Developing forest management plans for sustaining the full range of forest values is a challenging task. One of the difficulties in this process is to set and achieve management objectives, and conservation targets. A sustainable forest management concept requires that a target forest structure (the composition and the configuration) be set before developing alternative management actions for the achievement of management objectives and the conservation targets. Field experiments were carried out at the Agricultural Research Station, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Tabriz, in 2004-2005 and 2005-2006. Three winter oilseed rape cultivars (Okapi, Licord, and SLM046) with 12 weed interference durations were evaluated in a factorial experiment based on a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The experiments consisted of 2 sets of treatments. In the first set, the crop was kept weed-free until the growth stages of 4-leaf, 8-leaf, stem elongation, flowering, and podding. Soil-borne plant pathogenic fungi cause heavy crop losses all over the world. With variable climate from region to region, most crops grown in India are susceptible to diseases caused by soil-borne fungal pathogens. Among tropical and subtropical land crops, groundnut (Arachis hypogaea L.) is an important oil seed crop, providing vegetable oil as human food and oil cake meal as animal poultry feed. A large number of diseases attack groundnut plants in India; of these, stem rot (collar rot) caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is the most common disease. The predictive power of a hyperspectral imagery for estimating woody and herbaceous biomass were examined for a big sagebrush (Artemisia tridentata) dominated area in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, United States of America. The normalized difference vegetation (NDV) and structure insensitive pigment (SIP) indices were used to investigate the relationships between biomass components and reflectance spectra. Ground data were collected in 13 sample plots 1 m^2 in size by clipping all herbaceous vegetation to ground level and stripping green leaves from big sagebrush plants. Strong relationships (R^2 from 0.83 to 0.96) were found between the hyperspectral data and biomass components. The …

The study was carried out to determine the adaptation potential of sweet potato crops to different regions of Turkey. The study included 9 introduced genotypes of diverse origin and 2 local genotypes that were tested in 4 locations (Diyarbakır and Şanlıurfa representing the southeastern Anatolia region, and Adana and Hatay representing the Mediterranean region) in 2000 and 2001. Haulm and storage root growth of the cultivars were monitored at monthly intervals. Total and graded storage root yield, and some quality parameters were determined at the final harvest. Genetic Variation Among Cotton (Gossypium Hirsutum L.) Cultivars For Seed-Set Efficiency, Yüksel Bölek, Mustafa Oğlakçi

Seed-set efficiency (SSE) is one of the most important within-boll yield components in cotton production. Increased SSE can lead to increased seed number and, ultimately, to greater fiber yield. A field experiment was conducted during 2003-2004 to compare cotton cultivars (Gossypium hirsutum L.), in terms of the potential for improved SSE, in a Mediterranean region (Kahramanmaraş Agricultural Research Institute). SSE changed by year by about 1%-2%, averaging 94%-95%. Mean values for cultivars ranged from 95.78% (Deltaopal) to 93.98% (Nazilli 84S) in 2003, and from 95.67% (Sayar 314) to 94.75% (Carmen) in 2004. Determining The Relationships Between Yield And Yield Attributes In Sunflower, Yalçin Kaya, Göksel Evci̇, Sezgi̇n Durak, Veli̇ Pekcan, Tahi̇r Gücer

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Relationships between seed yield and agronomic characters in sunflower were investigated without considering genetic effects. Sunflower hybrids were evaluated in 3 categories: constant hybrids, control hybrids (mostly the same in each year), and test hybrids (changing each year). Seed yield was positively correlated with oil content, plant height, and 1000-seed weight, but flowering and physiological maturity period correlated negatively with yield based on the analyses in this research. A diverse relationship was determined between the seed yield of the hybrids and oil content. This study was conducted to determine the effect of Bacillus thuringiensis var. kurstaki on the larvae of Thaumetopoea solitaria in the search for an alternative control method with minimal undesirable side effects. Four larval stages were tested with various concentrations of the bacterium under controlled conditions by dipping pistachio saplings in relevant suspensions and feeding larvae on their leaves. The effect of B. thuringiensis var. kurstaki was significantly higher on the 1^{st} instar larvae than on the 2^{nd} and the 3^{rd} instar larvae, and the effect was significantly higher on the 2^{nd} instar larvae than on the 3^{rd} instar larvae. …

This dissertation analyzed spatial agglomeration economies associated with the geographical distribution of the U.S. biotech industry. Three location issues associated with the biotech industry were addressed in the study. The first study utilized a Bayesian spatial tobit model and examined the overall and regional differences in factors affecting the location of the U.S. biotech industry. The second study examined the inter- and intra-industry spatial association of biotech related research and development (R&D) and testing facilities across all contiguous U.S. counties employing a Spatial Two-Stage Least Squares model. Landowners in the Lower Mississippi Valley or Delta may be willing to consider alternative land uses for some acreage, particularly for marginal agricultural lands. Recreational hunting, fishing, and wildlife watching opportunities on private land for public use may be a possible way to provide income to landowners and restore marginal lands as a contributor to the local economy. This study is mainly intended to determine quantitatively the economic effects of crawfish imports on the domestic crawfish industry. Inverse demand systems are used to estimate the price and scale flexibility as an indicator for the effects of imports on crawfish domestic price. A variety of algebraic forms for empirical consumer allocation models have been developed. Economic theory, however, does not provide the necessary fundamental criteria to choose ex ante among the alternative specifications. Recent research suggests that adopting a common currency increases bilateral trade. Over the past decade, the peeling segment of the Louisiana crawfish industry has faced the challenge of remaining competitive in an increasingly global market. Since the mid-1990’s, there has been escalated discussion among Louisiana crawfish processors on the need for a crawfish peeling machine. The International Trade Commission determined that the U.S. crawfish industry had been “materially injured” by the imported tailmeat and ruled China was, in fact, dumping crawfish in the U.S. by selling below fair market value in the host country. Louisiana is the beneficiary of more than 30% of the U.S. coastal wetlands, but the state’s wetland loss accounts for about 90% of the total throughout the continental United States. The Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act of 1990 and the $1.9 billion that has recently been dedicated by Congress for coastal restoration activities will certainly aid in restoration efforts. However, these dedicated funds are but a small fraction of the total monies that will be required to maintain/restore Louisiana’s degraded wetlands.
