Impact Of The Agricultural Sector On The Arkansas Economy In 2003, Jennie Popp, Nathan Kemper, Wayne Miller
AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins
Agriculture and associated agricultural activities are major contributors to the Arkansas economy. Agriculture is defined as the sum of agricultural production and processing activities, unless otherwise specified, and includes crop and animal production and processing, agricultural support industries, forestry and forest products, and textile goods. Agriculture contributes to the economy through direct agricultural production and value-added processing, and also leads to economic activity in other parts of the economy.

Root Lesion And Burrowing Nematodes In Western Australian Cropping Systems, Vivien Vanstone
Root Lesion And Burrowing Nematodes In Western Australian Cropping Systems, Vivien Vanstone
Bulletins 4000 -
Nematodes are common soil pests that feed on the roots of a wide range of crop plants in all agricultural areas of Western Australia, irrespective of soil type and rainfall. Nematodes multiply on susceptible hosts. Consequently, as nematode populations increase, crop production is limited. Cereal yield losses due to nematodes in Western Australia are in the order of 5 to 15 per cent per annum, but individual losses as high as 40 per cent have been recorded.

Nitrogen Management For Wheat Protein And Yield In The Esperance Port Zone, Jeremy Lemon
Bulletins 4000 -
This manual is part of a joint project between the Department of Agriculture and Food WA and the South East Premium Wheat Growers Association (SEPWA) with funding from the Grains Research and Development Corporation (GRDC). Growers in the Esperance port zone have been concerned with declining protein levels in wheat and its impact on farm returns as well as strong messages from processors of Esperance wheat that they require higher protein in the wheat they mill and process.
The project entailed grower involvement in designing and executing field scale experiments using farmer machinery, grower workshops, field days and meetings to …

Effects Of Soil Solarization And Organic Amendment Treatments For Controlling Meloidogyne Incognita In Tomato Cultivars In Western Anatolia, Gali̇p Kaşkavalci
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The efficacy of soil solarization, Dazomet, chicken manure (CM), olive processing waste (OPW), and soil solarization in combination with CM or OPW or half doses of Dazomet against Meloidogyne incognita on tomato cultivars was investigated in greenhouses in western Anatolia, Turkey, between 2002 and 2004. The maximum soil temperature average was increased 47.1 °C by soil solarization alone at the 15 cm soil depth of soil in the first year. Soil solarization alone and in combination with CM increased the mean of maximum soil temperature by 41.2 and 40.9 °C respectively, at the 15 cm soil depth in the second …

Estimates Of Broad-Sense Heritability For Seed Yield And Yield Components Of Grass Pea (Lathyrus Sativus L.), Mevlüt Türk, Sebahatti̇n Albayrak, Necmetti̇n Çeli̇k
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was carried out to estimate the broad-sense heritability for seed yield and some yield components of 15 grass pea (Lathyrus sativus L.) genotypes in 2000-2002 at Bursa, in the Marmara region of Turkey. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. The heritabilities for seed yield, plant height, pod number, seed number per pod, seed number per plant, 1000-seed weight, biologic yield, and harvest index were estimated as 30%, 42%, 61%, 19%, 56%, 75%, 82%, and 49%, respectively. It was found that biologic yield was the trait least affected by environment, followed by 1000-seed …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This study was conducted with barley in greenhouse conditions in order to investigate seed inoculation with 5 different N_2-fixing (Bacillus licheniformis RC02, Rhodobacter capsulatus RC04, Paenibacillus polymyxa RC05, Pseudomonas putida RC06, and Bacillus OSU-142) and 2 different phosphate-solubilising (Bacillus megaterium RC01 and Bacillus M-13) bacteria in comparison to control and mineral fertiliser (N and P) application. Among the strains used in the present study, 6 plant growth promoting rhizobacteria (PGPR) stimulated indole acetic acid (IAA) production and 3 of them stimulated phosphate solubilisation; all bacterial strains fixed N_2 and significantly increased the growth of barley. Available phosphate in soil was …
Depth Of Dormancy And Desiccation Tolerance In Acer Trautvetteri Medv. Seeds, Mustafa Yilmaz
Depth Of Dormancy And Desiccation Tolerance In Acer Trautvetteri Medv. Seeds, Mustafa Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This first exploratory study on the seed physiology of Acer trautvetteri, a broadleaved tree found in Caucasia and northern Turkey, demonstrated that A. trautvetteri seeds exhibit physiological dormancy and require about 3 months of chilling for complete dormancy loss. Germination percentages significantly increased with the chilling duration and were 38.67%, 76.00%, and 96.00% after 1, 2, and 3 months of chilling, respectively. Moreover, while the seeds can be safely dried to at least 10% moisture content, reducing the moisture content to 3% killed all the seeds. Acer species exhibit different seed characteristics in terms of seed dormancy existence and desiccation …

The current financial and fuel crises threaten food security in poorer nations and among the poor in wealthier countries. Sustainable food production benefits communities and their food supply and can maintain farming systems in less developed agricultural regions. Many small farmers have long practiced organic agriculture, but face pressure to adopt green revolution farming, using chemicals and commercial seed. Some are resisting this, but lack the technology to apply organic methods on a larger scale. Cuba provides an instructive example of a nation that confronted a sudden food and fuel crisis by adopting organic agricultural technologies across production systems that …

John Owens: Speeches and Appearances
Folks, I've been asked to talk with you today about my vision for the future, so let's get right to it. First, my vision is this: Agriculture will remain Nebraska's leading industry. It's importance will grow in our state. It already has. In 1990 one in four Nebraskans depended upon agriculture in some way for their livelihood. Last year Dr. Charles Lamphear told us it's one in three in his study for the Nebraska Policy Institute.
