A seven-month-old male collie was brought to our clinic with complaints of exhaustaion and fatigue for the past month, inability to stand on its hind legs, loss of voice and anorexia for the past week. In clinical examination, increase in heart frequency, difficulty in lifting the head, tetraparesis, regurgitation and urinary incontinence were observed. MG was suspected and 0.05 mg/kg i.m. neostigmine methylsulfate was given for clinical diagnosis. A positive response was seen within 30 minutes of drug application. Peptide Profile Of Low-Fat Edam Cheese, Erdoğan Küçüköner, Zahur U. Haque

Low-fat Edam cheese was manufactured using conventional cheese-making procedures using low-fat milk (1.5% fat). The cheese samples were aged for six months at 5 to 6°C. The cheese was analyzed for biochemical characteristics and peptide content. The peptide contents were determined with reverse phase chromatography. The association property of proteins and peptides in the soluble fraction of the cheese was determined using hydrophobic interaction chromatography. The overall peptide quantity increased with age with a marked increase in hydrophobic peptide content.

Efficacy Of Moxidectin Against Strongylin Nematodes In Naturally Infected Horses, Aynur Gülanber, Erkut Tüzer, Ayşen Gargili, Müfit Toparlak, İlker Efi̇l, Vedat Keleş, Meltem Ulutaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Twenty naturally infected horses were divided into two groups (10 control and 10 experimental) according to EPG values. An injectable formulation of moxidectin, in a dose of 0.3 mg/kg, was given to the horses orally in jam syrup. The evaluation of drug efficacy was based on EPG values. The same dose of the drug was applied to an additional 25 horses to test for side effects. The drug was found to be highly effective (100%) against strongylin parasites on days 7, 14. and 21. No side effects were observed.

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The chi-square and Wishart distributions play an important role in animal breeding applications, especially in the estima-tion of variance components using Bayesian methods. These two distributions are so related that one can easily be derived from the other. In other words, the chi-square distribution is a particular case of the Wishart distribution or the Wishart distribution is a mul-tivariate generalization of the chi-square distribution. This article provides a simple mathematical basis of the above-mentioned dis-tributions; it shows how one is derived from the other and in what from they are used in animal breeding applications.

This study was carried out to evaluate the effects of formaldehyde and blood treatments of sunflower meal on the degra-dation characteristics and effective degradability of dry matter(DM), organic matter and crude protein. Sunflower meal treated with 0.8 g formaldehyde/100 g crude protein, 0.5, 0.75, 1.5 and 2 L whole blood/kg DM. Three adult rumen fistulated merino rams were used in this study. Samples were incubated in the rumen for 2, 4, 8, 16, 24, 48 and 60 h. This study was carried out to investigate the glutathione level in Morkaraman, Morkaraman x Dorsetdown (F1) and Morkaraman x Corriedale (F1) lambs and to demonstrate its relationship with birth-weight and live-weight gain. Fourtyone Morkaraman, 36 Morkaraman x Dorsetdown, 30 Morkaraman x Corriedale lambs were used as animal materials. Blood samples obtained from the animals were analysed by using spectrophotometric technique for the level of glutathione. Primer oocytes (n=157) collected from ovaries of slaughtered cows were matured at 39°C with 95-100% humidity and under a gas mixture of 5% O 2 , 5% CO 2 and 90% N 2 for 22 (n=52), 24 (n=52) and 26 (n=53) hours. Modified Parker's Medium (MPM) supplemented with FSH and 20% ECS was used as maturation medium. Hibernation pattern and changes in the body weight of juvenile and adult dormice, Glis glis orientalis, kept in uncontrolled conditions were investigated. It was determined that G.g.orientalis entered hibernation on October 28 when its body weight was 180 g and the ambient temperature was below 18 ºC, which seems to be the critical temperature for entering hibernation. Although body weight has an important role in entering hibernation at the beginning of the hibernation season, dormice hibernated as the hibernation season progressed regardless of their body weight. In this study, the early development of barbel ( Barbus barbus L.) larvae has been determined by measuring their wet weight, dry weight, whole body mineral content (Ca, Mg, Na and K), skeletal development and gill development. It has been observed that wet weight, whole body mineral contents, the number of lamellae per filament of gill and the number of calcified vertebrae of larvae during early development stage increased by age, whereas dry weight decreased. Concentrations of cadmium, lead, copper, chromium and nickel were determined in the gill, liver and muscle of Cyprinus carpio, Barbus capito and Chondrostoma regium caught at 5 stations on the Seyhan river system. Heavy metal concentrations in the tissues tended to vary significantly among stations, and one station thought to be contaminated by hospital effluents showed particularly high metal concentration. Liver and gill tissues showed higher metal concentrations than muscle tissue. The wild boar control trials were conducted in rice fields in the districts of Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujrat, covering an overall area of 3000 hectares. Zinc phosphide encapsulated bait was used resulting in 80-100% reductions in wild boar activity. In addition, the impact of the boar control work on the crop productivity was evaluated by interviewing 391 farmers selected randomly from the trial areas. The average farm size of the sampled farmers was 426.30 hectares. The average yield loss due to wild boars was estimated at 22.75%. Among the filariaris causing mosquitoes Culex fatigans is considered an important intermediate host in South-East Asia. Toxicity of ethanolic extract of neem leaves (NLX) is compared with an organophosphate pesticide malathion (57 E.C.). The LC 50 value of malathion (Sisthion) determined presently is 0.45 ppm against late 3rd instar larvae of Culex fatigans (wild strain) and of neem fraction (NLX) is 390 ppm by standard WHO method.

