Three Essays On Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Rakhe Balachandran Mar 2021

Three Essays On Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme, Rakhe Balachandran

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

India’s Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme (MGNREGs) is the largest public works program in the world with an objective to ensure rural livelihood security by generating employment through infrastructure projects. This thesis is comprised of three essays investigating the MGNREGs’ impact on rural communities and the labor market. The first essay examined the targeting accuracy of the program. I simultaneously controlled for the self-selection bias and endogeneity bias between poverty and program participation using an extended probit model. Using data from National Sample Survey (NSS) 2014, I find that households closer to the poverty line are more likely …

Sustainable Management Of Groundwater In Louisiana, Dependra Bhatta Nov 2020

Sustainable Management Of Groundwater In Louisiana, Dependra Bhatta

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The common property nature of the Mississippi River Alluvial Aquifer (MRAA) results in the formation of a cone of depression in the southern portion of the aquifer encompassing Concordia parish, Louisiana. Excessive groundwater withdrawal and the resulting cone of depression formation have caused some wells to go dry and others to be affected by saltwater intrusion. The depleting groundwater stock can be managed optimally using different groundwater management policies. The findings of this dissertation are relevant to both policymakers and researchers to understand the effects of policies to keep the aquifer sustainable.

My dissertation is written in a three-essay format. …

This research was conducted from 2017 to 2019 to evaluate the nutrient turnover of different species of cover crops in soils under different row crop production systems in Northeast and Central Louisiana. In Northeast Louisiana (Site 1, 2, and 3), treatments (cover crops and no cover crop) were arranged in a strip trial with three replications. At the Ben Hur Research Station, the treatments included three planting dates (September, October, and November) with [7 kg ha-1 of phosphorus (P) and potassium (K)] …

Rice Hull Bioreactor For Recirculating Aquaculture, Marlon A. Greensword Aug 2017

Rice Hull Bioreactor For Recirculating Aquaculture, Marlon A. Greensword

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The engineering of floating media biofilters has been optimized over the years. The backwashing process has made them more energy and water efficient. Likewise, moving bed bioreactors (MBBR) are gaining interest and popularity because they are relatively affordable to build. Yet, developing countries’ aquaculture production remains largely excluded from the advances made in recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS). This discrepancy is partially driven by the high costs of media such plastic beads and Kaldnes (KMT) media, commonly used in MBBR.

This dissertation evaluates the usability and profitability of rice hulls (RH), an abundant by-product in many developing nations, as a sinking …

Three Essays On Consumption Behavior, Credit, And Labor Supply Of Farm Households In Sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence From Uganda, Seydina Ousmane Sene Jan 2017

Three Essays On Consumption Behavior, Credit, And Labor Supply Of Farm Households In Sub-Saharan Africa: Evidence From Uganda, Seydina Ousmane Sene

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Consumption patterns, credit, and labor supply are determinants of human welfare, and also indicators of a country's economic progress, poverty, and inequalities. In this study, I review many of the stylized facts regarding consumption behaviors, credit, and the decision to engage in off-farm labor supply. I also put the life cycle model into an empirical model and perform testing. This is done in a three-essay format with a focus on the country of Uganda. In the first essay, I test whether farm households’ consumption behavior is consistent with an optimization process predicted by economic theory. In essay II, I evaluate …

The Vulnerability Of Louisiana To Hurricane Damage And The Value Of Wetlands For Hurricane Risk Reduction, James Luke Boutwell Jan 2016

The Vulnerability Of Louisiana To Hurricane Damage And The Value Of Wetlands For Hurricane Risk Reduction, James Luke Boutwell

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Coastal Louisiana is annually threatened by coastal storms. Population grown, wetland loss, and potentially increasing storm frequency are likely to increase coastal vulnerability to these events. Increasingly, coastal management entities are managing land resources to reduce the economic impact of natural disasters with the use of natural infrastructure. This is true in Louisiana where the Louisiana Coastal Master Plan allocates billions of dollars to coastal restoration projects, many of which are intended to mitigate economic damages from tropical storms and hurricanes. Despite this significant proposed investment, the risk reduction value provided by these projects is not well known. This analysis …

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang Jan 2016

Private Market Alternatives For Maintaining Wetland Viability In Coastal Louisiana: A Double-Hurdle Approach, Hua Wang

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The coastal zone of Louisiana contains more than three million wetland acres, or about 40 percent of the nation’s total. Since 1930, Louisiana has experienced a net loss of over 1,900 square miles of coastal wetlands. Currently at risk are the remaining coastal wetlands, 80 percent of which are under private ownership. The acceptance of private wetland owners to restoration programs and their participation in these programs are critical if future coastal restoration efforts are to be successful. Gaining the cooperation by the coastal landowners, however, is complicated by the fact that while the public benefits accruing from wetland protection …

The findings indicate that grass-fed beef producers generally preferred lower-priced, heavy animals that were small-to-medium framed and easy to handle for grass-finishing. Black animals that were retained from their own calves were preferred. Relative to intact males, steers and heifers were preferred. Except for the estimated parameter for the weight attribute, the standard deviations for the temperament, body frame, source, color, gender, and price attribute levels were significant at …

Agricultural Policy, Off-Farm Income, And Farmland Values: The Case Of South Korea, Hyunjeong Joo Jan 2015

Agricultural Policy, Off-Farm Income, And Farmland Values: The Case Of South Korea, Hyunjeong Joo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Farmland plays a dual role for farm business households; it can be both a production cost and an asset. As a production cost, farmland affects farm production decisions. As an asset, farmland comprises 80% of the total farm households’ assets. The total land available for farming is decreasing due to non-farming demand for land. The primary goal of this dissertation is to examine the impact of farm household income on farmland values. Specifically, I will assess the impact of off-farm income and government subsidies on farmland values in South Korean farm households. The majority of the studies on off-farm income, …

