As pointed out by Jackson (1971) and Patton (1972), the key to understanding mechanisms of chromosomal evolution lies in studies of chromosomal variation within populations that can hybridize. Hybrids between cytotypes contain the answer to problems of meiotic pairing and reduced fertility, as well as information concerning the nature of zones of contact. However, before detailed studies can be initiated, chromosomal races and hybrid zones must be located. Few chromosomal races have been described for bats (Baker, 1970a). Introduction
Spiny pocket mice of the genus Liomys are members of the rodent family Heteromyidae and together with the genus Heteromys form the subfamily Heteromyinae. Their geographic range extends from northern Sonora, in western Mexico, and southern Texas southward to the vicinity of the Panama Canal Zone. Within this area, members of the genus occur mainly in dry to arid situations being replaced in areas of rain forest and cloud forest by members of the genus Heteromys. Of the 12 measurements analyzed, only length of tail exhibited enough individual variation to warrant its deletion in analysis of geographic or interspecific variation in the genus Choeroniscus. Also, because of the difficulty in consistently taking the measurement, we also suggest elimination of postorbital constriction.
Specimens of Choeroniscus intermedius were found to exhibit significant secondary sexual variation in five of the 12 measurements studied. Therefore, it is clear that males and females should be separated in analyses of variation within members of the genus. Our field investigations on the Yucatán Peninsula were initiated in the summer of 1962 when two field parties from the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas visited the area. One field party consisted of W.E. Duellman and six students enrolled in a summer field course in vertebrate zoology; the other party was composed of the senior author and four students who were conducting a survey of Middle American terrestrial vertebrates and their ectoparasites. Since the publication of "Vernacular names of North American mammals north of Mexico" by Hall et al. (1957) and its subsequent revision (Hall, 1965), systematic and other studies have contributed materially to a better understanding of the nomenclature of North American mammals. For this reason, and because of the usefulness, principally to students, of checklists that record both scientific and vernacular names, an updated listing of New World mammalian species north of Mexico is timely. As in the previous lists, a specific vernacular name applies to all populations of that species.

The varied topography and climate of the Mexican state of Jalisco have resulted in a diverse mammalian fauna, no comprehensive account of which has been published. Significant collections of mammals from Jalisco were obtained for the Museum of Natural History, the University of Kansas, between 1949 and 1969 by field parties and individual field representatives, most notably J. R. Alcorn, R. W. Dickerman, and especially P. L. Clifton. Goodwin and Greenhall (1961) in their monograph of the bats of Trinidad and Tobago recorded 58 species of chiropterans from the island of Trinidad. In two subsequent publications (Goodwin and Greenhall, 1962, 1964) these authors recorded Mesophylla macconnelli, Prornops nasutus, and Phylloderma stenops from Trinidad bringing the number of species known from the island to 61. In August 1967, one of us (R. J. Baker) and Larry Deaven netted bats on Trinidad in connection with ongoing studies of chiropteran karyology, and obtained two species not previously recorded.

The fauna and flora of the Mexican state of Jalisco have received the much deserved attention of a number of biologists in recent years. Nevertheless, few comprehensive accounts of the biota of this interesting and physiographically diverse area have been published. In the period from 1949 to 1969, field representatives of the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas collected vertebrates in Jalisco. The distribution of the mammals in the southwestern part of North Dakota and their ecological and taxonomic relationships have not been well documented. In addition to Vernon Bailey's (1927) survey of mammals of the state, based primarily upon field work conducted between 1912 and 1916, the only other principal studies dealing with the mammalian fauna of southwestern North Dakota were a preliminary report of the mammals of the state by Bailey et al. The genus Blarina (Mammalia: Soricidae) is represented in Nebraska by two well-differentiated, geographically exclusive phena that generally have been regarded as subspecies. Field studies conducted along their zone of contact resulted in the collection of representatives of both phena at each of five localities. Cluster analysis of distance matrix readily separated reference samples of the phena as well as test samples from near the zone of contact. A three-dimensional projection of the specimens onto their first three principal components, together with a discriminant function analysis, served further to elucidate the degree of differentiation among the phena and to confirm that …

Additional specimens of Sciurus richmondi are reported, along with comments on variation, distribution, reproduction and molt in this little known squirrel. As presently understood, S. richmondi occurs only in the Caribbean rain forests of Nicaragua. Significant secondary sexual variation in adults was found only in zygomatic breadth, in which females are the larger. Available evidence reveals that the breeding season extends at least from February to September, and suggests two seasonal molts annually.

