We conducted a study of the Western Lesser Siren (Siren intermedia nettinigi), at a locality termed the Airport Road site in Jonesboro (Craighead County, AR) from November 2004 until March 2007. This site consisted of a network of roadside ditches in cultivated lawns in an industrial park. Even though sirens are known to occur frequently in ditches, most studies of the genus Siren have taken place in natural wetlands. We compiled mark-recapture data at the Airport Road site for each season to determine if the seasonal activity pattern for sirens in northeast Arkansas varied from activity data previously published from …

The Fishes Of Crooked Creek (White River Drainage) In Northcentral Arkansas, With New Records And A List Of Species, H. W. Robison, C. T. Mcallister, K. E. Shirley

Journal of the Arkansas Academy of Science

A survey of the fishes of Crooked Creek, White River Drainage, in northcentral Arkansas was conducted using personal collections, historical records, literature records, and the Arkansas Fishes Database. The study revealed a total of 65 species of fishes distributed among 14 families. Earlier records of only 36 species in 10 families were documented. This study documents a total of 29 species and four families as new to the Crooked Creek stream system. In addition, no endangered or threatened species were collected

Geographic Distribution And Life History Aspects Of The Freshwater Shrimps, Macrobranchium Ohione And Palaemonetes Kadiakensis (Decapoda: Palaemonidae), In Arkansas, H. W. Robison, C. T. Mcallister

Two species of shrimps occur in Arkansas; they include the Ohio shrimp, Macrobrachium ohione (Smith) and the Mississippi grass shrimp, Palaemonetes kadiakensis Rathbun. The present survey is based on collections made between 1974 and 2008 with additional supplemental data from museum specimens to document the overall distribution of the 2 species. Our survey found a total of only 42 specimens of M. ohione from 6 localities (2 counties) in Arkansas, all taken from the Mississippi River. Summary Of Previous And New Records Of The Arkansas Darter (Etheostoma Cragini) In Arkansas, B. K. Wagner, M. D. Kottmyer, M. E. Slay

The Arkansas Darter, Etheostoma cragini, has an extremely limited distribution in Arkansas and is designated as a candidate for listing under the federal Endangered Species Act. It was first documented in the state in 1979 in Wilson Spring near Fayetteville. Between 1979 and 1985 it was collected in 4 additional headwater streams in Benton and Washington counties. A 1997 study documented the persistence of the species in 3 of the 5 historic streams, but 1 stream yielded only a single individual. Four oribatid mites new to the Turkish fauna, namely Licneremaeus licnophorus (Michael, 1882), Moritzoppia (Moritzoppia) tridentata (Forsslund, 1942), Lauroppia maritima acuminata (Strenzke, 1951), and Banksinoma lanceolata lanceolata (Michael, 1885), collected from Bolu province, Turkey, are given with their drawings and SEM photographs. On the basis of the collected samples, their morphological features and distributions in the world are also presented.

Distribution And Allometry Of The Knobby Swimcrab,Macropipus Tuberculatus (Roux, 1830) (Brachyura, Portunidae) In The Strait Of Sicily (Mediterranean Sea), Giandomenico Nardone, Sergio Ragonese

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Distribution and biometric information for Macropipus tuberculatus of the Strait of Sicily were obtained via an experimental bottom trawl survey carried out in 2000. The species occurred with low frequency (20%) and abundance (365 specimens), showing a scattered spatial distribution, split in 2 preferential depth levels (90-160 m and 230-460 m). Males were larger and more abundant than females. The carapace length width relationship was allometric positive (b > 1), and the carapace length weight relationship was isometric (b = 3).

The object of the study was to devise a quick and reliable method for the collection and study of lice present in birds without harm or stress being inflicted on the birds. Described is the feather ruffling collection of parasitic lice Saemundssonia australis from Chionis minor and microscopic observations thereof. A random selection of 10 free-flying Lesser Sheathbills were caught on Marion Island (46°54´S, 37°45´E) with the aid of a hand net. Approximately 10 lice from each bird were collected. An examination of benthic material collected from different depths (0-875 m) and habitats along the Turkish Levantine and Aegean seas between 1996 and 2008 has resulted in the identification of 819 scaphopod specimens, belonging to 10 species: Antalis dentalis (Linneaus, 1758), Antalis inaequicostata (Dautzenberg, 1891), Antalis panorma (Chenu, 1843), Antalis rossati (Caprotti, 1966), Antalis vulgaris (da Costa, 1778), Fustiaria rubescens (Deshayes, 1825), Entalina tetragona (Brocchi, 1814), Pulsellum lofotense (M. Sars, 1865), Cadulus jeffreysi (Monterosato, 1875), and Dischides politus (S. Wood, 1842). The Structure And Defensive Efficacy Of Glandular Secretion Of The Larval Osmeterium In Graphium Agamemnon Agamemnon Linnaeus, 1758 (Lepidoptera: Papilionidae), Jagannath Chattopadhyay

