I studied the singing behavior of the closely related Black-capped (Poecile atricapillus) and Carolina (Poecile carolinensis) Chickadees along their range interface in central Illinois. These sibling species are parapatrically distributed from the Appalachians through the Midwest to Kansas. Where their ranges do overlap, small hybrid zones form and chickadees in these areas frequently sing aberrant songs. The majority of the songs studied were recorded 17 April-16 July 1999 in fifteen counties throughout central Illinois. Leafy spurge (Euphorbia esula) is an exotic invasive weed in the northern Great Plains. We examined the effects of leafy spurge infestation on densities and nest success of breeding birds in grasslands on the Sheyenne National Grassland (SNG), ND. We categorized spurge-infested grasslands into three levels of infestation, based on the area covered by spurge patches: (a) low (0-20%), (b) medium (20-60%) and, (c) high (> 60%). We surveyed 60 100-m radius circular plots (20 in each category), and searched for nests in three 16-ha plots (one in each category). In this study, taking the extensor muscle out of the pectoral fin of trout, lipid and mitochondria contents of muscle fibres were examined. Succinic dehydrogenase and Sudan black B stain methods were applied on the sections removed by freezing microtomy. Haematoxylen and eosin staining were also applied on the sections obtained from paraffin blocks. It was observed histologically that nuclei of muscle fibre were located just under the sarcolemma. Koinobiont and solitary, early instar larval endoparasitoid, Apanteles galleriae Wilkinson were reared on two lepidopterous host species, the greater wax moth, Galleriae mellonella (L.) and the small wax moth, Achoria grisella Fabr. under a photoperiod of 12:12 h (D: L) at 25°C and 60 % relative humidity. The parasitoid with three larval instars completed its immature developmental period within 26-28 days when it was reared on G. mellonella and within 25-27 days on A. grisella. In this study, the hibernation of ground squirrels ( Spermophilus xanthoprymnus) distributed in Central Anatolia were studied in laboratory and field conditions. According to our findings, the hibernation period of ground squirrels began at the end of August and terminated in mid February. The longest and shortest hibernation bouts of ground squirrels were found to be 100 and 21 days, respectively. In this period, the longest ununterrupted hibernation was 13 days. Ground squirrels gained weight during the early months of summer and then lost weight constantly throughout hibernation period. No marked periodic cycles were observed in the periods of weight …

Some Reproduction Characteristics Of Capoeta Tinca (Heckel, 1843) Living In The Oltu Stream Of Çoruh Basin, Ayhan Yildirim, M. Sitki Aras

913 specimens of Capoeta tinca (Heckel, 1843) were analysed in Oltu Stream-Çoruh Basin from August, 1994 to July, 1996. It was determined that the age distribution in the population varied between I and XII, but age group III was dominant in number. The sexual maturity of specimens in the population were complete at the age of II in males and III in females, and they spawned between May and July when water temperature was 16°C. Fecundity was on average 5561±833 eggs/female and was related to fork length, total weight, age and gonad weight.

The muscle fibers in the origin regions of the triceps muscle of Passer domesticuswere characterized histochemically on the basis of their myofibrillar adenosine triphosphatase (mATPase) activity after acidic and alkaline preincubations. Muscle fibers were identified as type II (alkaline-stable/acid-labile mATPase activity) and type III (alkaline-stable/acid-stable mATPase activity). The number of type II fibers was higher in the muscle studied (83%) and this was found to be significant.

The spatial distributions of Eledone cirrhosa (Lamarck, 1798) and Eledone moschata (Lamarck, 1798) were examined based on four seasonal trawl surverys carried out between 1991-1992 covering 20-500 meters of the Turkish and international waters in the Aegean Sea. It was found that E. cirrhosa inhabits all depth ranges examined in the northern part, but it was seldom observed in the south. E. moschata, on the other hand, has a basin-wide distribution and solely inhabits the upper 200-meter depth range.

