Groundwater Trends In The Agricultural Area Of Western Australia, R A. Nulsen Mar 1998

Groundwater Trends In The Agricultural Area Of Western Australia, R A. Nulsen

Resource management technical reports

In 1994 it was estimated that salinity affected more than 1.8 million ha of agricultural land in Western Australia (Ferdowsian et al. 1996). This area was predicted to expand to over three million ha by about 2020 and, if nothing is done to stem the expansion, to eventually affect some six million ha, or 30% of the agricultural land in the state. Damaging levels of salt accumulation in the root zone of both native and introduced plants can generally only occur when the groundwater levels are relatively cl te the variability of responses. Several depict episodic recharge (recharge as a …

Manipulation Of High Spatial Resolution Aircraft Remote Sensing Data For Use In Site-Specific Farming, Gabriel B. Senay, Andrew D. Ward, John G. Lyon, Norman R. Fausey, Sue E. Nokes

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

Three spatial data sets consisting of high spatial resolution (1 m) remote sensing images acquired in 12 spectral bands, an on-the-go yield map, and a Digital Elevation Model were co-registered and evaluated for spatial variability studies in a Geographic Information Systems environment. Separate on-the-go yield maps were developed for 3, 5, and 12 statistically significant mean yield classes. For each yield class, the corresponding mean spectral and elevation data were extracted. The relationship between mean spectral and yield data was strongly linear (r = 0.99). Also, a strong linear relationship between mean yield and elevation data (r = 0.92) was …

Air Temperature Variations And Rice Productivity In Bangladesh: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of The Yield And The Ceres-Rice Models, Rezaul Mahmood Mar 1998

Air Temperature Variations And Rice Productivity In Bangladesh: A Comparative Study Of The Performance Of The Yield And The Ceres-Rice Models, Rezaul Mahmood

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications

Potential increase in air temperature due to climatic change and inter-annual climatic variability and its impacts on crop productivity is of major concern to crop scientists. A number of physically-based models have been developed and applied to estimate crop–environment relationships. In the present study the performance of two such models (the YIELD and the CERES-Rice) are discussed. These two models are used to estimate boro rice productivity under normal and abnormal climate scenarios in Bangladesh. This study finds that boro rice productivity at Mymensingh predicted by the YIELD is higher than the prediction by the CERES-Rice. Productivity estimates for Barisal …

An Economic Assessment Of The Myanmar Rice Sector: Current Developments And Prospects, Kenneth B. Young, Gail L. Cramer, Eric J. Wailes

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

In this study, the Myanmar rice economy is described in the context of the current political situation and state of national economic development. The forces that are changing rice production and exports are identified; however, the rate of development involves a complex integration of government intervention and politics, as well as availability of resources. Probable scenarios for rice production and export are projected based on recent growth trends and expected infrastructure development. The Arkansas Global Rice Model is used to integrate the Myanmar rice sector with the global rice market in developing projections.

Marketing Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch Jan 1998

Marketing Practices Of Arkansas Beef Cattle Producers, Michael P. Popp, Lucas D. Parsch

AAES Research Reports and Research Bulletins

This report contains information from a 1996 survey on marketing practices of Arkansas beef cattle producers. While several studies have been completed on the profitability of retained ownership of beef cattle, few data are available on what marketing techniques and decision criteria cow-calf and stocker operations use to market their cattle. This report shows that there are some differences in opinions on marketing issues such as pooled cattle sales and retained ownership across cow-calf and stocker operations. Further, these operations use different sources of information to make marketing decisions. The results of this study can be particularly helpful in providing …

G98-1369 Drinking Water: Nitrate And Methemoglobinemia ("Blue Baby" Syndrome), Sharon Skipton, Delynn Hay

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses the blood disorder methemoglobinemia, its effect on infants and prevention methods. Methemoglobinemia is a blood disorder caused when nitrite interacts with the hemoglobin in red blood cells. Unlike hemoglobin, the methemoglobin formed in this interaction cannot carry sufficient oxygen to the body's cells and tissues. Although methemoglobinemia is rare among adults, cases have been reported among infants, where nitrate-contaminated well water was used to prepare formula and other baby foods. Nitrate in well water may result from point sources such as sewage disposal systems and livestock facilities, from nonpoint sources such as fertilized cropland, parks, golf courses, …

Fertilizer storage practices If stored safely in a secure location, fertilizers pose little danger to groundwater. Common sense suggests keeping fertilizer dry and out of the way of activities that might rip open a bag or allow rain to enter a bulk container.

