Effects Of Strain On Response Of Laying Hens To Low Protein Diets And Amino Acid Supplements, Ali B. Kashani Jan 1978

Effects Of Strain On Response Of Laying Hens To Low Protein Diets And Amino Acid Supplements, Ali B. Kashani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Corn is by far the most widely used cereal grain in the United States for poultry feeding. In addition to its high energy content, corn provides adequate amounts of the essential fatty acids for maximum rates of growth and egg production. Palatability and ample xanthophyll and provitamin A contents of fresh corn are some o the other contributing factors for its popularity in livestock feeding. The most serious limitation in the nutritional value of corn as well as other cereal grains lies in the fact that they are low in both quantity and quality of protein. It has been a …

Deterioration Of Eggshell Quality And Calcium Metabolism In Laying Hens, Chang Won Kang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was undertaken to: (1) develop a reliable method of measuring eggshell quality, (2) determine whether diet alterations that cause a somewhat reduced rate of egg production could influence shell quality, and (3) determine whether certain biochemical parameters involved in calcium metabolism are related to shell quality.

Fatty Liver-Hemorrhagic Syndrome (Flhs) In Caged Laying Hens, Richard A. Nelson Jan 1978

Fatty Liver-Hemorrhagic Syndrome (Flhs) In Caged Laying Hens, Richard A. Nelson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

A series of eleven experiments was conducted with caged laying hens to study the effects of diet and strain on production and fat accumulation in the liver. In Experiments 1 to 4, a normal ad libitum feeding regime was used, while in Experiments 5 to 11, a force-feeding technique was used as a procedure to increase the incidence of FLHS. Four commercial hybrid strains and a straightbred SCWL (Regional Control) strain were utilized in this study. Choline supplementation at 1500 mg/kg of diet increased egg production from 1 to 11% while decreasing total liver lipid as much as 50%. Supplementation …

1977 Fall Field Day

The 1977 Fall Field Day started Saturday night with a get-together at the home of the George W. Browns in Kearney. Sunday, 2 October, started out gray and chilly, but eventually developed into the fine fall day which had been ordered and promised. The trip started at the Newark Township building and went north on Nebraska 10 to the north bank of the Platte River and explored eastward along the river. After that area had been covered the group went to an area northeast of Fort Kearney. After the lunch at the Newark Township building, at …

Sixty-Five Years Of Whooping Crane Records In Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard, Richard Redfield Dec 1977

Sixty-Five Years Of Whooping Crane Records In Nebraska, Paul A. Johnsgard, Richard Redfield

Nebraska Bird Review

In 1933, Myron Swenk determined the status of the Whooping Crane in Nebraska by summarizing all of the records then available to him, and established the general pattern of timing and geographic distribution of Whooping Crane occurrence in this state. Although the population of this species has remained very low since that time, a sufficient number of observations have been made to warrant updating his analysis and comparing the more recent records with these earlier ones. During the summer of 1977 the junior author undertook such a summary as a class project, by extracting such records from all of the …

Poultry Breeds Must Be Conserved : An Ideal Small Unit, R H. Morris Jan 1977

Poultry Breeds Must Be Conserved : An Ideal Small Unit, R H. Morris

Journal of the Department of Agriculture, Western Australia, Series 4

The Department of Agriculture is concerned at the rapid disapearance of some poultry breeds and strains over recent years. This trend has resulted from the disposal of flocks previously held by commercial poultry breeders and fanciers.

One way to stop the trend of disappearance of poultry breeds is for interested people to maintain a breeding flock of pure-bred poultry, making the progeny available to others.

This article describes a small unit suitable for housing breeding fowls. The unit is based on designs developed by the Department of Agriculture.