Histomorphological study of the larval (final instar) osmeterium gland in Graphium agamemnon agamemnon Linnaeus shows that each fully protruded Y-shaped osmeterium is composed of 2 elongated hollow tubular arms, which arise from a basal peduncle. The surface of the osmeterium has irregular folds, and papillae arise from some cells. There is an oval opening (gland pore, structurally less complicated than in other evolved species) in the proximal second seventh of the segment on each tubular arm on its posterior face. The ovariole development of laboratory-reared insecticide resistant and sensitive strains of the house fly, Musca domestica L. (Diptera: Muscidae) under different photoperiod regimes was examined. Flies were reared under laboratory conditions of 75 ± 5% RH, 25 ± 1 °C and 0:24, 6:18, 12:12, and 18:6 h L:D photoperiods. Each day, 20 female flies were collected from a cohort of females that had emerged on the same date. Ovarioles were dissected from the collected adults and microscopically examined to determine overall length and developmental stage. The biodiversity of the Specially Protected Marine Area at Foca (Turkish Aegean Sea) was studied by scuba diving during October 2008. In the framework of this study the actinarian Aiptasia mutabilis (Gravenhorst, 1831) was found for the first time in Turkish waters. This new record extends the known geographical distribution of the species.

This study is based on the Terellia species collected from 27 provinces of Turkey during 1999-2006. The locality, host plants (including new records), and figures of the wing pattern of each species are given. An identification key to all 15 species of Terellia known from Turkey is presented and their distribution in Turkey and other countries summarized.

Intraspecific Genetic Diversity Of The Oak Gall Wasp Andricus Lucidus (Hymenoptera: Cynipidae) Populations In Anatolia, Serap Mutun

Turkish Journal of Zoology

Intraspecific genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships of Andricus lucidus haplotypes from Turkey were studied by PCR-RFLP analysis. A total of 26 haplotypes were detected among 144 individuals collected from 9 populations. The estimated average haplotype and nucleotide diversity within populations were 0.8089 and 0.115542, respectively. Nucleotide divergence estimates among the analyzed oak gall wasp populations ranged between 0.012% and 7.3%. Dendrograms indicated that there was a relationship between the geographical distribution of haplotypes and their clustering. AMOVA analysis for estimation of the partitioning of genetic differentiation at all different hierarchical levels was statistically significant. Analysis of variance revealed that the …

