This report documents a site visit to evaluate aspen stands experiencing oystershell scale damage on the Kaibab and Coconino National Forest’s. The site visit was requested by Kaibab NF, foresters including; Josh Giles, Jessi Outzs, Michael Sedgeman, Woody Rokala and Coconino Silviculturist, Mark Nabel. On November 19, 2016, Amanda Grady accompanied the individuals listed above, to evaluate stand conditions within three aspen exclosures. The 2008 food crisis prompted many food importing nations to reconsider the need to be self-sufficient especially in their staple food needs. This awakening led to the launch of the Coalition for Africa Rice Development (CARD) initiative with a goal to double rice production in Africa. Under the CARD umbrella member countries drafted individual National Rice Development Strategies (NRDS). This study is a quantitative assessment of four East African countries’ NRDS: Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Uganda within dynamic global rice economy models. The two articles in this thesis used content analysis to analyze and compare animal welfare related website and Twitter content of the top five animal protein producing companies in the United States. In the first article, the animal welfare website content of Cargill, Tyson Foods Inc., Smithfield, JBS® and Sysco were analyzed for persuasive frames, common topics, and key terminology to describe their corporate positions on animal welfare. Sysco’s main page devoted to animal welfare dominated the word count with 1,045 words, while JBS®’s main animal welfare page used only 265 words to communicate the company’s views. The Women’s Land Army brought together rural and urban sectors of the United States in a climate of national and regional crisis. By the time the country was cast into war, the agricultural sector was already caught in a downward economic spiral that drove away laborers. With demand falling, and farms propped up only by experiments in subsidy and parity, when military and industrial jobs emerged in urban areas, farm laborers became scarce. Grapevines (cv Zinfandel) planted in the same vineyard 100 years apart were analyzed for juice chemistry and phenolic content of the fruit. The vineyard was dry farmed, and vines from the original 1890 vineyard were compared to vines inter-planted in 1990. As “old vine” wines can command higher prices in the market due to a perceived difference in fruit characteristics. This study attempted to observe if there was a measurable difference in fruit characteristics, or if it is simply an effective marketing strategy. Shiga Toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are adulterants in ground beef. Antimicrobial interventions reduce STEC, but effectiveness may depend on application time and the impact on ground beef quality.

Objectives were to evaluate reductions in rifampicin-resistant E. coli (E. coli^RIF) on beef clod surfaces, and the effect on ground beef quality. Beef clods were sectioned and dipped in 4.5% lactic acid (LA) or 380 ppm peroxyacetic acid (PA) for 15 or 180 s. E. coli^RIF were inoculated (~5.3 log CFU/cm2) onto fat or lean tissue surfaces. Four experiments were conducted to determine the impact of development systems, trace mineral source, and trace mineral supplementation on beef heifers. Experiment 1 utilized 300 Angus-based, spring-born heifers to evaluate postweaning heifer development systems on gain, reproductive performance, and feed efficiency as a pregnant heifer. Heifers were blocked by BW and randomly assigned to graze corn residue, upland range, or were fed 1 of 2 diets in a drylot differing in energy levels: high or low. Heifer development system did not impact AI or final pregnancy rates. Development cost per pregnant heifer was not different among treatments. Furthermore, pregnant heifer …

This need has led to the introduction of technologies that can be devastating to conventional rice crops. In order to clarify the role of lactic acid bacteria and yeast in the yak yogurt quality formation, by using the yak milk powder as the raw material, the yak yogurt as the fermentation agent, and inhibiting the yeast and lactic acid bacteria in fermention, respectivly, the indexes, for the flavor, taste and texture, were determined, and compared in the ordinary fermentation, inhibition of lactic acid bacteria, inhibition of yeast fermentation yogurt. Interactions between Streptococcus salivarius and Streptococcus mutans play important roles in the development of dental biolms in oral cavity. S. salivarius BD3900, isolated from the oral cavity of a healthy voluteer, displayed the potential to be an oral probiotics in vitro. Strong hydrophobicity (95.8%) and high surface charges(≥88.6%) endure the strain to be easily adhered in oral cavity. The strain BD3900 was tolerant to 100 μg/mL lysozyme(2.0×104 U/mg), indicating the high ability for the strain to survive in oral cavity. Besides, the strain was determined to be with high auto-aggregating ability(15%～20%) as well as co-aggregating abiltity with Streptococcus mutans.in the …
