In this study, S.enteritidis PT1, 4 and 7 strains isolated from chickens were used. Suspensions containing 10^9 bacteria were inoculated orally to 45 quails. Pathological lesions were examined and bacterial isolation were performed during about 30 days. In 3^{rd} days of experiment, one quail died in PT1 group. In macroscopic examinations, hyperemia and change of colour in liver and slight enlargement in spleen were observed. In microscopic examinations, degeneration, necrose and typhoid nodes were seen in liver. There were reticular cell hyperplasia in spleen and epithelial degeneration , lenfoid hyperplasia in intestines. Bacteria was able to isolated from intestines, liver …

This study based on the effect of nisin on Listeria monocytogenes in white pickled cheese made from pasterurized milk during the ripening and storage period for 60 days. For this purpose, four groups of cheese were produced. All groups were inoculated with the L. monocytogenes 1/2a test strain at the levels of 10^4-10^5 cfu/ml. Competition Between Strains With Autosomal And Standardsex-Determining Mechanisms In The Housefly (Muscidae), Şükran Çakir, Aykut Kence

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Experimental cages started with a mixture of flies at three different ratios (1:9, 5:5, 9:1) from populations having heterosomal and autosomal sex-determining mechanisms were cytogenetically examined over six generations at two different temperatures (25 °C and 35 °C). In general, there was an increase in the frequency of XX males in all competitive population cages. Abnormal testes and intersex appearance, frequent X chromosome aneuploidies and deviation from a 1:1 sex ratio were observed.

The seasonal variation in natural levels of infection with procercoids of pseudophyllidean cestodes, Diphyllobothrium spp, and the abundance of Cyclops strenuus abyssorum (Copepoda) were studied in Loch Lomond, Scotland, From March 1993, to February 1994. The prevalence of infected copepods was found to increase with the temperature of the water, a peak occurring in June, while relatively low levels were recorded between December and March. The population density of C. strenuus abyssorum also exhibited seasonal variation, being higher during the warmer months. Water temperature in Loch Lomond, near Rowardennan, ranged from 3.2 to 16°C. Anadara corneais going to be one of the target species of the dredging fishery along the continental shelf of the Turkish Black Sea coast. Although it has not been exploited yet, studies on the distribution, growth and meat quality have been carried out. In this study, growth parameters were estimated after determining the cohorts by the "Bhattacharya" method. In this study, five specimens of Mustela nivalis collected from five localities in Turkey were examined based on karyological, morphological, bacular and some ecological aspects. The karyotype of M. nivalis has 2n=42, NFa=72 and FN=76. The baculum seems to be similar to that of specimens of M. nivalis dinniki from Erivan (Armenia).

After a review of the literature on the Tabanidae fauna of Turkey, it was found that 156 species and 12 subspecies have been reported. Twelve of the species are from the subfamily Pangoninae, 19 species and 2 subspecies are from the subfamiy Chrysopsinae and 125 species and 10 subspecies are from the subfamily Tabaninae.

In this study, effects of two hericides on pupa formation period, pupa period and number of adults in F_1, F_2 and F_3 generations of Drosophila melnogaster were investigated. 300 ppm concentraiton of 2-4-D applied on parent stock and F_1 generation has lengtened the pupa formation period and pupa period of D. melanogaster in F_1 generation, while it reduced the number of adults another effective concentration was 100 ppm which has shortened the pupa period in F_3 generation. The highest concentration (100 ppm) of 4-CPA applied on parent stock and F_1 generation has lengtened the pupa formation period in F_1 generation. …

Few studies of monogamous canids have addressed regurgitation in the context of extended parental care and alloparental care within family groups. We studied food transfer by regurgitation in a pack of wolves on Ellesmere Island, North West Territories, Canada, during 6 summers from 1988 through 1996. All adult wolves, including yearlings and a post-reproductive female, regurgitated food. Although individuals regurgitated up to five times per bout, the overall ratio of regurgitations per bout was 1.5. Pups were more likely to receive regurgitations (81%) than the breeding female (14%) or auxiliaries (6%). The breeding male regurgitated mostly to the breeding female …

We examined the seasonal migration and home-range dynamics of a multigeneration white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) matriline comprising six females from four generations spanning a 20-year period in northeastern Minnesota. All, from the matriarch to her great-granddaughter, migrated to the same summer and winter ranges, the longest individual record being 14.5 years. Three maternal females concurrently occupied exclusive fawning sites within their ancestral matriarch’s summer range, while two nonmaternal females explored new areas and ranged near their mothers. One great-granddaughter expanded her summer range 1 km beyond the matriarch’s summer range while essentially vacating half of her ancestors’ range …