This study was carried out to identify some aspects of the reproductive cycle of the rabbitfish ( Siganus rivulatus) inhabiting the northeastern Mediterranean. For this reason, monthly sampling was conducted between February 1995 and June 1996, and a total of 473 specimens were used. By using the monthly changes in the values of the gonadosomatic index (GSI) and Condition Factor (K), it was found that their reproduction takes place during July and August. In this study, which was carried out in July 1998, erythrocyte sizes of Lacerta rudis were examined. The L. rudis specimens were collected from Zigana Pass (Trabzon) at an altitude of 1820 m. Blood smears were prepared at Zigana Pass. Mature erythrocytes (entire cell) and their nuclei lengths and widths were measured by means of an ocular micrometer at a total magnification of 1600x.

The present study was carried out to examine the relationship between helminth infections, nutrient reserves and gonadal status in powan in relation to infection with Diphyllobothrium spp. The relationship between fish size and body composition was also investigated. The condition factor increased with increasing length for uninfected fish and decreased for infected fish. This demonstrates the negative effect of infection on the growth of the fish. In this study, globulin and albumin proteins of Apodemus mystacinus and Apodemus agrarius were examined using the SDS-PAGE (sodium dodecyl sulphate-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis) technique. In A. mystacinus, there were 7-8 bands in the globulin region and 2-3 bands in the prealbumin zone. It was determined that there were variations in both the globulin region and prealbumin zone in populations of A. mystacinus. In specimens of A. agrarius, nine bands appeared in the globulin region, and two bands were observed in the prealbumin zone. A total of 47 different localities including lakes, ponds, streams, rivers and other bodies of water were surveyed between 1996 and 1998 in order to determine the Cladocerean (Crustacea) fauna of the Turkish Thrace region. Thirty-nine species of Cladocera were collected, out of which, 10 are new of the Thrace region of Turkey. The distribution of the species are given according to their localities and province.

In this study, we describe 13 Lacerta sicula hieroglyphica collected from the centre of Bursa and ‚Çakırca, a village about 10 km west of Iznik. The specimens, including their habitat characteristics and distribution, are described. This subspecies is known to live on islands in the Marmara Sea and in Istanbul. This is the first report of L. s. hieroglyphica from Bursa and ‚Çakırca village and therefore its distributional range is being extended to the south of the Marmara Sea.

In this study, Herpetofauna of the eastern region of t he Amanos mountains in Turkey was investigated. A total of 319 samples were collected and 27 species from 17 amphibian and reptile families were described. Two of these species are urodeles, three are anurans, two are turtles, eleven are lizards and eight are snakes.

There were no difficulties in obtaining larvae. The results of this investigation indicate that flat oyster ( Ostrea edulis L.) culture is possible in Black Sea conditions.

The ultrastructure of the cortex of Ophryoscolex purkynjei,an entodiniomorphid ciliate obtained from domesticated cattle rumens, was studied and found to have five layers. A particulate and/or filamentous glycocalyx layer, triple membrane layer, homogeneous epiplasmic layer with very fine grains, microtubular layer characterized with a double row of microtubule bundles each containing at most 6 units, and a compact microfilamentous layer were identified. In addition, scarce and disorganized kinetosomes and related microtubules were found to lie underneath all of these. These observations are discussed with reference to the findings of previous studies of other entodiniomorphid ciliates.

The ultrastructural features of the intrinsic lingual muscles in the frog were investigated. The pieces obtained from the anterior part of the tongue were fixed in 3% gluteraldehyde and postfixed in 0.1% osmium tetroxide. Ultrathin sections stained with uranyl acetate and lead citrate were examined in a JEOL-100SX electron microscope. The muscle fibers were irregular in shape. The sarcoplasm was occupied largely by the myofibrils. In the same muscle fiber, longitudinal, transverse and oblique sections of the myofibrils were observed. This paper provides results of an analysis of phospholipids (PL) and their fatty acid (FA) content in the blood of sheep infected by the nematode Dictyocaulus filaria. Significantly high level of arachidonic acid in the lysophospholipids, and low levels of docozangexenic acid in the phospholipids were obtained, which indicate structural and functional disorders of cellular membranes in blood during dictyocaulosis. These disorders are regarded as metabolic criteria for an assessment of the relation between parasite and host.

The efficacy of neem product (phytopesticide FWB) was compared with perfekthion against sucking pests of cotton (jassids, thrips and whiteflies). Perfekthion proved to be more toxic but its effect lasted for 4 days only while neem product (FWB) was less toxic but its effect lasted for 6 days. Moreover, neem product is much safer and non-polluting.