The present study describes breeding and wintering abundances, distributions, and seasonal occurrences of shorebirds (waders) in the Gediz Delta (İzmir-Turkey). Breeding abundance and distribution, and wintering abundance data were collected by carrying out breeding bird surveys in 2002 and 2006, and waterbird censuses between 1990 and 2007, respectively. Seasonal occurrences were determined using 432 different observations corresponding to 5043 different records between 1990 and 2007. Thirty-eight wader species were observed with a weekly average of 22.5 ± 4.0. Breeding evidence was obtained for 9 species in 2002 and 8 species in 2006. The Orthoptera and Mantodea fauna of Kazdağı National Park (Balıkesir) were investigated. Field studies were conducted between 2004 and 2005. During this study, 34 species of Orthoptera (16 Tettigoniidae, 1 Oecanthidae, 2 Pamphagidae, 1 Tetrigidae, and 14 Acrididae) and 3 species of Mantodea were investigated. Isophya cania, Poecilimon luschani egrigozi, Anadolua schwarzi, Rhacocleis acutangula (Tettigoniidae), Paranocaracris rubripes burri (Pamphagidae), and one recently described species, Chorthippus (Glyptobothrus) kazdaghensis (Acrididae), are endemic taxa. Spermatheca and egg morphology of Eurygaster austriaca (Schrank, 1778) were studied by optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The spermatheca of E. austriaca is characterized by a spermathecal bulb, a pumping region, distal and proximal flanges and ducts, and a genital chamber. Each female was shown to deposit 14 green eggs on average in mass. The spherical eggs averaged 1.05 ± 0.05 mm in diameter. The first external evidence of embryonic development was the appearance of 2 red eye spots opposite each other beneath operculum followed by the appearance of a blackish T-shaped egg-burster between the eye spots. During the summer (July-August) of 2007, a total of 23 freshwater ostracods belonging to 14 genera were collected from 50 out of 90 different bodies of water in Diyarbakır. Of these 23 finds, Herpetocypris intermedia is a new report for Turkish ostracod fauna. In addition, 11 species (Ilyocypris decipiens, I. inermis, Eucypris virens, Herpetocypris brevicaudata, Psychrodromus fontinalis, Isocypris beauchampi, Potamocypris similis, P. unicaudata, P. arcuata, Limnocythere stationis, and L. inopinata) are reported from this city for the first time. This study is based upon material of family Pompilidae collected from different localities in Turkey between 2000 and 2009; the other related studies on the Pompilidae in Turkey were reviewed. Dicyrtomellus kizilkumii (Radoszkowski, 1877) is a new record for Turkish fauna. The authors present also an updated checklist of the Pompilidae fauna of Turkey. Including the new taxon determined in this study a total of 200 species and 5 subspecies from 35 genera of the family Pompilidae were recorded from Turkey to date. Cerceis insolita n. sp. (Isopoda, Sphaeromatidae), from the rocky intertidal region of Manora Island, Karachi coast, Pakistan, is described. The species can be identified on the basis of the following characters: antenna 1, pleon, pleotelson, coxal plates, pleopods 4 and 5, and notably by the unusual female pereopod 1 merus being short, transversely expanded, with the distolateral angle laterally produced into circular structure; carpus short, transversely expanded, propodus stout, curved laterally, with convex medial and concave lateral margins, dactylus subtriangular, well-developed unguis and accessory unguis. Length distribution, sex ratio, length-weight relationship, age, growth, spawning period, age, and length at first maturity of four-spotted goby inhabiting İzmir Bay were investigated. A total of 1696 four-spotted goby were collected by trawl hauls between July 2004 and June 2007. The size of the fish sampled ranged from 3.1 to 9.2 cm total length. The samples were composed of 31.1% females, 27.7% males, and 41.2% juvenile individuals, with a female to male ratio of 1:0.89. The age of the fish ranged from 1 to 5 years. The zooplankton community of Lake Küçükçekmece includes individuals from freshwater groups Rotifera and Cladocera, and also marine species Acartia clausi of the subclass Copepoda; Tintinnopsis nana, Favella sp. Jorgensen, 1924, and Strobilidium spiralis from the group Ciliata; Micronereis sp. Linnaeus, 1758 and Spio sp. Fabricius, 1785 from the class Polychaeta; Pleurobrachia pileus from the phylum Ctenophora; and Gammarus sp. Fabricius, 1775 from the order Amphipoda. Alterations In Ion Levels Of Freshwater Fish Oreochromis Niloticus Following Acute And Chronic Exposures To Five Heavy Metals, Gülüzar Atli, Mustafa Canli

Freshwater fish, Oreochromis niloticus, were individually exposed to 0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0, and 1.5 µg/mL of Cu^{2+}, Cd^{2+}, Cr^{6+}, Ag^+, and Zn^{2+} for 96 h (acute) and 0.05 µg/mL concentrations of the same metals for 0, 5, 10, 20, and 30 days (chronic). Following each period, metal accumulation and ion levels (Na^+, K^+, Ca^{+2}, and Mg^{+2}) were measured in the gills, kidneys, and muscles. Except for Ag^+, none of the metals killed the fish within 30 days. Silver killed all the fish within 16 days. Bracon hebetor Say (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) is a gregarious synovigenic parasitoid that attacks late stage larvae of many important lepidopterous species. The purpose of the current study was to evaluate the influence of 3 constant (18, 25, and 35 °C) and 1 alternating temperature (incubator programmed to vary daily between 18, 25, and 35 °C at 8 h intervals) on protein and lipid amounts of female and male parasitoids. Protein amounts of female parasitoids were highest when exposed to alternating temperature. Length-Weight Relationships For 21 Fish Species Caught In The Argolikos Gulf (Central Aegean Sea, Eastern Mediterranean), Kostas Kapiris, Dimitris Klaoudatos

The length-weight relationship for both sexes of 21 fish species caught in Argolikos Gulf (central Aegean Sea, eastern Mediterranean), using a variety of fishing gear, was estimated for the first time. Fishing took place between August 2007 and August 2008, and the fishing gear used included gill and trammel nets, long lines, and beach seines from 58 inshore fishing vessels. Individuals caught by trammel nets were usually longer and heavier than those collected by other fishing gear.
