Birds of Karapınar -Konya have been studied between 1994 and 1995. In which months these species are seen have been determined. 151 species determined belong to 16 orders and 46 families. A different geological and geographical region of Turkey have been shown to inhabit a very rich avifauna. Thus, this study aims to introduce this region, which will contribute to the conservation of the region from various respects( erosion, hunting etc.).

The purpose in planing this investigation was to contribute to the speciation problems in genus Spalax. For this, we examined the activities of Glucose-6-Phosphate Dehydrogenase (G-6-PD) and 6-Phosphogluconate Dehydrogenase (6-PGD) enzymes from the liver of Spalax samples taken from both sides of river Euphrates. The samples belonging to genus Spalax were separated into two populationsin the research area. The spesific activities of G-6-PD and 6-PGD enzymes were measured at 0.01 level of significance. The results were given in a table. The observed differences between the mean specific activities of te enzymes of the two populatons were discussed.

In this investigation, lizard species of Turkish Thrace are investigated indetail for the first time. Morphological characrteristics, range, distribution and subspecific states of the species are given. Furthermore, some observations concerning their biological and ecological characteristics are also given. In this study a total of 678 specimens and 10 species belonging to 3 families of Lacertilia have been investigated from Turkish Trace.

This paper presents the results of studies on the helminth fauna of the green toad, Bufo viridis, in Uzbekistan. Twently helminth species were identified. The highest diversity of helminths was recorded in toads in the newly-built districts of Tashkent (1966-76). The helminth fauna of the toads inhabiting foothills was less common.

The seasonal variation in natural levels of infection with procercoids of pseudophyllidean cestodes, Diphyllobothrium spp, and the abundance of Cyclops strenuus abyssorum (Copepoda) were studied in Loch Lomond, Scotland, From March 1993, to February 1994. The prevalence of infected copepods was found to increase with the temperature of the water, a peak occurring in June, while relatively low levels were recorded between December and March. The population density of C. strenuus abyssorum also exhibited seasonal variation, being higher during the warmer months. Water temperature in Loch Lomond, near Rowardennan, ranged from 3.2 to 16°C. The erythrocyte sizes of some anurans from Turkey (Rana ridibunda, Bufo bufo, Bufo viridis, Pelobates syriacus, Bombina bombina, Hyla arborea) were established utilizing blood smears stained with Wright's stain. The largest erythrocytes were found in R. ridibunda, the widest in B. bombina and the smallest in P. syriacus.

The present study is on 2 Brachyura species, collected by a scuba diver during investigations on the decapod fauna of the Sinop Peninsula shores of the Western Black Sea region, Turkey, between June, 1995, and July, 1996. Liocarcinus depurator (Linnaeus, 1758) and Brachynotus sexdentatus (Risso, 1827), which was found in the study area, has not been reported previously from Turkish Black Sea coastal waters.

After a review of the literature on the Tabanidae fauna of Turkey, it was found that 156 species and 12 subspecies have been reported. Twelve of the species are from the subfamily Pangoninae, 19 species and 2 subspecies are from the subfamiy Chrysopsinae and 125 species and 10 subspecies are from the subfamily Tabaninae.

The skull, teeth, phallus and bacula of Microtus guentheri specimens raised in the laboratory were investigated at different stages of postnatal development. The most of the cranial measurements attained those of adults on day 60. There were determined to be some morphological differences between the skulls of young and adult voles. The incisors and the molars began to erupt at 3 and 6 days, respectively. It was shown that there was no difference in respect to the phallic and bacular morphology between young and adults except for size. Effects Of Gut Sediment Contents On Heavy Metal Levels In The Amphipod Corophium Volutator(Pallas), Levent Bat, Dave Raffaelli̇

Concentrations of copper, zinc and cadmium were determined in Corophium volutator (with and without gut contents) exposed for 4 and 10 days to contaminated sediment. Significant differences were observed in metal concentrations among individuals, where gut contents were removed and those there they were left intact. On the other hand, the concentrations of these metals in Corophium were always high when no time was given for amphipods to depurate their guts. Therefore, it is recommended that either depuration in seawater or removal of the gut should be carried out before analysing amphipods for metal levels.

In most strains of the common housefly, Musca domestica, sex is genetically determined by the presence or absence of a Y chromosome with a dominant male determining factor, M. Standard trains have an XX-XY mechanism. In certain laboratory and natural populations, however, neither females nor males have the Y chromosome. These non-standard populations have autosomal mechanisms for sex determination. In the present study, the existence of two new autosomal sex determining factors, M V and F D , in housefly populations in Turkey was determined.