G98-1352 Issues To Consider When Selling Cattle On A Grid Or Formula, Dillon M. Feuz Jan 1998

G98-1352 Issues To Consider When Selling Cattle On A Grid Or Formula, Dillon M. Feuz

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses issues and problems associated with matching cattle to the appropriate market.

Recently there has been a much greater emphasis on improving the quality and consistency of beef. Cattle producers, breed associations, feed suppliers and beef packers have initiated value based pricing methods. Grid pricing, formula pricing, and strategic alliances are examples of these new value based pricing methods. While these pricing methods may differ substantially in the carcass and management traits they seek to reward or penalize, they all have one common feature: price is established on each individual animal.

The goals of the new pricing methods …

G96-1346 Plants For Shade Landscapes, Don Steinegger, Donald E. Janssen, Roch E. Gaussoin, Steven Rodie, Anne Streich

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide includes a plant list for shade landscapes.

While some may think of shade as a deterrent to gardening, it can be an asset if the special needs of shade-loving plants are considered. There are also ways to reduce the amount of shade, allowing more sunlight and air circulation into the landscape. To solve shade garden problems, shade's positive and negative aspects need to be considered.

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin Jan 1998

G98-1364 Feeding Children Ages 2 To 5, H. Darlene Martin

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide defines nutritional needs and healthy eating patterns for children ages 2 to 5.

Children Grow at Their Own Rate

Children move though growth spurts throughout childhood. Usually, a child will grow about 2 1/2 inches and gain about four or five pounds each year between the ages of 2 and 5. By 15 months old, most children have developed enough fine motor skills to feed themselves without help, if allowed to do so. Appetites vary with young children as well as adults. Parents and caregivers need to help promote a healthy pattern of eating rather than using controlling …

G98-1379 Remodeling Nebraska Homes Containing Lead-Based Paint, Carroll S. Welte

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide discusses precautions do-it-yourself home remodelers should take when working with surfaces that may contain lead-based paint. It also addresses the effects of lead poisoning in children and adults and testing surfaces for lead-based paint.

Introduction

All it takes is a trip to one of the discount lumber yards on a Sunday afternoon to realize the huge number of do-it-yourself home remodelers. Books and videos making projects and repairs look simple line the aisles.

Home remodeling isn't simple, though. Before beginning a project one needs to plan. In homes built before 1978, do-it-yourself home remodelers need to consider the …

G98-1344 Basics Of Feeding Horses: Feeding Management, Kathleen P. Anderson Jan 1998

G98-1344 Basics Of Feeding Horses: Feeding Management, Kathleen P. Anderson

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

This NebGuide outlines appropriate practices for feeding horses.

Often, nutritional management of the equine is a misunderstood topic. Successful nutritional management depends upon combining information on the nutrient requirements of different horses and their eating behaviors with the knowledge of how to best meet those requirements. Proper nutritional management is extremely critical in the horse due to the unique arrangement and anatomy of its digestive tract. Often, it is the feeding method, not feed composition, which leads to digestive disorders in horses. This NebGuide includes information on the basic, daily feeding management for horses.

G98-1368 Medical Record Privacy, Mary Ellen Rider, Lisa Ahlberg, Judy Weber

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

Medical record privacy is an important issue of the 1990s. This NebGuide focuses on access to our medical records, the risks of inappropriate use of medical records, and what you as a health consumer can do should you face those risks.

Many of us think our medical records are confidential, seen only by our doctors. The truth is, however, a number of people have access to them. The real question is whether we have true privacy of our medical records.

Think of all the information in your medical records. In addition to diagnostic and testing information, they contain the details …

Hef481 Maintaining A Treasure Chest: Your Health Record (Participant Manual), Jodene K. Jurging, Mary Ellen Rider, Rebecca L. Versch, Judy Weber

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension: Historical Materials

The health care system in the United States is changing in ways that require consumers to take more responsibility for their health. The preventive philosophy of health care demands that we move from passive recipients to active consumers of health care. A very important part of health care is maintaining accurate medical records for yourself and members of your family.

You may say, "My physician keeps that record." Have you ever seen a copy of that file? Do you have just one health care provider responsible for your care? Does your medical provider pay your bills? How private is your …