A choice-based experiment was used to assess consumer’s preferences for grass-fed beef. A national online survey was conducted in May 2012 and the information from 4000 respondents was collected from the entire U.S. The respondents were divided in two groups of similar size: grass-fed beef eaters, comprised by the respondents …

Evaluating Alternative Techniques For Forecasting Industrial And Occupational Employment, Drew A. Varnado Jan 2014

Evaluating Alternative Techniques For Forecasting Industrial And Occupational Employment, Drew A. Varnado

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This paper offers three different regional output-by-industry forecasting techniques (time series, Social Accounting Matrix (SAM)-based, and Computable General Equilibrium (CGE)-based) and two different occupation-by-industry matrices (national and state geographies) for use in the creation of industry/occupation employment forecasts. Estimates are compared to actual data from eight years from 2001 to 2010. OLS regressions are run to determine how well modeled employment estimates fit actual employment for the state of Louisiana. A meta-analysis style regression of the R-sqaured values on model characteristics (accounted for using Boolean dummy-variables) determines that industrial output forecasting techniques do not provide statistically different R-squared values, but …

A choice-based conjoint study was conducted to identify producer preferences for meat …

The Worlds Of Agriculture In Asia : Agricultural And Economic Development, Lorna Econg Amrinto Jan 2014

The Worlds Of Agriculture In Asia : Agricultural And Economic Development, Lorna Econg Amrinto

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The agro-fundamentalists consider agriculture as the engine of growth while agro-pessimists argue that economic growth causes agricultural productivity. It is the main engine of growth in agriculture-based countries; less important in transforming economies; and plays the same role as other tradable sectors in urbanized countries (World Bank, 2008). This work revisits agriculture’s role in the development process within the experience of Asia where the majority of the population heavily depends on agriculture. Chapter 2 presents the results of causality tests between agriculture and economic growth in bivariate systems using the TYDL methodology. For some of agriculture-based Asia (Bhutan, Lao, Cambodia …

Environmental Kuznets Curve In Water Pollution: A Semiparametric Approach, Mahesh Pandit Jan 2013

Environmental Kuznets Curve In Water Pollution: A Semiparametric Approach, Mahesh Pandit

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The relationship between pollution and per capita income generally appears as an inverted U-shaped curve. This inverted U-shaped curve is known as the environmental Kuznets curve (EKC). The shape of the curve, however, is very sensitive to the data, location and pollutant considered in the analysis. Since the early 1990s, there has been an exponential growth in the number of empirical studies in this field, but many refute the inverted U-shaped nature of the curve for pollutants across different time periods and geographical regions. This has generated an increased interest in developing a more flexible functional form for model specification …

A large array of literature has revealed the complexity of export performance analysis. Using the case of Ghana, this dissertation, divided into three essays, seeks to provide the methodological guidance, empirical and simulation evidence necessary to analyze a country’s export performance. The choice of Ghana was motivated by the country’s growth experience, strong export and agricultural sectors and implemented reforms and programs since 1983. In the first essay, we created a new trade-weighted Cedi index or real effective exchange rate (REER) that takes into account Ghana’s most relevant patterns of trade and captures the evolution of Ghana’s export price competitiveness …

The Effects Of U.S. Shrimp Imports On The Gulf Of Mexico Dockside Price : A Source Differentiated Mixed Demand Model, Maryam Tabarestani Jan 2013

The Effects Of U.S. Shrimp Imports On The Gulf Of Mexico Dockside Price : A Source Differentiated Mixed Demand Model, Maryam Tabarestani

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The ever increasing demand for the shrimp products in the 1980s and 1990s caused the volume of shrimp imports to increase. The import of shrimp has had an upward trend, from 847 million pounds in 1997 to 1,636 million pounds in 2010.The imports price has declined since 1997. Along with the decrease in imports price, the U.S. domestic shrimp price has also declined. However, the annual production of shrimp from the Gulf of Mexico has, in the long-run, remained relatively stable. These facts indicate that there is not the same quantity-price relation between the U.S. domestic shrimp market and shrimp …

Three Essays On Technology Adoption And The Roles Of Off-Farm Labor, Human Capital, And Risk In Contemporary Us Agriculture, Hiroki Uematsu

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Agriculture can be defined as the domestication and farming of plant and animal species to produce food and fiber products. Our society is fundamentally dependent on agriculture as it is the primary source of nutrients essential to human activities. Historically, the introduction of agriculture and technological development thereafter drastically changed the way human civilization has evolved into what it is today. New technologies allow farmers to produce more outputs with fewer inputs. Saved resources from agricultural production, such as land, labor and time, were used elsewhere to produce other goods and services that enrich the quality of our life. The …

Three Essays On The Efficiency Of Rural Hospitals In The United States, Iustin Cristian Nedelea Jan 2012

Three Essays On The Efficiency Of Rural Hospitals In The United States, Iustin Cristian Nedelea

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The Critical Access Hospital (CAH) Program was created in response to the dramatic deterioration of financial conditions and the potential threat of closure of small rural hospitals under the Prospective Payment System (PPS). CAHs receive cost-based reimbursement for services provided to Medicare patients in exchange for accepting a number of restrictions. The PPS, which pays a fixed price per case, provides an incentive for hospitals to reduce costs and increase efficiency. In the first essay, I examine the impact of conversion to CAH status on hospital efficiency. The estimated results show that CAHs are less cost and allocatively efficient than …
