An Economic Analysis Of The Effects Of Alternative Shearing Methods On Wool Quality In Eastern South Dakota, Gerald E. Marousek

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The lack of information relating the quality of the wool clip at the farm to its value to the manufacturer has been recognized for several years. The following objectives were set out as a means of guiding the study of wool quality improvement in eastern South Dakota: To determine the theoretical effects of improved methods of shearing and handling wool on quantities produced, prices received, apportionment of benefits between producers and consumers, farm resource allocation, producers' bargaining power, and marketing costs; to develop and test practical methods of farm preparation of fleeces which could be expected to improve the quality …

Projecting Brookings Growth From College Enrollment Estimates, Norma Ruth Koch

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This study attempts to make a projection of population and commercial activity in the City of Brookings, based upon a prior projection of enrollment at South Dakota State College. In order to determine the material benefits which Brookings will derive from the location of South Dakota State College in the community, an estimate of the business expansion which will follow the anticipated increase in enrollment and employment at the college by 1970 is necessary. The objective of this study is to estimate the anticipated commercial expansion.

Opportunities And Problems Of Using United States Surplus Food To Increase Capital Formation In Underveloped Countries, Ali Ahmed Attiga Aug 1959

Opportunities And Problems Of Using United States Surplus Food To Increase Capital Formation In Underveloped Countries, Ali Ahmed Attiga

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This study is an elaboration of the thesis that, under certain conditions and assumptions regarding the economies of underdeveloped countries, surplus food could provide a valuable and unique form of additional funds for accelerating capital formation in these countries. The central ideas of this thesis, including the conditions and assumptions which underlie their validity and some of their practical implications are examined in Chapter II. Chapter I consists of some background in formation on present inequality of wealth between the advanced and the less developed countries of the world and the economic and political implications of such inequality. Part of …

A Search For Rules For International Wheat Surplus Disposal, James L. Leibfried Aug 1959

A Search For Rules For International Wheat Surplus Disposal, James L. Leibfried

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Before a cooperative plan can be formulated for utilizing the wheat surpluses in underdeveloped countries, there are three points on which the exporting nations will have to agree. They are: (1) uniform terms (rates of interest and repayment, and etc.) for concessional sales; (2) the level of commercial wheat imports, if any, that the underdeveloped countries should be required to maintain; and (3) a basis for determining the quantity of wheat each exporting nation should supply on concessional terms. The general purpose of this study was to attempt to establish a basic rule for determining the level of commercial wheat …

Grain Merchandising At The Country Elevator, Arthur B. Sogn Aug 1959

Grain Merchandising At The Country Elevator, Arthur B. Sogn

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The general public including the patrons has little knowledge of the internal operations of country elevators. This is due in part to the lack of adequate communication between the operator and his customers or patrons. In consequence the patrons too often fail to understand why a certain price for their grain is offered or why certain charges are made for services rendered. The farmer expects and is entitled to a ready market for his grains. The farmer may elect to sell his grain immediately at the current price, store it with the idea of obtaining a better price later, or …

Economic Opportunities Available To Farmers On 160-Acre Farms In Southeastern South Dakota, Leonard R. Benning Jul 1959

Economic Opportunities Available To Farmers On 160-Acre Farms In Southeastern South Dakota, Leonard R. Benning

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

How can farm income be increased on 160-acre farms in south-eastern South Dakota? This question has been asked by many farmers who are trying to determine the most profitable cropping and livestock systems. The most profitable farm organization depends on how well the farmer selects his farm enterprises and combines the use of his land, labor, capital, and management. The major problem of the farm manager is selecting the enterprises in combination with available resources that will result in the greatest continuous earnings over a period of years. There is no one combination of cropping and livestock system which is …

The purpose of this project is to obtain data on costs, returns and organization on farms and ranches in all …

Seasonal Variations Of Soil Moisture In South Dakota, Ray F. Pengra Feb 1959

Seasonal Variations Of Soil Moisture In South Dakota, Ray F. Pengra

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The purpose of this study was to estimate the average daily soil moisture in the various areas of South Dakota. Estimates of such soil moisture are presented in graphic form for locations represented by 25 U. S. Weather Bureau Stations in South Dakota. Estimates of the average soil moisture available may be of use in planning irrigation projects for large areas or for individual farms. The method used here in calculating the soil moisture for the past may prove to be a practical means by which farmers can determine when and how often to irrigate during the crop year. Further …

Acreage Reserve Participation In South Dakota Wheat Areas, Allan M. Severson Dec 1958

Acreage Reserve Participation In South Dakota Wheat Areas, Allan M. Severson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The Agricultural Act of 1956, which contains the Soil Bank Act, was enacted in the spring of 1956. The soil bank program is divided into two phases, the acreage reserve and the conservation reserve. The acreage reserve is available to farmers with acreage allotments for the basic commodities, which are wheat and corn in South Dakota. The farmer takes part in the acreage reserve program by signing a one-year agreement with his Agricultural Stabilization and Conservation Committee (hereafter referred to as the ASC Committee) and reducing his acreage below the assigned allotment on his farm. In return for taking the …

