Nexus Between Rural Agricultural Land Ownership And Agricultural Credits Access: A Case Of Tanzania, Gelas Rubakula Dec 2024

Nexus Between Rural Agricultural Land Ownership And Agricultural Credits Access: A Case Of Tanzania, Gelas Rubakula

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Agricultural investment in low- and middle-income countries faces credit access challenges. Several financial institutions, particularly banks, normally impose some conditions where the possession of a land title deed is required to access agricultural credits. This paper examines whether, and to what extent, rural agricultural land ownership influences agricultural credit access for rural farmers in Tanzania. The study focuses only on rural farmers and tries to find out whether these smallholder farmers can use their land, which is largely unformalized, as a collateral for credit access. The study survey was cross-sectional, using quantitative data collected in December 2017 to March 2018 …

The Indigenization Of Tobacco Farming And Its Challenges In Iringa District: 1960s–1980s, Emmanuel Kihongo Jun 2024

The Indigenization Of Tobacco Farming And Its Challenges In Iringa District: 1960s–1980s, Emmanuel Kihongo

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

This paper is about the politics of indigenizing tobacco farming and the challenges associated with it during the post-colonial era. It examines the initiatives of government in facilitating the process, and how the bodies entrusted to ensure its implementation failed to achieve the intended goal. Tobacco farming in Africa and Tanzania has a complex history. Since this crop is essentially labour- and capital intensive, its beginning in colonial Tanganyika, and Iringa in particular, was dominated by settler farmers. The paper progressively narrates this history, especially on how it became a popular crop among indigenous smallholders in Iringa from 1961. It …

Profit Efficiency And Smallholder Sugarcane Out-Growers Under Contract Farming In Tanzania: Does Location Matter?, Thobias Nsindagi, Jennifer K. Sesabo

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

Tanzania is among countries that value the sugarcane sector as one of the potential crops for poverty alleviation. The sector provides direct employment to about 14,000 people, and it is an outlet for the produce of over 30,000 farming households (Nkonya & Barreiro Hurle, 2012). Likewise, it provides direct earnings and savings amounting to about US$28m annually (Sugar Board of Tanzania (SBT), 2007). However, sugarcane out-growers in Tanzania have been getting low prices relative to unit costs (Matango, 2006). This has generated substantial debate about the need and level of government support. Like other developing countries, contract farming (CF) has …

Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences

The current economic and marketing reforms in Tanzania have not led to expected improvement in the productivity, incomes and overall livelihoods of coffee growers. Consequently, farmer’s cooperatives have been unable to satisfactorily provide the essential services to their members. This paper analyses the impact of market liberalisation to members of cooperatives. Data was collected by household surveys, FGD and interviews, whereby structured questionnaires and checklists were employed. The study found out that following market liberalisation, Agricultural Marketing Cooperative Societies (AMCOS) are disorganised and lack strong management. There is no substantial welfare improvement to AMCOS members due to the unpredictable pricing …
