Comparative Assessment Of Crops To Use Potential Additional Water Resources In The Warren–Donnelly Catchments, James Dee, Ananda Ghose Apr 2016

Comparative Assessment Of Crops To Use Potential Additional Water Resources In The Warren–Donnelly Catchments, James Dee, Ananda Ghose

Bulletins 4000 -

Through the Royalties for Regions funded Southern Forests Water Futures Project, the Department of Agriculture and Food, Western Australia undertook a study to understand the economic benefits of developing new water resources in the Warren–Donnelly catchments in the south-west of Western Australia.

The Warren–Donnelly catchments have long been associated with intensive horticultural activities. The major perennial crops are pome fruit (apples and pears), avocados, stone fruit and wine grapes. The major annual crops are ware potatoes, seed potatoes, processing potatoes and brassica crops for the Perth Market over summer. There are emerging new industries including truffles, summer strawberry production, processing …

Song Of The Dzopa: A Case Study Of Traditional Farming, Food, And, Isabella Pezzulo

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

In a plane high above the snow-capped jagged peaks and cracked earth of Ladakh, I stared down below with awe, wondering how people ever coaxed life from the soil in this mountain-desert landscape. The intention of this study is to see how traditional subsistence farming actually takes place and the social settings formed by these practices. Living in the village of Tar for a little over twenty days allowed me to observe the age-old practices in which nourishment is produced and community formed through working the land. Working with my hands and resting with cups of butter tea alongside villagers …

Environmental Performance Of Local Versus Conventional Food Systems With A Focus On Fresh Vegetables Sold In The City Of Lincoln, Melanie Kieffer, Katie Harner Apr 2016

Environmental Performance Of Local Versus Conventional Food Systems With A Focus On Fresh Vegetables Sold In The City Of Lincoln, Melanie Kieffer, Katie Harner

UCARE: Research Products

This study examines the early stages to collect data on energy expenditure of fresh vegetables sold at Lincoln farmer’s markets in comparison to those sold at conventional grocery stores via lifecycle analysis. Results from the life cycle analysis would determine what the energy costs are for both local food markets and grocery retailers and how these energy costs may differ. This research is important as previous work has shown that the US food system is a significant contributor to fossil fuel combustion, accounting for about 15% of total energy use in the country. The ability to determine which market is …

Role Of Social Networks And Individual Endowments In Meeting Fundraising Targets: An Economic Experiment, Simanti Banerjee, Ursula Kreitmair, James Walker Mar 2016

Role Of Social Networks And Individual Endowments In Meeting Fundraising Targets: An Economic Experiment, Simanti Banerjee, Ursula Kreitmair, James Walker

Cornhusker Economics

Our study results indicate that success of fundraising out- comes depends both on the nature of social connections that determine the amount of information available about other’s giving behaviors as well as the endowments from which people make their donations. Thus, a key lesson from our study is that fundraising is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor. If funding organizations want to streamline their activities to achieve their targets at the lowest possible costs, they should be mindful of the donor demographic and the nature of community relations. At this point, we caution the reader about extrapolating the results of this controlled …

Addressing Rural Healthcare Disparities Using Behavioral Economic Insights, Jordyn Bader, Christopher Gustafson

Cornhusker Economics

Nonmetropolitan residents, those living outside central urbanized areas greater than 50,000 in population, are one of the largest medically underserved populations in the United States. Twenty percent of the U.S. population lives in nonmetropolitan areas, yet only nine percent of primary care providers are practicing in such areas (Rosenblatt and Hart 2000, 348). In addition to a geographic imbalance of healthcare practitioners, nonmetropolitan residents suffer from higher rates of chronic diseases and disability, report higher levels of obesity, are older on average, and are more likely to report being in fair or poor health than their metropolitan counterparts (Ricketts 2000, …

International trade is important for Nebraska and U.S. agriculture. Export sales account for about 27% of gross farm receipts in Nebraska, 32% for the United States as a whole. Consumers also benefit from agricultural trade which assures a steady supply of consumer goods ranging from tropical fruits to chocolate, coffee, and other goods that have become essential elements in consumer food baskets. Beginning in the 1990s, serious efforts to lower barriers to agricultural trade have been undertaken by parties to the World Trade Organization (WTO) as well as through regional trade agreements such as NAFTA. While substantial progress on agricultural …

2016 Trends In Nebraska Farmland Markets: Farming And Ranching On The Margin, Jim Jansen, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Agricultural commodity markets continued their decline in 2015 and 2016 as producers across Nebraska faced lower prices for crops and livestock. Lower values have resulted in tighter margins for servicing rent or debt payments. Preliminary findings from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Nebraska Farm Real Estate Market Survey 2016 indicate that as of February 1, 2016 the weighted average farmland value declined by about 4 percent over the prior 12-month period to $3,135 per acre (Figure 1 and Table 1). This decline marks the second consecutive year of lower weighted average farmland values in Nebraska.