Review Of Random Sample Egg Laying Tests In W.A. - 1957 To 1975, R J. Bishop

Bulletins 4000 -

The First W.A. Random Sample Laying Test commenced at the Poultry Research Station, Herdsman Lake in 1957. Every year since that date to 1975 a new test has been conducted up to the Eighteenth Test, which was the last test conducted by the Department of Agriculture. The purpose of this review is to analyse the results of the tests over the years to determine whether the breeds entered in the tests and which are available commercially in this State have made progress. However, before proceeding with the detailed analysis of the test results, an outline of the changes that have …

Bulletin 3984 - Meat Ducks In W.A., T. J. Purling Jan 1976

Bulletin 3984 - Meat Ducks In W.A., T. J. Purling

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

While the duck industry in the Eastern States of Australia has used several breeds, Western Australia has until recently relied on the Muscovy. Most overseas countries with well developed meat duck industries have used the Muscovy only to a minor extent.

The Australian Pekin has been established in W.A. as an important meat breed since 1967/68, being suited to the production of large numbers of small carcass ducks throughout the year.

The Muscovy is still used for the large carcass trade, particularly at the Christmas and Easter seasons.

April Foods Of The Wild Turkey In Southern Illinois, David K. Fleenor Jan 1976

April Foods Of The Wild Turkey In Southern Illinois, David K. Fleenor

Masters Theses

A total of 95 gizzards and 106 crops were collected from 120 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris Vieillot) at hunter check stations located in Alexander, Jackson, Union, and Pope Counties during April 1970, and 1972-1974 inclusive. Results are presented using total aggregate volume and per cent occurrence. The analyses indicated that during April, 96.6% of the foods eaten were of plant origin. Important plant foods in decreasing order by volume included corn, acorns, grasses and sedges, clover, miscellaneous plant materials, Jack-in-the-pulpit, hickory nuts, black gum, swamp buttercup, spring beauty, soybeans, hill blueberry, hawthorn, and ash. Animal foods were …

Blood Parasites Of Illinois Wild Turkeys, Ulrike G. Guenthner Jan 1976

Blood Parasites Of Illinois Wild Turkeys, Ulrike G. Guenthner

Masters Theses

Blood smears, from 152 wild turkeys (Meleagris gallopavo silvestris) killed during hunting seasons in southern Illinois, were examined for blood parasites. Haemoproteus meleagridis infected 34% of the 83 adult and 19% of the 69 immature turkeys. Of the infected birds, 54% had one or two infected cells per 5000 erythrocytes and 78% had one to five. Infection rates were significantly higher in counties along the Mississippi River than in Pope County, located about 40 miles east of the river. Other parasites specifically searched for but not found were Leucocytozoon, Plasmodium, Trypanosoma and microfilaria.

Bulletin No 3963 - Raising Quail, P Smetana Jun 1975

Bulletin No 3963 - Raising Quail, P Smetana

Bulletins - 3000 - 3999

Quail were first domesticated about a thousand years ago, but it was not until the beginning of this century that they were used for meat and egg production.

Commercial quail production is common in many parts of Asia, particularly where there are Chinese communities. In 1965, it was reported that the quail industry in Japan was second in size only to that of the domestic fowl in terms of avian species. Fried or roasted quail and hard boiled eggs are commonly offered for sale in various parts of Asia. Quail eggs are also sought after for sharks fin soup.

Amino Acid Additions To A Low Protein Corn-Soy Diet For Egg Production, Ali Baghaye Kashani

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The present study was conducted to determine if the protein level of layer diets could be lowered from the: commonly used 16 percent to 12 percent by supplementation of some of the essential amino acids without reducing the performance of hens. The amino acids used were methionine, lysine, tryptophan and isoleucine. Egg production, egg shell thickness, interior egg quality, body weight, feed efficiency and free amino acid content of the albumen of eggs produced were criteria used to measure the (--) to treatment.

Pesticide Residues In The Illinois Wild Turkey, John M. Bridges

Masters Theses

Adipose tissue from 55 turkeys, killed during the 1974 hunting season in southern Illinois, was grouped by age and location of the birds, and the pesticide concentrations in them were determined by gas/liquid chromatography. Twelve different pesticides were identified in the samples with only four, total DDT, heptachlor epoxide, toxaphene, and linuron, being present in all samples. Concentrations ranged from 0.02 ppm to 0.88 ppm.
