performance in dogs with experimental acute hemorrhagic anemia (AHA) were inves-tigated. A local anesthetic agent was administered to dogs in the control group (=2) and isofluran to dogs in the experimental group (n=6). Left ventricle systolic and diastolic blood pressure with filling and ejection time before and 15 min after AHA were deter-mined in all dogs. Pharmacokinetics of oxytetracycline were investigated in 20 sheep following intravenous injection of 40, 80 and 160 mg/kg doses. An increase in concentration of oxytetracycline was found with increasing dose at all the sampling times in each animal. The peak plasma concentration of oxytetracycline attained after intravenous administration of 40, 80 and 160 mg/kg of the drug was 18.67±0.09, 40.63±0.16 and 86.51±0.10 mg/ml, respectively. These plasma concentrations decreased with plasma half lives of 10.88 ± 0.29, 5.87 ± 0.08 and 7.35 ± 0.08 hours respectively. The immunogenicity of Pasteurella haemolyticaserotypes was investigated in an experimental animal model. Rabbits were immunized with bacterins and leukotoxins of selected serotypes of P. haemolytica,and the IgG level and antileukotoxin activities of immune sera were measured. The highest IgG levels against A1, A2, A7 and T4 antigens were detected in rabbits receiving polyvalent combined (bacterin plus leukotoxin) immunogens. Monovalent combined immunogens induced high antibody titers against homologous serotypes, but low titers against heterologous serotypes. The objective of this study was to determine blood plasma and hair copper levels in clinicially healthy Swiss Brown and Holstein cows. This study was performed on 50 cows, 3-6 years old. Blood and hair samples were collected in December, March, June and September. Mean plasma copper levels in December, March, June and September were 68.23±2.62, 44.58±1.78, 52.79±2.15 and 52.76±2.59 mg/dl respectively. Also mean hair copper levels were 5.78±0.22, 5.45±0.15, 5.25±0.11 and 5.77±0.15 ppm respectively. 132 intestine specimens belonging to small ruminants with suspected enterotoxaemia were sent to the Elazig Veterinary Control and Research Institute from Elazığ and the surrounding provinces in 1994-1998. In bacteriological examinations, it was found that 51 of the 132 specimens were positive and 81 negative. The toxin-neutralisation test was applied for diagnosis. The 51 enterotoxaemia cases were identified as 28 C.welchii Type D, 16 C.welchii Type C, 7 C.welchii Type A.

A feeding trial was conducted to assess the effects of supplementing the diets of commercial-size rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) with red pepper as a natural carotenoid source and synthetic astaxanthin. Diets without carotenoid supplemented (control) and containing 3% or 6% red pepper and 0.05% "Carophyll Pink 8%" were given to groups 1-4, respectively. Rainbow trout, with weight of groups between 470 and 483 g, were fed four different diets for 45 days. In this study, a total of 100 ground beef samples purchased at different butchers' shops and supermarkets in Ankara including 50 samples obtained from butchers' shops and 50 samples obtained from supermarkets, were analysed for the presence of motile Aeromonas species. According to the analysis, motile Aeromonas spp. were found in 73 % (73/100) of ground beef samples. Aeromonas spp. were isolated from 33 samples (66 %) obtained from butchers' shops, and 40 samples (80 %) obtained from supermarkets. In this study, a total of 365 cattle (234 male, 131 female) slaughtered in different localities in Thrace (The European part of Turkey) were examined for hypodermosis between January and May of 1997. Hypoderma bovis, H. lineatum and unidentified 2nd instar larvae were found in the skin and subcutaneous tissue of the back region of the animals. The prevalence rate and intensity of infestation were 3.56% and 10.23 respectively.