The effects of supplementing soybean meal-based diets with methionine on the growth and carcass-whole body chemical composition of T. zillii were studied during a 62-day feeding trial. A control diet prepared for T. zillii was supplemented with five different levels of free methionine, 0.5%, 1%, 1.5%, 2% and 2.5% (the same amounts of ?-cellulose were removed). At the end of the study, the best growth rate and FCR were determined in the group fed a diet supplemented with 0.5% methionine (total 1.38% methionine+cystine). In the present study, the zooplanktonic fauna of the Kunduzlar and Çatören dam lakes (Kirka basin-Eskişehir) was investigated during August 1994-June 1995. Eight species of Rotifera, five species of Cladocera and two species of Copepoda were identified in both dam lakes. In addition, the mean zooplankton abundance (ind. m -3 ) and physical and chemical parameters of dam lakes were given.

Acrida bicolor (Thunberg) and Locusta migratoria (Linneaus) nymphs were taken as objects to investigate the presence of neurohemal H-organ in Orthoptera of which was previously reported in Lepidoptera. A triangle-shaped H-organ was clearly observed in between the suboesophagial and prothoracic ganglions in two species.

Physiological Energetics Of Buccinum Undatuml. (Gastropoda) Off Douglas,Isle Of Man (The Irish Sea), Ahmet E. Kideyş

Physiological energetics of the common whelk ( Buccinum undatum) were studied in a population off Douglas, Isle of Man and an energy budget was constructed for the period February 1989 to January 1990. The components of the energy budget (in kJ m -2 year -1 ) for the population can be summarized thus: consumption (C)=753; growth production (P g )=34; reproductive production (P r )=4; mucus production=218; respiration (R)=96; ammonia excretion (U)=8; and faecal production (F)=393. Assimilation efficiency was 47.7%. P/B (annual production/biomass) was calculated as 1.40 representing an intermediate life span for this species.

The distribution and fluctation of dominant pelagic species>300µ(Copepoda, Chaetognatha, Scyhozoa, Ctenophora and ichthyoplankton) of the southern Black Sea were compared with that of dominant species of the North Sea and the Baltic Sea in relation to oceanographic and environmental features. In this study, 42 specimens of Allactaga euphratica from Urfa (Turkey) were examined based on morphological, cranial, external and karyological characters. A comparison of specimens from Urfa with those from Syria, Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq showed that specimens from Urfa, Syria and Jordan, Kuwait and Iraq showed that specimens from Urfa, Syria and Jordan differ from those from Kuwait and Iraq. Thus, specimens from Urfa (Turkey), Syria and Jordan were included in a new subspecies, Allactaga euphratica kivanci subsp. n.

We conducted no-choice and paired choice feeding trials with individually caged Nesokia indica to evaluate the efficacy of Bromadiolone, Cholecalciferol and Zinc phosphide baits. Under no-choice test (1 day and 3 day) male rats consumed less bromadiolone bait. However, sex-wise difference was observed non-significant. Under choice feeding test, difference between bromadiolone bait intake and sex was observed non-significant. Under cholecalciferol bait, treated bait was consumed more than plain bait. Among the baits tested, cholecalciferol appeared promising for controlling short-tailed mole rat, Nesokia indica.

In this study, the reproductive properties of the chub population ( Leuciscus cephalusL., 1758) in lake Tödürge, Zara/Sivas, were investigated. A total of 674 specimens were caught between April and November 1994. The age and sex distributions and the age of sexual maturity were determined. The reproduction period of the population was determined. Fecundity was determined and the relationships between the fecundity and body weight, length and age were investigated. The pineapple mealy bug ( Dismycoccus brevipes) infestation is reported for the first time from Pakistan, Ratoon, crownlet, slip and sucker plants were found infested by this bug. A total of 3464 bugs were collected from these plants with a mean value of 43.3 bugs/plant. Two-third (2291) of the bug population was found on the roots while one-third (1173) were recovered from the leaf base of the pineapple.

The wild boar control trials were conducted in rice fields in the districts of Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Faisalabad and Gujrat, covering an overall area of 3000 hectares. Zinc phosphide encapsulated bait was used resulting in 80-100% reductions in wild boar activity. In addition, the impact of the boar control work on the crop productivity was evaluated by interviewing 391 farmers selected randomly from the trial areas. The average farm size of the sampled farmers was 426.30 hectares. The average yield loss due to wild boars was estimated at 22.75%.
