Comparison Of The Performance Of Autumn And Spring Sowing Of Chickpeas In A Temperate Region, Sai̇m Özdemi̇r, Ufuk Karadavut

The effects of autumn and spring sowing on chickpea yield were investigated by examining yield components in a 2-year (2000-2001 and 2001-2002 growing seasons) field experiment in a temperate region, in north-west Turkey. Twenty-one chickpea genotypes (2 registered varieties of winter type for the Mediterranean region and 19 breeding lines) were evaluated in 2 sowing seasons (autumn and spring). Autumn-sown crops were subjected to -2.1 °C and snow cover twice (2 and 4 days) in the first year and -7.6 °C and snow cover 3 times (8, 14 and 6 days) in the second year. Hydrolysis Of Polysaccharides With 77% Sulfuric Acid For Quantitative Saccharification, Güneş Uçar, Mualla Balaban
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Classical standard hydrolysis of polysaccharides with 72% sulfuric acid was modified in 2 manners. In order to avoid treatment in an autoclave at 120 °C under pressure, wood or pulp material was first swollen in cold 77% acid followed by hydrolysis steps in diluted acid solutions. Further, the neutralization of the hydrolyzate with dilute barium hydroxide was carried out in heated mother liquor ensuring a crystalline precipitate of barium sulfate. Digestion enables the separation of clear aliquots by decantation in large amounts for analysis by HPLC. Measuring The Market Power Of The Banana Import Market In Turkey, Seli̇m Adem Hatirli, Eugene Jones, Ali̇ Riza Aktaş

Banana production in Turkey represents a small fraction of that required to meet domestic consumption. Domestic consumption totaled 188,000 t in 2000, whereas production amounted to just 64,000 t, or 34% of consumption. The gap between consumption and production is made up by imports and 5 multinational firms control the flow of more than 80% of the global banana trade. Given this firm dominance in the world trade of bananas, oligopoly theory would suggest the presence of underlying structural forces that could facilitate price-enhancing market power. Classification is vital for the evaluation of agricultural produce. However, the high costs, subjectivity, tediousness and inconsistency associated with manual sorting have been forcing the post harvest industry to apply automation in sorting operations. Fuzzy logic (FL) was applied as a decision making support to grade apples in this study. Quality features such as the color, size and defects of apples were measured through different equipment. The same set of apples was graded by both a human expert and a FL system designed for this purpose. Grading results obtained from FL showed 89% general agreement with the results from the …

Land evaluation is of great importance in guiding decisions on land uses in terms of their potential and conserving natural resources for future generations. The main objective of this study was to determine land resources and to evaluate land utilization types and their suitability in Beypazarı area soils. Kinetics Of Nonenzymatic Browning Reaction In Citrus Juice Concentrates During Storage, Nuray Koca, Hande Selen Burdurlu, Feryal Karadeni̇z
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The kinetics of nonenzymatic browning in citrus juice concentrates (orange, lemon, grapefruit and tangerine) during 8 weeks of storage at 28, 37 and 45 ºC were investigated. Browning development was followed by measuring absorbance at 420 nm (A_{420}) and using CIE-Lab color system. Analysis of kinetic data from A_{420} values suggested a zero-order reaction for nonenzymatic browning, while changes in L* and b* parameters followed a first-order reaction. Activation energy for nonenzymatic browning determined by A_{420} values ranged from 17.60 to 35.27 kcal mol^{-1}, while those for L* and b* parameters were 6.67-28.99 kcal mol^{-1} and 15.38-34.2 kcal mol^{-1}, respectively. …

The Role Of Eicosanoids On Nodulation Reactions To Bacterium Serratia Marcescens In Larvae Of Ostrinia Nubilalis, Hasan Tunaz, Ali̇ Arda Işikber, Mehmet Kubi̇lay Er

Nodulation is the first step of the cellular defense reactions to bacterial infections in insects. In the present study, injecting larvae of the European corn borer, Ostrinia nubilalis, with eicosanoid biosynthesis inhibitors, immediately prior to intrahemocoelic injections of the bacterium, Serratia marcescens, sharply reduced the nodulation response to bacterial challenges. Separate treatments with specific inhibitors including dexamethasone (a phospholipase A_2 inhibitor), indomethacin (a cyclooxygenase inhibitor) and phenidone (a dual cyclooxgenase/lipoxygenase inhibitor) also impaired the ability of European corn borers to form nodules in reaction to bacterial challenges. The effects of various sewage sludge (biosolid) rates and a single dose barnyard manure application on the fruit yield, growth, nutrition and heavy metal accumulation of apple trees were investigated. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with 4 replicates in dry conditions in Van, in the East Anatolia region of Turkey in 2000 and 2001. Sewage sludge was added to the soil at the rates of 0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 kg tree^{-1}. Barnyard manure was applied to the soil at a rate of 25 kg tree^{-1}. Exploring the attitude of farmers toward risk is important in understanding their managerial decisions, especially given the exposure of farmers to risky events such as drought. However, a survey of the literature finds no study of the risk attitudes of farmers in Turkey. Therefore, this study examines the risk attitudes of farmers in the Lower Seyhan Plain of Turkey. While some variation by utility function exists in the classification of the sampled farmers into risk averse and risk preferring categories, the overwhelming evidence is that the sampled farmers are risk averse. Dalea L. (prairie-clover) is a large genus of the western hemisphere consisting of herbaceous and shrubby plants (Great Plains Flora Association, 1986). Barneby (1977) lists over 160 species that range from the Canadian prairies into South America. The forage value of daleas for livestock is well known. Ornamentally, daleas are showy plants, desirable for their foliage as well as for their delicate flowers. Their value as a legume can also contribute to sustainable landscapes.