Geographic Variations And Taxonomic Status Of Myotis Myotis (Borkhausen,1797) In Turkey ( Chiroptera: Vespertilionidae), İrfan Albayrak, Nursel Aşan

This study is a taxonomical evaluation of 146 specimens of Myotis myotis (Borkhausen, 1797) collected in Turkey between 1974 and 1994. Turkish Myotis myotis were compared with records from the Palaearctic Region. It was determined that both Myotis myotis myotis and Myotis myotis macrocephalicus are distributed in Turkey. The diagnostic characters, habitat, pelage colour, external and cranial measurements and distribution of each taxon were recorded.

In this study, ecology and biology of Microtus guentheriwere investigated based on both field and laboratory observations along with its effects on agricultural crops. It was determined that this vole has a shallow burrow with numerous entrances and does not store food in its burrow. In captivity, M. guentherigave litters from September to June and a female produced 42 pups, being seven litters during a reproduction season. The duration of pregnancy varied 20 to 21 days. In this study, the growth properties of tench ( Tinca tincaL., 1758) in the Kesikköprü Dam Lake between April 1995 and March 1996 were studied. In the specimens examined, ages ranged from I-VI in both sexes. The population was 51.43% female and 48.57% male. The fork length and weight in ranged from 16.1 to 41.4 cm and from 85 to 1350 g, respectively, and in males from 15.8 to 40.3 cm and from 83 to 1127 g, respectively. Influence Of Sediment On Heavy Metal Uptake By The Polychaete Arenicola Marina, Levent Bat

In this study, the suitability of the polychaete Arenicola marina as a test organism using clean intertidal sediment contaminated with copper, zinc and cadmium was evaluated. Metal levels in casts were significantly lower than in unworked sediment indicating that the bioturbatory activity of lugworms might be significant in the distribution of the pollutants. This study showed that sediments contaminated with specific pollutants affected the uptake of these pollutants by Arenicola in a predictable and dose–dependant way and gave further justification for the use of this species in sediment toxicity tests.

The parasite fauna in cetaceans from Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and the larger Caribbean region is poorly known. We provide the first records for parasite biodiversity among a diverse assemblage of cetaceans from the Caribbean Sea. Internal and external parasites and commensals were collected from stranded whales and dolphins salvaged in Puerto Rico, the United States and British Virgin Islands, Jamaica, and Venezuela between 1989 and 1997. A total of 47 individuals of 16 species of whales and dolphins (15 odontocetes and one mysticete) were examined. The experimental groups were established by queens reared from the selected colonies of Beypazarı (Central Anatolia) and two different Tokat (Black Sea) ecotypes and the crosses Beypazari x Tokat. Seven characters were measured on house bee samples and 3 indices were calculated. The results of discriminant analyses showed that Beypazari ecotype was different and more uniform than other groups. A deficiency in the slow moving gamma globulin in an eight-month-old emaciated female Awassi sheep is described. Analysis of serum protein electrophoresis (SPE) on cellulose acetate of this sheep revealed the presence of three fractions only; albumin (alb), a and b compared with that of the normal sheep which showed four fractions (alb, a and b and g).This finding occurred in a ewe which belonged to a closed breeding system awassi flock. In this study, 768 faecal samples were examined between June 1993-May 1994 to determine the species and the prevalence rates of Eimeriidae in the cattle of Thracia area (The European part of Turkey). The prevalence rate of eimeridosis was found to be 68%. The species determined and their prevalence rates were as follows: Eimeria bovis(34%), E.auburnensis(27%), E.zeuernii(26%), E.ellipsoiDalıs (14%), E.canadensis (12%), E.cylindrica (7.9%), E.supspherica (7.2%), E.alabamensis (4.9%), E.bukidnonensis (2.2%), E.brasiliensis (0.8%) and Isospora sp. Diffuse epididymal melanosis were determined in 9 cases of 446 (2%) slaugtered Redkaraman rams. The pigmentation was unilateral in 3 rams and bilateral in 6 rams. These epididymes were seen on greenish-blue in colour macroscopically. In the microscopic examinations, the melanin loaded cells were obserwed in the wall and/or intersititum of ductuli efferentes and ductus epididymis.

This study was made to investigate the structure of the ovaries of adult Brown bears which were brought to the Wildlife Research Centre (WRC) in Bursa. Ovaries obtained by laparoscopic surgery method, were divided into two pieces and fixated in buffered formalin. The 10-15 µ cryostat sections were stained with Oilred O stain method. The Coccidia Of The Gallinaceous Birds In Azerbaijan, Musa Musaev, Gamida Gaibova, Galiba Ismailova, Farida Alieva, Naila Iskenderova

In this study the data on the coccidia of gallinaceous birds in Azerbaijan were presented. Chickens and pheasants have already been examined earlier concerning the presence of Eimeria and Isospora. Peacocks and quails are studied in this aspect for the first time. The examination of the gallinaceous birds concerning the presence of crytosporidia oocysts has been also carried out for the first time. The results obtained are indicative of the presence of a few coccidian species in the gallinaceous birds which have not been detected in Azerbaijan before.