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile Sep 1958

Climatic Variations In South Dakota 1900 - 1950, Robert M. Basile

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Most of South Dakota lies within the Great Plains of the United States. Thus, the climate of South Dakota, like that of the Great Plains, has been one of relatively little precipitation and frequent droughts. However, periods of rather high rainfall have led to considerable optimism. Likewise droughts like those of the 1930's may have led to too much pessimism. What is the real picture of the variability of South Dakota climate? The purpose of this pamphlet is to help answer this question. No one knows with certainty what will happen in the future. The best indication of what can …

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl Sep 1958

Marketing Northern Alfalfa Seed: A Progress Report, Dale C. Dahl

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Alfalfa seed has become a farm crop of increasing importance. Total hay acreage in the United States has remained practically unchanged during the past two decades, but alfalfa hay, during this period, has increased by over 100 percent. Accompanying this increased acreage in alfalfa hay, total alfalfa seed production for the United States has nearly tripled. In turn, the incomes of farmers engaged in alfalfa seed production have multiplied approximately three times during the past twenty years. Alfalfa seed is not a homogeneous product. For many years it has been agronomically grouped into "hardy" and "non-hardy" alfalfa seed. The term …

Agricultural Drought In South Dakota: How Many Droughty Days Per Season?, Ray F. Pengra Jul 1958

Agricultural Drought In South Dakota: How Many Droughty Days Per Season?, Ray F. Pengra

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The purpose of this study was to determine the likelihood of different numbers of drought days per season in ten selected areas of South Dakota using weather data accumulated by the Weather Bureau. Information on the likelihood of drought within the Great Plains is of primary importance for any type of farming. For the prospective irrigation area in central South Dakota such information is essential to determine the extent of irrigation needed and the type of irrigation that will be best adapted to the needs of the area.

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale Jul 1958

Economic And Legal Aspects Of Vertical Integration, Dale C. Dale

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

Vertical integration, on the other hand, is the grouping of two or more complementary firms on different levels of the production-marketing process. For example, a processor and a farmer may unite or a supplier, farmer, processor and wholesaler may combine under centralized management. The key idea is the extent of control that can be exercised by the central decision maker or "integrator," It is important to understand that vertical integration is concerned only with single enterprises or single commodities at the present time. A multi-enterprise farmer may integrate only part of his farming operation. A farmer who deals in wheat, …

Farm Price Programs, Kenneth L. Robinson Oct 1957

Farm Price Programs, Kenneth L. Robinson

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

This publication should be useful to farmers and others who want to review the road that agricultural price policy in the United States has traveled in the past and to appraise the effect of such policies. It will also be useful to a person planning and taking part in discussions of farm price policy and programs at meetings of farmers and others interested in American agriculture. In a democracy, farmers and agricultural leaders may expect to be called upon more and more to express their views concerning matters of agricultural policy and national farm programs. The discussion is divided into …

Prices And Costs For Use In Farm And Ranch Planning, Russell L. Berry Oct 1957

Prices And Costs For Use In Farm And Ranch Planning, Russell L. Berry

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The prices of most things farmers and ranchers produce will vary widely in future years as they have in the past. It is not possible to reorganize a farm or ranch every time there is a variation in prices. The benefits of a given crop rotation can only be secured after several years. When crop rotations are changed fields and fences may also need to be changed. Buildings may need to be built or remodeled to handle the new crops. Livestock enterprises should be chosen with regard to the crops produced. Since many years are often required to establish profitable …

Weather In The Making, Ray F. Pengra

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

The objective of this pamphlet is to present some of the basic atmospheric phenomena that are related to weather. It is hoped that this will give research workers and others interested a general idea of how weather develops in the atmosphere and make possible a more realistic application of available weather data to agricultural research. Data and illustrations from "The Pilot's Weather Handbook" and the 1955 "Yearbook of Agriculture", as well as other government publications, are presented to provide an application of weather factors to agriculture and its problems.

Average temperatures are presented graphically by weeks in order to emphasize the changes in temperatures from north to south over the state. Since farming operations, to be efficient, must be planned to take into consideration probable local conditions of weather and length of the season this should be useful in helping the farmers plan their farming program as well as do scientists in developing farm crops best adapted to each locality of the state. The climatological year has been considered as from March 1 through February 28 or 29 of the following calendar year in order to present data for …

Strengthening Farms And Ranches In South Dakota: A Preliminary Report Prepared For The South Dakota Legislative Research Council, Pierre, South Dakota, Russell L. Berry

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)

There is much concern over the future of agriculture. Farm and ranch incomes have been falling as a result of the decline in farm produce prices since 1951 and continued h:gh costs of machinery and other means of production. Because of these factors and the capacity of modern machinery, farmers and ranchers have been increasing the size of their operating units. As farms and ranches increased in size, rural population has been decreasing. This decline in rural population has had serious effects upon the rural community and rural life. Schools, churches and local government units are seriously affected in areas …
