Effect Of Restricted Feeding Of Parent On The Larval And Cocoon Characters Of The First Generation Silkworm (Bombyx Mori), Ümran Şahan, Cemaletti̇n Gülseren, Ahmet Özeler

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was conducted to determine the effect of nutritional stress due to reduction in the number of feeding days during the fifth instar of parental larva on the parental and following genaration for larval and cocoon traits. Mulbery leaves were provided during the fifth instar for different durations of 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 days, which were regarded as treatment. The normal span of feeding of these larvae were 8 days which was considered as control. A lot of larvae mortality occured due to feeding for 1 and 2 days therefore, these treatments were not considered. …

Possibilities Of Utilizing First Carbonation Sludge From The Sugar Industry As A Calcium Source In Layer Diets, Güray Erener, B. Zehra Sariçi̇çek

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This study was carried out to investigate the possible use of first carbonation sludge from the sugar industry in layer diets. 324 Babcock B-300 hens were used. Ground marble was replaced in the experimental diets by the sludge to provide the calcium requirements at the rates of 0, 20, 40, 60, 80 and 100%, respectively. Statistical analysis showed that there were significant differences between percentages (P0.05). The result of this study suggest that first carbonation sludge from the sugar industry could replace ground marble and the level of replacement should be 20% if the sludge is used in the layer …

The Importance Of \Omega-3 Series Fatty Acids In Marine Fish Larvae Nutrition And Recent Developments, Abdurrahman Polat, Gülsün Özyurt Jan 1999

The Importance Of \Omega-3 Series Fatty Acids In Marine Fish Larvae Nutrition And Recent Developments, Abdurrahman Polat, Gülsün Özyurt

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In general, marine fish larvae require \omega-3 HUFA, especially eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Larval growth, survival and larval activity are affected by dietary levels of essantial fatty acids. Some pathological signs, such as abnormal pigmentation, hydrops etc. and low feed conversion efficiency, poor growth, mass mortality are related to \omega-3 HUFA series fatty acids deficiency in larvae food. EPA/DHA ratio in live foods or microencapsuled diets is an important factor in larval development and survival.

Arginase Occurrence, Development And Distribution In Various Organs Of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus Mykiss), Sema Temi̇zer Ozan, Mi̇ne Eri̇şi̇r, Nai̇m Sağlam

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Arginase (L-arginine amidinohydrolase; E.C. 3.5.3.1) enzyme activity levels in sperm, egg, fertilized egg and larvae (up to 25 weeks) of rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) taken from Fırat University, Faculty of Fisheries, Cip Fish Breeding Station were observed weekly. When the organs of rainbow trout were dissected under microscope, enzyme distribution in organs were investigated. Arginase activities in sperm, egg, fertilized egg and rainbow trout (up to 3 weeks) were at unmeasurable level. Increase of enzyme activity was observed in fish after third week. Between the three and twenty five weeks of larvae arginase activity levels were between 0.018 ± 0.001 …

Comparison Of Several Models To Fit The Growth Curves Of Kıvırcık And Dağlıç Male Lambs, Yavuz Akbaş, Turgay Taşkin, Erdi̇nç Demi̇rören

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

This research was carried out to estimate the growth curves of Kıvırcık and Dağlıç male lambs using monthly body weight data from birth to 420 days of age. Fifteen models were compared in terms of growth curve parameters and for the best fit to the data of Kıvırcık and Dağlıç male lambs. Among the linear models simple linear model gave the best fit for Dağlıç and quadratic model for Kıvırcık. However heterogenity was found in terms of regressions equations within each breed and between genotypes. These results say that common regression equation can not be used for all individual in …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Concentrated fermented bifidus milk, acidophilus milk, Bifidus yogurt, Bioyogurt and yogurt were made from cow's and ewe's milk by using ultrafiltration and traditional methods. Sensory analysis and firmness was determined from concentrated fermented milk samples. The firmness of concentrated fermented milk products produced from cow's and ewe's milk by using ultrafiltration and traditional methods were significantly different (p < 0.05). However, the type of starter culture used and the interaction between product types and production methods was not significantly different (p > 0.05). Further, the different type of milk used and products were significantly affected on sensory properties of samples. All the products from cow's milk were marked with high scores. In addition, the most of panelist preferred yogurt to the other fermented dairy …

Some Properties Of Purified And Non-Purified Rumen Tissue Arginase In Cattle, Mi̇ne Eri̇şi̇r, Sema Temi̇zer Ozan

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Some biochemical properties of purified and non-purified rumen tissue arginase were compared. Homogenization, heating, treatment with aceton, precipitation with ammonium sulfate, dialysis, several centrifugations, gel filtration on sephadex G-200 processes were utilized in the purification procedure of the enzyme. It was found that pre-incubation temperature (60 °C) of arginase and Km (4mM) to its substrate, L-arginine, did not change before and after purification. While pre-incubation period was 10 min and optimal pH 9.7 before purification, pre-incubation period was found to be 5 min and optimal pH 10 after purification. Purified enzyme achieved its highest activity at 2 mM MnCl_2 concentration, …

The chicks in all groups were fed on standart chick and standart broiler ration. Cardiac enlargement and various degree of visceral uricosis were the main macroscopic lesions detected in group-1 and group-2. In group-3 and 4, such macroscopic lesions cardiac enlargement, testicular edema, hemorrhagic gastritis as were detected. Microscopic examinations showed the lesions related to macroscopic ones. …

Positive results were obtained from eight (2.03%) samples; seven (1.77%) of which were agglutinated with L. hardjo and one (0.25%) with L. grippotyphosa antigens. There was a statistically significant difference when the seropositivity rates were compared in different districts (p=0.002). Age and sex were not determined to affect the frequency …

Current Status Of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet And Tropical Parula In Bentsen-Rio Grande Valley State Park And Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, Southern Texas, Timothy Brush

School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)

There are no published records of Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet (Camptostoma imberbe) and Tropical Parula (Parilla pitiayumi) nesting in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas since the late 1940s. In this 1996- 1998 study, both species were confirmed nesting at Santa Ana National Wildlife Refuge, and Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet was also confirmed at Bentsen Rio Grande Valley State Park. Most Northern Beardless-Tyrannulet nests were between clumps of ball-moss (Tillandsia recurvata) in cedar elm (Ulmus crassifolia) trees, and nests were active from 21 March-23 September. Only fe. males build nests or incubate. Two-three young fledged per successful nest, but three nests were abandoned …