There are no published records of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma imberbe) and Tropical Parula (Parilla pitiayumi) nesting in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas since the late 1940s. In this 1996- 1998 study, both species were confirmed nesting at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet was also confirmed at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park. Most Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet nests were between clumps of ball-moss (Tillandsia recurvata) in cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) trees, and nests were active from 21 March-23 September. The 42 honey bee colonies collected from 5 apiaries at 4 different localities in the Central Anatolia and breeder stock of Turkish Development Foundation (TKV) were used as the material of this research. The 32 morphological characteristics were determined for the Central Anatolian ecotypes (A. m. anatoliaca) obtained from Kırşehir, Beypazarı, Çankırı and Eskişehir and for the Caucasian race (A. m. caucasica). This investigation was carried out to determine the possibility of the use of sorbic acid in cemen and its effect on the microbial quality of pastrami. The pastrami samples were experimentally produced by the tradional metod. Seven hundred seventeen cattle, over the age of six months in the South Marmara Region (Bursa, Balıkesir and Çanakkale) were tested for the presence of Bovine Leukemia Virus (BLV)-antibody with ELISA.Blood and milk samples were taken from 362 and 355 cattle, respectively. Totally, sixty-nine cattle (9.62%) were found to be carriers of antibodies against BLV-gp 51 antigen.The BLV infection rate was found to be 13.25% and 5.91% in the sera and milk samples tested, respectively. The infection rate were determined to be 14.19 % in Bursa and 3.52 % in Balıkesir, but BLV seropositive cattle were not found in Çanakkale. …

Arginase (L-arginine amidinohydrolase; E.C. 3.5.3.1) enzyme activity levels in sperm, egg, fertilized egg and larvae (up to 25 weeks) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) taken from Fırat University, Faculty of Fisheries, Cip Fish Breeding Station were observed weekly. When the organs of rainbow trout were dissected under microscope, enzyme distribution in organs were investigated. Some biochemical properties of purified and non-purified rumen tissue arginase were compared. Homogenization, heating, treatment with aceton, precipitation with ammonium sulfate, dialysis, several centrifugations, gel filtration on sephadex G-200 processes were utilized in the purification procedure of the enzyme. It was found that pre-incubation temperature (60 °C) of arginase and Km (4mM) to its substrate, L-arginine, did not change before and after purification. While pre-incubation period was 10 min and optimal pH 9.7 before purification, pre-incubation period was found to be 5 min and optimal pH 10 after purification. In this study, the effects of water current on nutrient components of trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated. One year old fish averaging 550±0.06 g were used in the experiment which lasted for 3 months. Terminal carbohydrate moieties of apolipoproteins of lipoproteins in human and goat serum were ascertained and compared. Apolipoproteins of \beta+pre-\beta (apolipoprotein B containing lipoproteins) and a lipoproteins separated by phosphotungstic acid/MgCl_2 precipitation method were applied to SDS-PAGE and blotted onto nitrocellulose membrane. Pulmonary aspergillosis were examinated in a total of 22 geese (2-13 week-old), brought from A Geese Production Station in Kars and geese breeders. The lesions were seen as a hard nodules in all cases in the lungs, and also in 3 cases in the air sacs. They were multifocalty localized in each lobules, and 1-4 mm. in diameter and yellow in color. The lesions were characterized by granulomatous pneumonie and airsacculitis. The characteristic hyphae of Aspergillus spp. were demonstrated in granuloma in histopathological sections stained by periodic acid Schiff stain.

Ovine immunoglobulin M was isolated from sheep serum using gel filtration and affinity chromatography. Polyclonal and monoclonal antibodies against this isotype were prepared. The specificity of the monoclonal antibody was investigated using SDS-Page, immunoblotting, an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) and affinity chromatography. On immunoblotting, monoclonal anti-IgM reacted with a 70 kD protein which corresponded to ovine IgM.

Weaning weights are also 22.45 kg, 22.23 kg, 24.38 kg, 21.48 kg and 23.06kg for AC, AAC, AAAC, RAC and RAAC genotype respectively.

In this study, the sensory properties and shelf life of fish balls prepared from carp flesh were investigated. Four study groups were prepared with different combinations of ingredients: garlic, garlic-sunflower oil, onion and onion-sunflower oil. A control group was also prepared. At the end of the sensory evaluation, the groups received between 7.4 and 9.07 points from the panelists regarding appearance, texture, succulence, odour and flavour and general acceptance.
