Adding To The Reproductive Biology Of The Parthenogenetic Oribatid Mite, Archegozetes Longisetosus (Acari, Oribatida, Trhypochthoniidae), Michael Heethoff, Michael Laumann, Paavo Bergmann

Turkish Journal of Zoology

The oribatid mite, Archegozetes longisetosus, serves as a chelicerate model organism due to its relatively short life cycle and ease of laboratory culturing. It is a parthenogenetic species and all cultures recently used in different laboratories are descendants of a single female collected in 1993. While aspects of its developmental and functional biology have been published, knowledge of its reproductive rate and reproductive system is meager, and data on its life history are contradictory. Herein, we present the gross morphology of the reproductive system as obtained by SEM techniques and X-ray synchrotron microtomography, a new tool for studying mite anatomy. …

The total body lengths of both sexes ranged from 40 to 150 mm and the majority were in the 110 mm length class. Although the average lengths of both sexes were nearly the same, the average weight of male crayfish was higher than that of females. …

Gonad Histology And Spawning Pattern Of The White Grouper (Epinephelus Aeneus) From İskenderun Bay (Turkey), Mahmut Ali̇ Gökçe, İbrahi̇m Cengi̇zler, A. Argun Özak

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

The gonad histology and spawning pattern of the white grouper (Epinephelus aeneus) were determined from fish sampled from commercial catches. Histological, microscopic and macroscopic techniques were used to examine the ovaries of E. aeneus. A six stage maturity scale based on morphology was proposed to classify ovarian development. The results showed that the white grouper has an asynchronous mode of ovarian development, and the histological study of oocyte development in the white grouper indicated that two types of inclusion, first lipid and then protein, are formed during vitellogenesis. Towards maturation, protein granules and lipid droplets increased in size and number …

Annual Cycle Of Serum Gonadal Steroids And Serum Lipids In Capoeta Capoeta Umbla, Güldenstaedt, 1772 (Pisces: Cyprinidae), Orhan Erdoğan, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Hali̇loğlu, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş Jan 2002

Annual Cycle Of Serum Gonadal Steroids And Serum Lipids In Capoeta Capoeta Umbla, Güldenstaedt, 1772 (Pisces: Cyprinidae), Orhan Erdoğan, Hali̇l İbrahi̇m Hali̇loğlu, Abdulkadi̇r Çi̇ltaş

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

Seasonal changes in serum concentrations of the testosterone in males, 17\beta-estradiol in females and triglyceride and cholesterol in both sexes of Capoeta capoeta umbla were determined. Peak concentrations of testosterone (2.828 ± 0.278 ng/mL) and 17\beta-estradiol (3.182 ± 0.116 ng/mL) occurred in May. The concentrations of testosterone and 17b-estradiol were significantly correlated with the gonadosomatic index in both sexes. After the spawning period, steroid hormone levels significantly diminished (P < 0.05). The triglyceride concentration was highest in April (607.611 ± 30.146 mg/dL). The serum cholesterol level showed a rising trend until April and reached peak values during this month (393.000 ± 8.991 mg/dL). In the spawning month (May), a significant decrease was observed in triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations (P < 0.05). These results suggest that seasonal changes in both serum lipids and steroid hormones were associated with reproductive activity in C. c. umbla.

Turkish Journal of Zoology

In order to determine the reproduction characteristics of Liza ramada, a fish of economical importance, the GSI, egg diameter, sex maturity, age and sex ratio were examined in 228 specimens caught periodically, between February 1992 and July 1994 in Akgöl-Paradeniz Lagoon. According to the GSI % and egg diameter, the reproduction period of Liza ramada was determinedto be November and December. The lowest GSI % obtained for Liza ramada was 4.99 % in February and the highest values were16.67 % in November and 11.67 % in December. The average egg diameter of Liza ramadaranged from 0.15 to 0.69 mm. It …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In this study, the monthly variation in the blood glucose level of Capoeta capoeta capoeta caught from Aras between August 1995 and June 1996 was determined. The average blood glucose level was determined to be 112.04±5.19 mg/dl in males and 106.32±9.68 mg/dl in females and 110.06±4.19 mg/dl in the population. The blood glucose level was highest (141.07±13.67 mg/dl) in April, and lowest (69.14±9.75 mg/dl) in September. It was deter- mined that the level of blood glucose was related to temperature and reproduction.
