G1512 Establishing Conservation Plantings Of Nut Trees And Shrubs By Direct Seeding Methods, Steven D. Rasmussen, Scott J. Josiah, Jon Wilson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide explains how to plant and raise nut trees and shrubs from seed. Seeding methods, planting design, site preparation and post-planting care are discussed.

Introduction

Conservation tree and shrub plantings create wildlife habitat, improve water quality, produce marketable nuts, and enhance landscape diversity. Usually, nursery-grown seedlings are used to establish these plantings. However, a number of problems exist when using seedlings, including increased costs and reduced initial tree vigor and survival. Direct seeding of tree and shrub seeds avoids many of these problems, and is a proven, effective means to establish conservation plantings in Nebraska and elsewhere.

G1507 Summer Patch And Necrotic Ring Spot, John E. Watkins

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide describes the causes, predisposing conditions, and symptoms of summer patch and necrotic ring spot, and provides recommendations for their control.

Introduction

Two of the most destructive turfgrass patch diseases are summer patch and necrotic ring spot, both of which are present in Nebraska. The symptoms of necrotic ring spot and summer patch are essentially identical, making it difficult to distinguish the two apart in an affected turf. If the symptoms begin in May, necrotic ring spot is probably the cause; if they begin in July and August, then summer patch is suspect. In Nebraska summer patch is probably …

Are you prepared to make the best decisions about using antibiotics in animals?

Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, David Baltensperger, Pat Reece, Ivan Rush Jan 2003

Strategies For Range Beef Cattle Producers In Arid Environments Following Drought, Tom Holman, David Baltensperger, Pat Reece, Ivan Rush

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Precipitation can be below average for much of the Nebraska Panhandle and adjoining areas for prolonged periods. Prolonged drought results in an inadequate supply of forage for hundreds of thousands of beef cattle on millions of acres of rangeland. While some variation occurs among ranches and among pastures within a given ranch, all rangeland vegetation in arid environments like western Nebraska can be moderately to severely damaged by drought stress and/or excessive grazing. Consequently, even if soil moisture is not limited in the years following a drought, spring growth rate will be reduced and total annual forage production can be …

Choosing the proper hybrid can greatly enhance crop production profitability. This NebGuide illustrates how to use corn hybrid test data and adjust it to your farm when selecting seed. How often should you change hybrids? An Auburn University study compared the top corn hybrids from a 3-year regional trial (114 bushel average) with the top hybrids from the previous year's test (119 bushel average). Since the yields went from 114 to 119 bushels - a 5 bushel increase - using data from 11 locations and 8 years, should we expect twice that difference - a 10 bushel increase - with …

The effects of various sewage sludge (biosolid) rates and a single dose barnyard manure application on the fruit yield, growth, nutrition and heavy metal accumulation of apple trees were investigated. The experiment was conducted using a completely randomized design with 4 replicates in dry conditions in Van, in the East Anatolia region of Turkey in 2000 and 2001. Sewage sludge was added to the soil at the rates of 0, 10, 20, 40 and 60 kg tree^{-1}. Barnyard manure was applied to the soil at a rate of 25 kg tree^{-1}. Two years' data showed that the addition of sewage …

Risk Attitudes Of Farmers In Terms Of Risk Aversion: A Case Study Of Lower Seyhan Plain Farmers In Adana Province, Turkey, Turan Bi̇ni̇ci̇, A. Ali̇ Koç, Carl R. Zulauf, Ahmet Bayaner Jan 2003

Risk Attitudes Of Farmers In Terms Of Risk Aversion: A Case Study Of Lower Seyhan Plain Farmers In Adana Province, Turkey, Turan Bi̇ni̇ci̇, A. Ali̇ Koç, Carl R. Zulauf, Ahmet Bayaner

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Exploring the attitude of farmers toward risk is important in understanding their managerial decisions, especially given the exposure of farmers to risky events such as drought. However, a survey of the literature finds no study of the risk attitudes of farmers in Turkey. Therefore, this study examines the risk attitudes of farmers in the Lower Seyhan Plain of Turkey. While some variation by utility function exists in the classification of the sampled farmers into risk averse and risk preferring categories, the overwhelming evidence is that the sampled farmers are risk averse. One hundred eighty-two out of 200 estimated Arrow-Pratt risk …

Dalea Purpurea 'Stephanie', Dale T. Lindgren, Daniel Schaaf Jan 2003

Dalea Purpurea 'Stephanie', Dale T. Lindgren, Daniel Schaaf

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Dalea L. (prairie-clover) is a large genus of the western hemisphere consisting of herbaceous and shrubby plants (Great Plains Flora Association, 1986). Barneby (1977) lists over 160 species that range from the Canadian prairies into South America. The forage value of daleas for livestock is well known. Ornamentally, daleas are showy plants, desirable for their foliage as well as for their delicate flowers. Their value as a legume can also contribute to sustainable landscapes.

Dalea purpurea Vent., formerly designated as Petalostemon purpureus (Vent.) Rydb., and sometimes listed as Dalea purpureum is found growing from the Canadian prairie provinces to Texas …

Expression Of Susceptibility To Fusarium Head Blight And Grain Mold In A1 And A2 Cytoplasms Of Sorghum Bicolor, James P. Stack, Jeffrey F. Pedersen Jan 2003

Expression Of Susceptibility To Fusarium Head Blight And Grain Mold In A1 And A2 Cytoplasms Of Sorghum Bicolor, James P. Stack, Jeffrey F. Pedersen

West Central Research and Extension Center, North Platte

Panicle diseases are among the major constraints to sorghum (Sorghum bicolor) production in the northern Great Plains; host plant resistance is the primary management option. However, essentially all commercial sorghum hybrids contain A1 cytoplasm, which raises the concern about increased disease risk as a result of cytoplasmic genetic uniformity. To determine the influence of cytoplasmic background on the expression of susceptibility to panicle diseases, F1 hybrids with four nuclear genotypes in each of two cytoplasms (A1 and A2) were planted in three environmentally diverse geographic locations in Nebraska. Fusarium head blight ranged in …

Minor Chemical Constituents From Palm Fruit And Palm-Pressed Fibre, Siow Ching Bong Jan 2003

Minor Chemical Constituents From Palm Fruit And Palm-Pressed Fibre, Siow Ching Bong

Student Works (2000-2009)

The analyses of selected minor components in the developing palm fruits exhibited interesting distribution patterns, which may reveal their possible roles during maturation a process and their fates resulting from different treatments prior to extraction. The increase in phospholipids and sterols content due to the cellular proliferation at earlier stages had been observed. The major phospholipids found in the immature fruits are phosphatidylcholine, phosphatidylinositol and lysophosphatidylcholine. There was a transformation of phosphatidylcholine to other phospholipids in the presence of phospholipase D at 16 weeks after anthesis (WAA). The phosphatases and Iipases present in the immature fruits may be the inducible …
