Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
The importance of an adequate supply of fruit in the diet has been stressed in recent years. Nutrition and production specialists have long believed that both the production and consumption of fruit have be too low in South Dakota. Climatic and transportation problem in South Dakota, often make it difficult for some families, particularly in the western part of the state, to grow or purchase adequate supplies of fruit throughout the year. The lack of information on the quantities of fruit produced and consumed in South Dakota prompted the State Nutrition Committee to make a state wide study during 1944. …

Agricultural Experiment Station Agricultural Economics Pamphlets (1941-1991)
This is a graphic presentation of crop and livestock changes which have occurred in South Dakota during the period, 1924-44. The study of changes which have come about during the past twenty years should be a useful guide in planning adjustments for the transition and post-war periods. Drought conditions accompanied by low prices during the "thirties" disrupted the crop and livestock pattern. More favorable conditions in recent years have brought about a fuller use of agricultural production facilities in the state. The present war-time level of crop and livestock production will need to be adjusted to new demand conditions. These …

ncreasing demands for meat, milk, fats, cereals, and oils make it essential that South Dakota farmers adjust their individual programs to achieve maximum production. This increased production may be brought about by a fuller utilization of crop land and land otherwise left idle, by shifting from low to high nutrient production crops, by adjusting livestock feeding practices for a more efficient use of feed and by the adoption of other improved farm management practices.

Unlike producers of branded products, farmers have been unable individually to control market prices through control of production. Since individual farmers have found that, in general, prices have been determined by forces beyond their control they have attempted to increase …
