Intensification In A Risky Environment: The Case Of Improving Private Grazing Land For Beef Production In Utah, Louise D. Sainsbury

Utah ranchers commonly face risks to their livelihoods. The objective of this work was to determine if ranchers could make profitable improvements to private land forage given the combined threat of low beef prices, drought, and possible loss of public grazing.

We used linear programming (LINDO) to identify the most profitable solutions for private land investment with an 11-year simulation. Operations were divided into small, medium, and large size classes. Various forage improvements and public permits were options. Esperance Downs Research Station (EDRS) was established in 1949 as an experimental farm. Knowledge from trials on the station has been instrumental in development of agriculture throughout the Esperance region. However, land degradation and in particular secondary salinity became widespread by the 1980s. With potential for similar problems to develop in the region, the EDRS rehabilitation program began in 1990/91. This report details the objectives of this project along with implementation procedures and an assessment of its achievements.

Historical Cattle And Beef Prices, Seasonal Patterns, And Futures Basis For Nebraska, 1960-2000, Dillion Feuz, Paul Burgener, Tom Holman

Prices for different classes of feeder steers and heifers, slaughter steers and heifers, slaughter cows and bulls are reported in Tables 1-23. These prices are analyzed in the text of this publication. Discounts and premiums for various weights, grades and sex are identified. Each price series is analyzed to determine long term price trends and seasonal patterns. Stocker, feeder and live cattle basis are calculated using USDA monthly average reported cash prices and the monthly average futures prices, Tables 14- 15, 23. Carcass cut-out values are reported in Tables 24-26.

Common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) demand is increasing with an alarming rate around the world, especially in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. Therefore, increase bean yield per hectare is the best way to meet the world demand rather than expansion of area under cultivation. The objectives of this experiment were to determine the genotypic variations for green bean and dry seed yield and magnitude of genotype x environment interaction effects on yield and yield components of common bean. Isolation And Fusion Of Cotton Protoplasts, Michael H. Renfroe, Ronald C. Hartwig, Roberta H. Smith

Virginia Journal of Science

Protoplasts were isolated from five species of Gossypium. Protoplast yield and viability were affected by incubation conditions, osmolarity, purification procedures, and cell source. Using an optimized procedure, highly viable protoplasts were isolated from cell suspensions, callus cultures, and leaf tissue of G. hirsutum, G. arboreum, G. klotzschianum, G. harknessii, and G. herbaceum. Protoplasts of G. harknessii were enucleated and successfully fused with protoplasts of G. hirsutum.

A major effort has been made by the beef industry in recent years to reduce the economic loss from injection site lesions. Injections of almost any vaccine or medication causes some lesion. The extent, severity and economic loss of the resulting lesion can be greatly reduced with cleanliness and by use of careful techniques for the placement of product into specific, designated sites.
