The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture received a grant from the National Research Initiative (NRI), CSREES USDA. The purpose was to help small- and medium-sized farmers and entrepreneurs enhance the viability of their farms through the establishment of vineyards, on-farm wineries, and production of value-added products from grapes and grape by-products. All Current Publications

This report summarizes on-farm performance of irrigated silage corn hybrids at Benson (Cache County) in 2006. The site is at 4439 ft elevation and has a long-term average of 2800 corn growing degree days (50/86° F) per year. Hybrids were seeded with a six-row planter on May 10 at approximately 35,000 seeds/ac into Kidman fine sandy loam. Plots were six rows wide at 30-in row spacing by 1070 ft long in three randomized complete blocks.

One-Time Tillage Of No-Till: Effects On Nutrients, Mycorrhizae, And Phosphorus Uptake, J. P. Garcia, Charles S. Wortmann, Martha Mamo, Rhae A. Drijber, David D. Tarkalson

Stratification of nutrient availability, especially of P, that develops with continuous no-till (NT) can affect runoff nutrient concentration and possibly nutrient uptake. The effects of composted manure application and one-time tillage of NT on the distribution of soil chemical properties, root colonization by arbuscular mycorrhizae (AM), and plant P uptake were determined. Research was conducted on Typic Argiudoll and Moffic Hapludaff soils under rainfed corn (Zea mays L.) or sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench.] rotated with soybean [Glycine max (L.) Men.] in eastern Nebraska. Tillage treatments included NT, disk, chisel, moldboard plow (MP), and mini-moldboard plow (MMP). …

272 Agricultural land values and cash rental rates in South Dakota, by region and by state, are the primary topics of this report. Target audiences are farmers and ranchers, landowners, agricultural professionals (lenders, rural appraisers, professional farm managers), and policy makers interested in agricultural land market trends. This report contains the results of the 2007 SDSU South Dakota Farm Real Estate Market Survey, the 17th annual SDSU survey developed to estimate agricultural land values and cash rental rates by land use in different regions of South Dakota.

The Horry County South Carolina Solid Waste Authority wanted to create a space that could serve the duties of the landfill and as an environmental education and recreation facility on a tract of land they own. Several areas of minimal ecological importance are used as sorting facilities for storm debris and cap dirt excavation areas for use on the active landfill. The remainder of the tract is planned for the development of an environmental education, nature-based tourism, and outdoor recreation center. During the Spring and Fall of 2006, a study was conducted at the Agricultural Research and Education Complex of Western Kentucky University to monitor the effects of poultry litter application on soil bulk density. A randomized split block design was used for this study. The soil was a Crider silt loam (Typic Paleudalf). Poultry litter treatments were compared with inorganic fertilizers. The same basic fertility treatments were applied in this study from 2001-2006. Those treatments consisted of poultry litter applied at the nitrogen rate (NPL), poultry litter applied at the phosphorus rate only (PPL), poultry litter applied at the phosphorus …

Finding aid only for Manuscripts Small Collection 1490. Letter written in 1839 by Fox & Still of Dover, Kentucky, in Mason County, to Mr. Adam Beatty in Frankfort regarding sericulture in Kentucky. Beatty wrote extensively about Kentucky agriculture. The letter discusses the processes involved in sericulture and particularly the feeding of silkworms.

Poultry production throughout Southern Kentucky is becoming a major agricultural enterprise. Rapid spread of the industry has led to many agricultural advances as well as concerns. One primary concerns is the possible nutrient build-up in pasture and cropland as a result of broiler litter application. Studies were conducted at Western Kentucky University using sorghum sudangrass (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) as a forage to possibly remove excess nutrients. This project led to a consideration of using a cover crop to further remove nutrients from broiler litter amended soils. Agricultural Contaminant Source And Transport In A Karst Groundwater Basin, Patricia Kambesis

Agricultural land use in areas that are located in karst groundwater basins negatively impact groundwater quality because karst terrains provide multiple, direct hydrologic connections from the surface into karst aquifers. The connections and rapid velocities associated with surface and subsurface flow in karst aquifers allow for contaminants to move quickly into and through a groundwater basin. When groundwater returns to the surface via a spring or springs, any contaminants within the water become part of surface streams and rivers. These in turn, impact water quality in areas located downstream of the spring or springs. The purpose of this study was …
