EACH year much of the premium wheat received by millers is inferior in quality to the samples on which the premium bids are based. This often leads to reduction in the premium paid.
Cereal Products Adviser J. Parish, B.Sc. (Agric), describes how samples can overestimate the quality of a crop and suggests methods of taking samples which will give a true estimate of crop quality.

DEEP sowing appears to be an important cause of poor emergence in wheat and care should be taken to seed at the recommended depth of 1 to 1J inches.
Nevertheless some growers in drought liable areas, persist in sowing at 2 to 3 inches in the belief that it will encourage a deep root system.

Trials with a new chemical suggest that economical control of wild oats in wheat is only possible in heavily infested crops.

The use of fungicides, either as seed or soil dressings, for the control of root rotting diseases of wheat, was examined in a series of field experiments.
Results suggest that seed dressings have no effect on the incidence of root rotting fungi in the mature crop.
When fungicides were applied to the soil, a reduction in the incidence of take-all was noted in one experiment, but the same treatments had toxic effects on plants in a second similar experiment.

The material in this report will be confined chiefly to studies on crop production with stubble-mulching compared with plowing. Major cash crops have been studied in different rotations including legumes and non-legume crops. In all tests, plowing has been compared with subsurface tillage. Different types of equipment have been devised and tested for the various operations during the course of these studies.

Although Federal grain standards for Hard Red Winter Wheat were revised in 1957, a Nebraska Experiment Station study shows that the new regulations had very little effect on grades received by wheat marketed at country points by Nebraska farmers in 1957. This bulletin reports the results of studies on the epidemiology of wheat streak mosaic under Nebraska conditions. Particular attention is given to the occurrence and certain characteristics of the mite vector of the virus, the relation of weather and other factors to some of its activities, a correlation of certain mite situations with epidemics of the disease, and recommendations for disease control.

Each year cereal variety trials are conducted on the wheatbelt research stations with the object of determining the most suitable varieties which can be recommended for planting under Western Australian conditions. The location of the five wheatbelt research stations is such that the results obtained from trials on these stations present a reasonably overall picture for the wheatbelt and the farmer is able, by comparison with his own soil and climatic conditions, to translate the results for himself.

Wheat is one of the major crops of Utah and for more than 50 years farmers have been raising wheat on the dry lands of the state. The system they use is known as the alternate cropping or crop-follow system and consists of one year of crop alternating with one year of clean cultivation known as fallow.
Wheat removes a considerable amount of the natural plant food elements from the soil each year. This is especially true of nitrogen. According to Bracken and Greaves (9) the original low supply of nitrogen in most Utah soils together with the depleting effects …

The Utilization Of Food Elements By Growing Chicks. Xi. A Comparison Of Ground Wheat And Ground Rye In Rations For Growing Chicks, C. W. Ackerson, W. E. Ham, F. E. Mussehl

1. The effect of replacing the shorts and bran of a standard ration by ground wheat or ground rye was studied with two lots of newly hatched chicks. 2. Comparisons were made on the basis of equal intakes of dry matter and nitrogen by all chicks. 3. The wheat-fed lot made a significantly greater gain than the rye-fed lot. 4. Several cases of curled-toe paralysis occurred in the two lots, and a tendency to cannibalism appeared in the rye-fed lot.

The purpose of this bulletin is to present the data on nitrate contents and nitrate production in tests where straw or stalk residues were left on the surface through subsurface tillage, as compared with check treatments where these residues were plowed under or were absent. Nine of these tests were at Lincoln, Nebraska, and one was at the Hastings, Nebraska, Hydrological Project. Two tests were conducted in 1939, four in 1941, and four in 1942.

This preliminary experiment does not answer all of the questions that are presented about manganese and iodine requirements. It can only be taken to indicate that for a typical situation with a typical ration of the type that many poultry producers use, there was no satisfactory evidence that egg production, hatchability and the viability of the hens was limited by manganese and iodine in the ration.

Considerable work has been done by plant breeders and investigators in the study of individual plant characters, but only a few have attempted to work out correlations between characters in crop plants. One reason for this seems to be, that many investigators have felt that correlation studies were of very little practical value. This attitude was due perhaps to the interpretation given correlation data, especially the nature of the casual agency or agencies to which the correlation was attributed. Most of our plant breeders however, have been too busy working on experiments with single characters and have given little or …

More profitable wheat production, rather than greater total production in Nebraska, is the object of this circular. The grower who has the largest acreage of wheat does not necessarily make the greatest profit. High yields per acre usually means a lower cost and a great profit per bushel. Wheat of high quality brings additional profits. High yield and quality are usually the combined result of good seed, disease prevention, crop rotations, a well-prepared seed bed, the proper time of seeding, and reasonable care in harvesting, threshing and storing.

Erikss. and Henn. overwinter under the environmental conditions prevailing at Lincoln, Nebraska, a series of experiments was carried out extending over a period of 5 years. The results of this investigation are briefly presented. V. By the period of initial infection is meant the time required by a pathogen after it reaches a susceptible plant part to enter the tissues. 1. The influence of relative humidity and temperature on the viability of the urediniospores of two Physiologic Forms of Puccinia graminis tritici has been determined. 2. The same general relation between the viability of the urediniospores and the relative humidity and temperature was found, namely, that the lower the temperature the longer the spores retained their viability at all relative humidities, while at any stated temperature the spores were viable the longest at the medium humidities. 3. Stakman and Levine have shown that Puccinia graminis tritici (Pers.) Erikss. and Henn. consists of a number of biologic forms, which can be determined by their action on different varieties of Triticum species. To date 37 such biologic forms have been identified by them through the parasitic action on 12 differential hosts chosen from a large number of varieties of Triticum species. To determine whether these biologic forms remain constant in their behavior under various environmental conditions, a detailed study of the host-parasite relation was undertaken with 2 of these forms. The last three crops of winter wheat, and especially the crop of 1922-23, have been seriously injured in southwestern Nebraska and especially on the dry land farms of Cheyenne, Kimball, Banner, Morrill, Garden, Deuel , Keith, Perkins, and Hitchcock Counties, by an abundance of hard-bodied, cylindrical, shining waxy yellow, soil-infesting larvae. These greatly resemble wireworms and are often mistaken for them, but they differ conspicuously in being more active and having well-developed, club-shaped antennae, long and stout front legs, and a less flattened body with a distinctly upturned tip. No exact data are at hand regarding the influence of temperature and relative humidity on the viability of the urediniospores of stem rust under controlled conditions. 1. The influence of relative humidity on the viability of the urediniospores of Puccinia graminis tritici Form III is very pronounced and closely associated with temperature. 2. At high relative humidities, depending somewhat on the temperature, the percentage of germination is low and the period over which the spores are viable is very short. 3. It is apparent that many sources of error have unconsciously entered into comparative crop yield tests. The very important matter of overcoming variation in soil conditions as a source of experimental error has been quite extensively studied and reported by various investigators during the past decade. The means suggested for reducing such error have been (1) repetition of plats and (2) correction of yields according to check plats planted to a uniform variety or treatment at stated intervals.
