Consumer Perceptions Of Hemp-Fed Aquaculture, Jillian Hyink
Consumer Perceptions Of Hemp-Fed Aquaculture, Jillian Hyink
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Global demand for seafood has increased significantly over the past several decades and is projected to continue rising in the future. The volume of aquaculture production has also particularly increased to meet this demand in the United States and globally, offering a relatively sustainable supplement to wild fish supplies. However, conventional fish farming uses unsustainable quantities of fishmeal and fish oil as feed inputs, which raises the cost of production and introduces safety concerns associated with fish consumption. One currently underexplored potential alternative to fishmeal is hemp grain, which can provide an affordable and nutritious feed for carnivorous fish and …
Modeling Enterococcus Cecorum Horizontal Transmission To Investigate The Impact Of Perinatal Exposure On Extraintestinal Colonization, Disease Presentation, And Performance In Young Broiler Chickens, James Y. Higuita Valle
Modeling Enterococcus Cecorum Horizontal Transmission To Investigate The Impact Of Perinatal Exposure On Extraintestinal Colonization, Disease Presentation, And Performance In Young Broiler Chickens, James Y. Higuita Valle
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Enterococcus cecorum (EC) has primarily been associated with osteomyelitis and lameness in older chickens. The recent emergence of pathogenic EC causing morbidity and mortality in young broiler chicken flocks requires further investigation. The purpose of this thesis was to develop a model to simulate horizontal transmission of virulent EC during the hatching phase in small scale hatchet cabinets. The model will be used to investigate novel pre- and post-hatch strategies to mitigate EC infections in young broiler chickens. The current thesis contains four chapters. Chapter I includes the thesis introduction. A literature review focusing on EC-associated disease in chickens, with …

Previous studies with broiler breeders indicate a P retention threshold when fed daily dietary levels of non-phytate P (NPP) exceeding 320 mg. Fibroblast growth factor 23 (FGF23) is a hormone secreted by osteocytes which modulates P retention and could be the biological agent which controls the P threshold in breeders. To evaluate the relationship between FGF23 and the P retention threshold, a 4 -wk study with 32 -wk -old breeders was conducted with 6 dietary treatments with daily NPP intake of 216 to 576 mg/d/h with increments of 80 mg/kg diet. The goals were 1) to …

In the food industry, assessing the quality of poultry carcasses during processing is a crucial step. This study proposes an effective approach for automating the assessment of carcass quality without requiring skilled labor or inspector involvement. The proposed system is based on machine learning (ML) and computer vision (CV) techniques, enabling automated defect detection and carcass quality assessment. To this end, an end -to - end framework called CarcassFormer is introduced. It is built upon a Transformer -based architecture designed to effectively extract visual representations while simulta- neously detecting, segmenting, and classifying poultry carcass defects. Our …
Information About Honey Fraud: Implications Of Information Choice For Consumer Behavior, Christopher R. Gustafson
Information About Honey Fraud: Implications Of Information Choice For Consumer Behavior, Christopher R. Gustafson
Cornhusker Economics
The study highlights that standard research practice—exposing participants to information—may not capture what will happen outside of the lab when people have a choice about what to read, view, or do with their time. While we found that having participants read about honey fraud significantly shifted their willingness to pay for local and domestic versus imported honey, we did not find those changes when people were able to select a text to read.
The implications of these findings extend beyond the issue of honey fraud to broader contexts of food safety, nutrition, and production techniques. While people have preferences for …

Trypanosomiasis, a parasitic disease caused by protozoan parasites of the genus Trypanosoma, poses a significant threat to camel populations worldwide. This study designed for the diagnostic techniques used for detecting Trypanosoma infections specifically in camels. The disease, commonly known as camel trypanosomiasis or surra, adversely impacts the health and productivity of camels, thereby affecting livelihoods dependent on these animals. Various diagnostic methods are employed for the detection of Trypanosoma infection in camels, including microscopic examination of blood smears, serological tests like ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay), and molecular techniques such as PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction). Each method has its strengths and …

Poisonous Plant Research (PPR)
Death camas (Zigadenus spp) is a perennial forb found throughout the western United States, which is known to kill both sheep and cattle. In a previous study, goats appeared to be somewhat resistant to the adverse effects of death camas. Therefore, the objective of this study was to directly compare the susceptibility of goats and sheep to the acute toxic effects of death camas. Sheep and goats were dosed at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 4.0, and 6.0 g death camas per kg BW. The data presented in this manuscript suggest that goats are more susceptible to death camas than sheep. …

Deferred Grazing And Sheep At The Break Of Season In South West Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Deferred Grazing And Sheep At The Break Of Season In South West Western Australia, Department Of Primary Industries And Regional Development, Western Australia
Animal production and livestock factsheets
Grazing annual pastures in the first 12 days after germination can lower the productivity of pastures during winter by removing poorly rooted plants, and by reducing plant leaf area to sub-optimal levels. The Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) recommends deferring grazing of pasture paddocks at the break-of-season until feed on offer is at least 500–800 kilograms of dry matter per hectare (kg DM/ha). At this level, pasture plants are likely to be firmly rooted and have sufficient leaf area to be productively grazed.

Further reductions of crude protein in broiler diets may cause essential amino acids traditionally considered to be supplied at adequate levels to become limiting. Requirement data for histidine are currently scarce and this amino acid is uniquely able to be stored within the body. Thus, the objectives of this study were to evaluate female Cobb 500 broiler growth performance and carcass characteristic responsiveness to increasing digestible histidine to digestible lysine ratios (dHis:dLys) during a 22- to 42-day feeding period and determine if dHis:dLys in preceding feeds influence the former responses. Starter diets were formulated to contain dHis:dLys of 33% or …

Ensuring good water quality is one of the key management strategies to promote optimal broiler health and performance. A few studies have assessed the microbial status of drinking water for poultry, but there is insufficient information on biofilm in the drinking water lines within the poultry housing facilities. The buildup of microbes in the drinking water system could potentially result in biofilm formation which eventually deteriorates water quality. Hence, in this preliminary study, we sought to evaluate biofilm formation in the drinking water lines of selected broiler houses and characterize their microbial composition. Three random houses in each of 5 …

Perceived Benefits And Barriers To Livestock Mortality Composting, Rachel Wieme, Lynne Carpenter-Boggs
Journal of Extension
We conducted webinars in 2020 about livestock mortality composting (LMC). Forty-five attendees completed a survey to evaluate the webinar and help define future educational needs. Major barriers to LMC were lack of experience, public and neighbor perceptions, and environmental management. Most respondents indicated convenience, cost, biosafety, use of product, and environmental management as benefits. An unexpected emotional theme indicated that LMC also supports the “circle of life” and “respect for the animal.” We propose that this theme may be a uniting message to improve public and producer perception of LMC, increase use of LMC, and improve public-producer relationships overall.

Ancient Wisdom, Modern Prosperity: Harnessing Traditional Ecological Knowledge To Revitalize Australia's Economy, Environment, And Human Wellbeing, Annabelle L. Baulch
Student Theses 2015-Present
This paper explores the traditional knowledge of Australia’s Indigenous people and how it can improve Australia's environment, health, and economic prosperity to shape a more sustainable future. Indigenous Australians managed the land for thousands of years; however, being forced off the land following European colonization resulted in terrible cultural, social, and environmental disruption for Aboriginal Australians and made conservation efforts difficult. Wildfires, imported species, mining, and agriculture is steadily destroying the Australian ecosystem, contributing to climate change, species extinction, and gaps in our cultural and ancestral knowledge. Chapter One overviews Australia's environmental issues; it uses quantitative data to explore the …
