Agricultural financial conditions and farm reorganization options have been analyzed extensively by agricultural economists, but analysis of actual reorganization bankruptcy filings has not been completed. This study contains analysis of 219 Chapter 11 farm filings in South Dakota from 1980-1985 and documents financially related characteristics of these producers and their secured. impaired and unsecured creditors. Discriminant analysis is used to examine the predictive value of initial filing data on eventual court disposition of farm Chapter 11 cases. Economists have long been interested in determinants of farmland prices. This interest has been heightened by large and contrasting changes in farmland market prices in the 1970's and 1980's. U.S. nominal farmland prices trended steadily upward from 1940-1972, soared upward 1972-1981 and have been declining since then. Percentage declines have been most severe in the Cornbelt and Northern Plains states (USDA, 1985). Two major econometric approaches (time series and cross-sectional models) have been and continue to be used by economists to analyze farmland price determining factors.

The descriptive research reported in this publication was part of a larger study carried out in South Dakota State University's Economics Department from 1978 through 1982 on rural industrial development in South Dakota. Factors influencing rural industrial development at the local level were reported in Goeken and Goeken and Dobbs. A Master of Science Research Paper in Sociology by Au Yeung drew and reported on some of the data contained in the present publication. The Sociology Research Paper also contained an examination of the effects of industrial development on local population changes in South Dakota.

This report is a result of the fuel alcohol research team's broadened focus during 1983. A comprehensive literature review was carried out to explore alternative starch and sugar crop alternatives for ethanol fuel production. Although the literature search was quite inclusive with respect to geographic regions, special emphasis was given to the agronomic and economic potential of various fuel alcohol crops in the Northern Plains region of the U.S., of which South Dakota is a part, and in LDCs of Asia, Africa, and Latin America. South Dakota is one of the top 10 hog production states with about 3 m111ion hogs and pigs marketed and 3.2 million hogs slaughtered in the state each year. This totals 3-4 percent of the nation's hog supply. South Dakota ranks twentieth in the nation in its irrigated acreage. Depending on how "irrigation" is defined, South Dakota has between 450,000 and 500,000 acres of irriqated land. About 375,000 acres has been developed under State-issued permits by private individuals and groups. An additional 66,450 acres comprise the Belle Fourche and Angostura Federal Irrigation Projects, although in any one year not all of this land is necessarily irrigated. About 52,300 acres of "dry draw, spreader" irrigation involves the intermittent backing up of water behind dams in small creeks for occasional irrigations by farmers and ranchers in the West River Region. …

The economics of dryland versus irrigated crop production in two of South Dakota's ·fast-irrigation-growth counties -- Brookings and Turner are examined in this paper. Special attention is given to the economic impacts on the farm economy of rising energy prices and high interest rates. Irrigation development has been and will continue to be a key issue facing the people of the state of South Dakota. As irrigated acreage increases, benefits accrue throughout the State. The irrigator's income earning potential is expanded and income variability is reduced as drought impacts on yields are ameliorated. In addition, a more stable, larger quantity of feed can be produced for livestock production. This may allm-1 for expansion in the livestock industry or less importation of feedstuffs into an area. Four local cooperatives have agreed to purchase the elevator at Wentworth, South Dakota, and form a federated cooperative at Wentworth. The Wentworth facility consists of two separate elevators. The main elevator is located on the former Milwaukee Road branchline from Sioux Falls Junction to Madison. The elevator and two annexes have a capacity of approximately 120,000 bushels. A warehouse and frame quonset add approximately 150,000 bushels of storage capacity. A separate office building and truck scale are at the site. This study has demonstrated the feasibility of using microcomputers on the farm or in the home to solve problems involving manipulation of large quantities of data or detailed mathematical procedures. A microcomputer with at least 32,000 words of memory and magnetic disk storage is recommended for efficient data processing. This capacity is required for programs of the type presented in this publication. A printer with at least an 80 character line is an essential feature. Periodic shortages of rail equipment have freqnetly imposed marketing problems and costs upon the grain industry. For exumple, one study estimated the total cost due to the lack of transportation equipment was $2.36 million dollars for Iowa elevators in 1969. In spite of efforts to resolve the equipment problem through the private sector, these costs have persisted and led to attempts to seek relief through government intervention. During the 1980 legislative session, the South Dakota Governor suggested a new approach; the purchase of rail cars by the State to supplement railroad and elevator fleets. The purpose of this study is to figure the fixed costs of constructing and equipping a 500, 1,000 or 10,000 cattle feedlot given certain assumptions and restrictions, and to analyze those costs in terms of economic efficiency. The fixed costs are divided into six areas of analysis: the equipment of the feedlot, the pole buildings, the concrete flooring for the pole buildings, the feedlot building materials, the feedlot storage equipment and the waste disposal.