In the course of a systematic revision of the spiny pocket mice of the genus Liomys, a series of large, brightly colored mice from several localities in southeastern Jalisco was studied. Individuals in this series appeared to be morphologically distinct from mice typical of Liomys pictus plantinarensis Merriam. 1902, taken in the same traplines at several localities, and from specimens of Liomys irroratus jaliscensis (J. A. Allen, 1906), a taxon that also occurs in southeastern Jalisco. For more than 100 years, the red fruit-eating bat, Stenoderma rufum Desmarest, 1820, was known only by a specimen of unknown geographic provenience. Anthony ( 1918, 1925) rediscovered Stenoderma in Puerto Rican cave deposits, but the first living specimens to be reported since the original description were taken on St. John in the Virgin Islands (Hall and Bee, 1960). Subsequently, Tamsitt and Valdivieso (1966) recorded living representatives from Puerto Rico-from a population later named and described as a distinctive subspecies, Stenoderma rufum darioi, by Hall and Tamsitt (1968). Harvest mice of the genus Reithrodontomys first were reported from Nicaragua by Oldfield Thomas (1907), who originally described Reithrodontomys sumichrasti modestus based on a single specimen from Jinotega. J. A. Allen (1908, 1910) recorded additional specimens of R. s. modestus, which still was the only species known from the country when A. H. Howell (1914) revised the genus Reithrodontomys. In his thorough review of Latin American harvest mice, Hooper (1952) added a second species, Reithrodontomys mexicanus lucifrons, to the Nicaraguan fauna, and Englert (1959) and Anderson and Jones (1960) recorded three additional kinds. Ecological studies on the distribution of fairy shrimps have been made from 246 sites in the sandhills region of Nebraska. New records for Nebraska have been established for Artemia salina, Branchinecta campestris, B. lindahli, B. mackini and Cyzicus mexicanus. Seasonal populations of shrimp have been located in habitats containing permanent fish populations. Water mineralization was the dominant environmental condition related to the distribution of phyllopods with sodium and potassium compounds predominating in the strongly alkaline lakes. Several of the Artemia lakes were classified as hydroxide sites. Many of the alkaline ponds, where B. lindahli and B. campestris flourish, are …

Summary
Phlyctainophora squali sp. nov. is described from 23 female specimens recovered from the subcutaneous tissue of one of 440 Squalis acanthias caught off Los Angeles, California. This finding represents a new host and distribution for this genus. Phlyctainophora is placed in the family Philometridae on the basis of atrophication of vulva and anus, simple mouth, viviparity and location in tissue of fishes. The family diagnosis for Philometridae is amended to include Phlyctainophora which lacks an anterior ovary.

Specimens of spotted skunks acquired from western Mexico by the Museum of Natural History at the University of Kansas in the past two decades add substantially to the knowledge of the species occurring in that region. Two specimens of the rare Spilogale pygmaea (one from Sinaloa and one from Oaxaca) are reported for the first time. Two subspecies of pygmy spotted skunk are recognized - S. p. pygmaea Thomas with type locality at Rosario, Sinaloa, and S. p. australis Hall with type locality at Acapulco, Guerrero.

Wieczorowski S. - The alimentary tract and the lungs parasites in hares in Białystok voivodship
87 parasitic sections were made of hares coming from Białystok voivodship territory. The investigations lead to the conclusion that the hares are 100 percent invaded by parasites. Among the roundworms of the alimentary tract, the most frequent are the following: Trichostrongylus retortaeformis (78.1 percent) and Trichocephalus sylvilagi (43 percent). Coccidiosis is also widespread; it was found in 77 percent of the investigated animals.

From July 6 to 11, 1966, vertebrates were collected on Volcan de Fuego, Jalisco, for the Museum of Natural History,the University of Kansas, by Hugh H. Genoways and Percy L. Clifton. On July 10, a shrew of the genus Cryptotis was obtained on a steep slope across the valley to the north of the active cone of the volcano. A new subspecies of Myotis thysanodes, possibly representing a disjunct population, is described from the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming. The new race is compared with M. t. thysanodes and also with Myotis evotis evotis, which it superficially resembles.

The Symposium on Partridge was organized by the Forestry and Czechoslovak Game Management Research Institute and the Czechoslovak Hunting Union and held in Prague, Czechoslovakia in October 1965. Participants in the symposium were specialists and scientific workers from Czechoslovakia and some scientists from abroad. There were two major themes: 1. the present state of partridge research and 2. conservation issues, including the problems and prospects of partridge stocks.

The Minnedosa study area is located in the southwestern portion of Manitoba just south of the town of Minnedosa. It is 90 square miles in size and roughly square in shape. The Aspen Parkland, in which the study area is located, is characterized by gently rolling terrain and black soils. Mixed farming is the rule with emphasis on small grain production consisting of wheat, barley, and oats. Roughly 50 percent of the water areas in the parkland are ringed with aspen, Populus tremuloides, and large blocks of aspen are interspersed throughout the area. This monograph summarizes the known information on taxonomy, morphology, life cycle, hosts, location in the host, pathogenicity, geographic distribution, and cross-transmission studies of the 196 named species of coccidia of rodents. These include 176 species of Eimeria, 9 of Isospora, 3 of Wenyonella, 2 each of Cryptosporidium and Klossiella, and 1 each of Dorisiella, Caryospora, Tyzzeria, and Klossia. In addition, similar data are given for those forms for which insufficient information is available to justify assigning them names.