Infection with Mycobacterium avium subspecies paratuberculosis (MAP) has been associated with reductions in milk production in dairy cows and sub optimal fertility. The aim of this study was to highlight the production losses associated with testing MAP ELISA positive in Irish dairy cows. Secondary objectives included investigation of risk factors associated with testing MAP ELISA positive. A survey of management practices on study farms was also conducted, with examination of associations between management practices and herd MAP status.

Blood samples were collected from 4188 breeding animals on 22 farms. Samples were ELISA tested using the ID Screen Paratuberculosis Indirect Screening …

2016 Nebraska Corn Production Net Income Risk, Cory Walters, Tina N. Barrett, Richard Preston

Cornhusker Economics

Nebraska corn producers are entering the production year with low grain prices, uncertainty associated with both harvest prices and yields and high production costs resulting in increased chances of financial losses than recently experienced. To help manage the risk of experiencing large financial losses, producers can purchase crop insurance which acts as a source of income when crop revenue turns out to be low. However, not all financial losses can be fully protected by crop insurance; therefore, producers are required to pick up the remainder in order to survive. The intent of this article is to provide guidance on financial …

The recent cases of human E. coli infections linked to Chipotle Mexican Grill in mid- October to November of 2015 brought the issue of food safety into the limelight. The outbreaks which were first detected in the Seattle Washington and Portland Oregon areas, were also reported in 7 other states, altogether leaving about 50 persons infected. Following a report about the outbreak by the Centers for Disease Control, Chipotle's sales for the last quarter of 2015 plunged by nearly 15% (Bloomberg News, Jan 6, 2016), adding to other costs incurred due to the outbreak such as medical expenses of the …

Cornhusker Economics

Development of glyphosate resistant transgenes started in the early 1980s and was commercially introduced in soybean varieties in 1996 as Roundup Ready?(hereafter referred to as RR1) (SourceWatch, 2012). Producers perceived that the more effective, easier, and less expensive weed control associated with these varieties outweighed the economic loss from lower yields (Gurian-Sherman, 2009). In 2008, the Roundup Ready 2 Yield varieties were commercialized as Genuity?Roundup Ready 2 Yield?(hereafter referred to as RR2Y) in 2010 (SourceWatch, 2012). RR2Y soybean varieties have been rapidly replacing the RR1 varieties in the marketplace.

Commodity Indices And Futures Markets, Fabio Mattos

Cornhusker Economics

The beginning of the year always brings news about commodity indices, particularly the annual changes in their composition. Actually, the rebalancing of several indices has been in the news for the last few months. Just to mention a couple of examples, on November 15, the Financial Times commented that "the impending reshuffle of the two main commodity benchmarks-the Standard and Poor's-Goldman Sachs Index (S&P GSCI) and Bloomberg Commodity Index (BCOM) - means that the futures contracts for livestock will see $780m worth of buying by fund managers, as both indices have increased the weightings of cattle and hogs." Buying Bulls By Value, Matthew C. Stockton, Roger K. Wilson

Cornhusker Economics

Choosing the right bull for your herd is a complex decision involving many factors including the type of person you are, the type of cows in your herd, and the type of calf you are marketing. If you are only interested in producing terminal market animals you would likely select a herd sire strictly for growth and carcass qualities. Whereas, if you sell weaned calves and keep your own replacement females, you may be more likely to focus on bulls with more maternal traits.

The Real Footprint Of Electric Vehicles, And What That Could Mean For Our Future, Krista Brown Jan 2016

The Real Footprint Of Electric Vehicles, And What That Could Mean For Our Future, Krista Brown

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper looks at the impact of electric vehicles on CO2 emissions specifically based on the type of electricity used in each New England state analyzed. The research looks at the question of whether or not emissions will in fact be lowered as electric cars start to take the majority of vehicles used instead of the conventional cars that take up a much larger percent of the motor vehicles used today. Taking into account the use of electricity and how many sources of electricity also release a substantial amount of emissions, we see how valid the public opinion of electric …

The Effect Of Information On Avoidance Behavior And Bicycle Transportation: A Study Of “Spare The Air” And Bay Area Bikeshare, Paige W. Whistler

Journal of Environmental and Resource Economics at Colby

This paper seeks to address the effect of “Spare the Air” pollution control alerts in the San Francisco Bay Area in California on the use of Bay Area BikeShare as a form of transportation. By observing the daily alerts on the duration of rides using BikeShare, this paper observes if STA ozone alerts are effective in changing human behavior. The results show that only as a subscriber to the BikeShare program and on an alert day does duration decrease whereas customers regardless of if it is an alert day will ride more often and at longer distances. The results contradict …