Panicle diseases are among the major constraints to sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) production in the northern Great Plains; host plant resistance is the primary management option. However, essentially all commercial sorghum hybrids contain A1 cytoplasm, which raises the concern about increased disease risk as a result of cytoplasmic genetic uniformity. The effects of water potential on germination were studied in six provenances of Pinus brutia from different bioclimatic zones in Turkey. Water potentials between 0 and -8 bars were obtained using polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG-6000) solutions. Seeds were kept for 28 d in light (12 h photoperiod at 1000 lux) and at 20 ± 0.5 ^oC. A decrease in water potential produced a marked reduction in germination percentage, germination speed and germination value. Significant variations between the provenances were found. The aim of this study was to develop an effective procedure for detecting land use/land cover (LU/LC) changes resulting from agricultural encroachment on eastern Mediterranean coastal dunes by using remote-sensing techniques. Historic LU/LC information was extracted from aerial photos taken in 1976 and IKONOS imagery was acquired in 2002 to determine the current LU/LC pattern. The remotely sensed aerial and satellite data were classified by integrating spectral information with measures of texture, in the form of statistics derived from the variance, co-occurrence matrix and variogram. The objectives of this study were to identify suitable plant species for mass rearing and to determine some biological characteristics of the predator Serangium montazerii Fürsch (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) used in the biological control of Dialeurodes citri (Ashmead) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). The development time, mortality rate, preoviposition, oviposition and postoviposition periods and fecundity of S. montazerii were studied on various host plants using Bemisia tabaci (Genn.) (Homoptera: Aleyrodidae). Two cotton (Çukurova-1518 and Deltapine) and two eggplant (Pala and Çukurova topağı) cultivars were used at 25 ºC and 65 ± 5% RH in growth chambers. This study examines the perceptions of both consumers and producers towards farmers’ markets. Consumer perceptions are generalized from several previous studies conducted throughout the United States. Producer information was gathered through a survey of members of one farmers’ market in Arkansas. Previous studies, conducted in both rural and urban areas, indicate that the typical famers’ market customer is well educated and is of higher than average income. These consumers place great importance on quality of produce, knowledge that produce is grown locally, and the social interaction obtained through the farmers’ market experience. NE422T triticale (X Triticosecale Wittmack) (Reg. no CV-27, PI 629028) was developed cooperatively by the Nebraska Agricultural Experiment Station and the USDA-ARS. It was jointly released in 2001 by the developing institutions. NW422T was selected from the cross ‘Trical’/‘UB-UW26’ where Trical is most likely ‘Trical 100’ (a forage triticale developed by Resource Seed Inc., a subsidiary of Goldsmith Seed Company, Gilroy, CA) and UB-UW26 is an unknown winter triticale germplasm line given to the breeding program in the 1980s.The cross was made in 1990. Blackleg is spread primarily by wind, with the heaviest spore fall out normally occurring within 500 metres of any canola residue. Each year canola residue continues to produce blackleg spores at a diminishing rate until the stubble has completely broken down (see Diagram 2). In WA this breakdown could take up to 4 years, and so the recommendations are for long rotations.
The blackleg fungus can attack all the aerial parts of the plant. While leaf infection is the most obvious symptom, high levels of leaf infections do not necessarily indicate that major losses will occur from blackleg. It is …

StockGuard has been initiated to develop a series of biosecurity plans for the animal industries in Western Australia. Through StockGuard, representatives from the animal industries have been working with the Department of Agriculture Western Australian to identify potential threats to each of the animal industries and to develop action plans detailing how these threats can be managed. The overall purpose of StockGuard is to highlight threats to the animal industries before they occur and to develop effective ways to minimise the potential impact of these threats.

Ascochyta blight, caused by Ascochyta rabiei (Pass.) Lab., is the most important disease in the chickpea (Cicer arietinum L.) in many countries, including Turkey. Efforts to control the disease were made using host-plant resistance as the most efficient and economical way. A total of 41 exotic genotypes were evaluated for resistance to A. rabiei and also yield and yield criteria near Antalya in the west Mediterranean region of Turkey in the 2000-2001 and 2001-2002 seasons.
