The marked improvement in the apparent nutritive value of soybean protein after heating has long been recognized. The fundamental cause of this improvement has never been fully understood. Furthermore, commercial soybean oil meal varies considerably in nutritive value although heat treatment is common in most processing plants. Since heating is generally regarded as deleterious to the nutritive quality of protein, the following investigations of various treatments of soybean oil meal are of particular importance in developing a soybean or soybean oil meal of maximum and uniform nutritive value.

1. Day-old poults were found to contain an average of 1.28 g nitrogen, 0.18 g calcium and 0.15 g phosphorus. 2. Day-old poults were fed equal amounts of a good growing ration for 52 days. Analysis of these poults showed retention of 42.6 per cent of the nitrogen, 23.4 per cent of the calcium and 31.3 per cent of the phosphorus contained in the ration. 3. Retentions of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus were on the same order as those obtained in like feeding trials with chicks.

Every producer knows that heat is harmful to the quality of eggs, and that the first step in holding fine egg quality is prompt removal of the animal heat. The Nebraska egg cooler has been developed for this purpose. Construction costs are moderate, and repeated observations demonstrate the effectiveness of the principle. Its basic factor is the temperature-reducing effect of cool, humid air passing over the eggs, as soon as possible after they are gathered.

Salmonellosis suis or pig typhus, also designated as pig typhoid, infectious necrotic enteritis, or "necro," is an infectious disease among young pigs. It constitutes a major factor in the mortality of juvenile swine, and as such must be regarded as a more or less perennial hazard in swine production. Infectious necrotic enteritis caused by Salmonella suipestifer is the subject of the present publication.

Vitamins are chemical substances essential for the maintenance of life, growth, and reproduction. Their effects are out of proportion to the relatively small amounts required. Fortunately, most of these essentials are widely distributed in nature, and an adequate ration can nearly always be provided by using logical combinations of common feedstuffs. Under certain conditions, however, the use of vitamin-containing concentrates may be desirable. In planning practical rations, it should be recognized that the plant leaf is the source of most vitamins. The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xi. A Comparison Of Ground Wheat And Ground Rye In Rations For Growing Chicks, C. W. Ackerson, W. E. Ham, F. E. Mussehl

1. The effect of replacing the shorts and bran of a standard ration by ground wheat or ground rye was studied with two lots of newly hatched chicks. 2. Comparisons were made on the basis of equal intakes of dry matter and nitrogen by all chicks. 3. The wheat-fed lot made a significantly greater gain than the rye-fed lot. 4. Several cases of curled-toe paralysis occurred in the two lots, and a tendency to cannibalism appeared in the rye-fed lot.

1. The effect of replacing the open-pollinated corn with hybrid corn in an otherwise complete ration was studied in a growth and body analysis experiment with two lots of newly hatched chicks. 2. The pelleted rations were consumed in identical amounts by all chicks of both lots. 3. There were significant differences in the growth rate of the chicks at the end of a six-weeks feeding trial in favor of the lot fed open-pollinated corn.

Advantage was taken of an opportunity to study the effects of penicillin on Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, the causative organism of swine erysipelas. Owing to the fact that swine cannot readily be infected with erysipelas by artificial methods, pigeons which are highly susceptible to the disease, were selected to serve as experimental animals. It was the purpose of these studies to ascertain whether or not the swine erysipelas bacillus is sensitive to the drug and incidentally to determine the possibility of finding application of penicillin in the treatment of swine.

The carotene content of twenty-four grasses native to Nebraska were determined at approximately monthly intervals from June to November. While the carotene concentration of most of the grasses was moderately high during the growing season, it declined to a rather low point by late November. With the exception of Switchgrass, Hairy Grama, Little Bluestem and Prairie Dropseed, all of the grasses contained enough carotene to supply the needs of range cattle until late November. However, only eighteen of the grasses still contained enough carotene by the latter part of September to furnish the carotene required by dairy cows. Even as …

Perhaps one of the most valuable lessons to be learned from a study of chick brooding is that good results can often be obtained in more ways than one. In carrying on work with electric brooders at the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station, special attention has been given to such factors as insulation and to other details of design which effect economy of operation and ease of construction. Low cost rather than "cheapness" has been the ideal. The work has been cooperative between the Agricultural Engineering Department and the Poultry Husbandry Department of the University of Nebraska.

A breeding experiment with 295 dairy cows and heifers of the Jersey, Guernsey, Ayrshire, and Holstein breeds was conducted in the University of Nebraska dairy herd. The females were given artificial services at various stages of estrus to determine the effect of time of service upon conception. The results obtained indicate the potential benefits in higher percentage of conception in females bred during the middle of estrus, toward the end of estrus, and those bred in full heat and rebred in 24 hours. This preliminary experiment does not answer all of the questions that are presented about manganese and iodine requirements. It can only be taken to indicate that for a typical situation with a typical ration of the type that many poultry producers use, there was no satisfactory evidence that egg production, hatchability and the viability of the hens was limited by manganese and iodine in the ration.

The manufacturing of dairy products on a commercial scale began about the middle of the nineteenth century and was greatly stimulated by the development of the centrifugal cream separator in the late eighties. The invention of the Babcock test in the early nineties overcame some of the difficulties that had developed in paying for milk upon its butterfat content, since it was early recognized that milk varied widely in that respect.

In the dairy industry increasing attention is being paid to the question of quality of products. The well established system of buying and selling butter and cheese on the basis of quality by score or grade is practiced in the principal markets of the world. The other dairy products, while not marketed by score, are receiving more and more attention in this respect. As more information becomes available and the judging better standardized, other dairy products will doubtless be sold by grade.

The care given milk and milk products should be such that they will be relished by young and old alike. Greater use of milk can be encouraged by serving fresh milk cold. Cooling of milk also insures a fine product several hours after production. This is important not only for milk that is to be used, but for milk or cream that is to be sold.

The effect of replacing one-third of the concentrate of a ration for growing chicks with a mixture of starch and urea that contained an amount of nitrogen equal to that contained in the concentrate withdrawn from the ration was studied with two lots of chicks. 2. All chicks of both lots consumed equal amounts of nitrogen during the experiment. 3. Conclusions were based on increases in body weight and content of nitrogen, calcium and phosphorus at slaughter.

The proteins of the entire wheat kernel and of the bran and shorts are apparently utilized with equal efficiency by growing chicks when used with a base of corn, barley, oats, meat scraps, fish meal, and soybean meal. The relatively higher protein levels of bran and shorts, as compared to ground wheat, should be considered by the poultry producer in deciding which product or products can be used with greatest economy. The sandhill area of Nebraska occupies approximately 20,000 square miles of the central portion of the state. Being unadapted to cultivation, the land is for the most part still covered with native vegetation. It is utilized primarily for the production of livestock, chiefly cattle. During the period 1931 to 1938 the sandhills carried annually an average of 1,041,000 cattle, which amounted to 31 per cent of the total number in the state. The management practices used in the Nebraska sandhills have gained national recognition as a good example of range conservation in the United States. The purpose of this study …
