Genetic Relationships Of Turkish Bread Wheat Cultivars, Nusret Zenci̇rci̇
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Forty-two bread wheat cultivars released up to 1990 in Turkey have been investigated in order to understand their genetic relationships. Correlation, regression and principal component analyses have been applied to cultivar-to-cultivar parentage coefficients and similarity indices based on pedigree data. Correlation and regression analyses between cultivar-to-cultivar parentage coefficients and similarity indices have shown higher relationships implying that both estimates could be used interchangeably to predict genetic relationships in cultivars. Principal component analyses failed to group cultivars clearly, but some subgrouping were obtained.

Effects Of Temperature And Time Of Harvest On The Growth Andyield Of Aubergine ( Solanum Melongena L.), Ahmet Kürklü

An experimental study was conducted to define the response of aubergine to different temperatures in controlled greenhouses. Set temperatures of the greenhouses were 14, 18, 22, 26 and 30°C. In terms of vegetative growth, the plant response was the highest to the highest temperature then gradually decreasing for the lower temperatures. This was in contrast with the fruit development since as the temperature decreased from 30°C, mean fruit weight and size increased, and the total fruit yield was highest in 22°C which indicated an optimum temperature. This study was carried out under greenhouse conditions in 1994-1995. The influence of phosphate treatments (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4g P 2 O 5 /pot) on meiotic chromosome pairing and the number of arms bound at the first metaphase (MI) in plants of diploid Senu variety of meaddow fescue ( Festuca pratensis Huds.) and its advanced generation (C 6 ) autotetraploid (Tetra Senu) were studied. In diploids, quadrivalents and univalents frequencies showed no difference with changes in phosphate treatments. An experiment retail plastic packaging system was used to compare the atmospheric composition within sealed packs containing tomato fruits. A range of plastic films with different permeability properties were tested to study the effects of these conditions on the changes in postharvest qualities of tomatoes harvested at the pink stage of maturity and stored at 13 o C for 60 days. The films used were 20 micron (PE20) and 50 micron (PE50) polyethylene, 10 micron polyvinylcholoride (PVC) or 25 micron polypropylene (PP) compared with unwrapped fruit as a control. This study was carried out under greenhouse conditions in 1994-1995. The influence of phosphate treatments (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4g P 2 O 5 /pot) on chromosome segregaiton at the first anaphase (AI) and tetrad regularity in plants of diploid Senu variety of meadow fescue ( Festuca pratensisHuds.) and its artificial autotetraploid were studied. In addition, the relationship was determined between balanced AI segregations and regular tetrads with respect to regular meiosis. Firmness is one of the most important factor for determination of tomatoes quality. Distructive measurement of tomato firmness is one of the evaluation methods of fruit firmness. The Universal Instron is most common used machine for measurement of most adeqequate fruit firmness. During destructive measurement of firmness considedation of force or deformation values as a firmness of fruits could give incorrect result and taking epicarp strength over deformation values is more accurate to concern the firmness of tomato. Sorption Of Aldicarb Sulfoxide By Samples Of Some Calcareous Soils From Turkey, Kemal Y. Gülüt, Mahmut Sayin

Sorption of aldicarb and aldicarb sulfoxide was investigated spectrophotometrically on 16 soil samples. Ten of them were from the Çukurova region. The results showed that organic matter is the single soil property to give correlation with sorption of aldicarb. Clay minerals are also important in sorption but their effect is masked by fine carbonates and organic matter. CaCO 3 sorbs aldicarb weakly. Aldicarb sulfoxide was also sorbed by soil constituents very weakly.

This research was carried out in Çarsamba, Samsun during 1991-1993 by using Paclobutrazol which is a growth reter-dant, three times in a year (Spring, Summer and Autumn) to Cardinal, Redhaven and Glohaven peach varieties. It was also applied from the soil in spring. It was found that the application of Paclobutrazol from the soil was more effective than the leaf application. It's application in fall did not affect the vegetatif development. The spring and summer applications of it showed similiar effects. The purpose of this study is to approximate the actual forest state to an aptimal forest state within different conversion period lenghts, to ensure the sustainability of allowable cut over planning horizon, to maximize the total present net value calculated with financial analysis. A linear programming model was developed and used to test 436 different strategies for planning of Gazipasa Forest Management Unit. The Bafra Plain (latitude 41 0 35' N; longitude 35 0 56' E) which located surrounding of Kizil Irmak delta in the northern Turkey, has a short plant growing season for spring sowings. However, the soils of the region (about 80 000 ha) may have an important soybean [ Glycin max (L.) Merr.] production potential with using the earliest or mid-earliest cultivars. Safflower ( Carthamus tinctorius L.) can be a potential oilseed crop for the low-rainfall areas of Central Anatolia, Turkey. The purpose of this study was to determine response of safflower cultivars to weed and the row spacing. The experimental design was used a split-split plot arrangement in a completely randomized block with 3 replications. Main plots were cultivars (5-118 and 5-154), sub plots were weed treatment (weed not removed and weed removed manually) and sub-sub plots were row spacing (20, 40 and 60 cm). Drug yield and volatile oil content and its components of Thymus vulgaris were investigated during the different growing periods under both lowland and mountainous conditions. The highest drug yields were obtained from lowland conditions during the post flowering stage. Also, it has been determined that environmental conditions have significantly influenced the harvest dates. The 17 components were identified in the essential oil of Thyme. Essential oil content and its components were significantly affected by both climatic and ecological conditions and various harvest dates.

This study is concerned with the production of haploids of linseed. Anthers of eight genotypes were cultured both on solid and in liquid medium. It was found that callus induction rate was low in both media and also the cultivars significantly affected callus induction rate both on solid and in liquid medium. The cultivar Blue-Chip gave, on average, the maximum (3.67%) callus induction rate on solid medium and the cultivar Antares gave, on average, the maximum (3.35%) callus induction rate in liquid medium. The cultivar Norman produced callus on solid medium but did not produce any callus in liquid medium. …

This experiment was conducted to study the effects of natural zeolite on the performance of laying hens. One hundred and eighty 37-week-old Babcock B-300 hens were fed with a diet containing 0, 20, 40, 60 and 80 g clinoptilolite/kg in an experiment consisting of 36 hens per treatment during a 4x28 days experimental period. All feeding programs were isocaloric and isonitrogenous. Hens were put at random into 5 treatment groups (12 replicates and 36 hens per treatment). High water use vegetation systems for salinity control were trialed on a 70 ha catchment located about 15 km north of Williams, Western Australia. The catchment receives about 545 mm annual rainfall and 1870 mm annual evaporation. Development of salinity is characterised by passive discharge upslope from a dolerite dyke. Because recharge exceeds the discharge capacity of current seeps, there is potential for new seeps to develop in the mid to lower slopes.

The south-western Woolbelt receives annual rainfall between 500-700 mm with long dry summers and cool wet winters. The dominant land use is grazing of Merino sheep for wool productiion, with smaller areas (5-15%) of cropping. All of the catchments selected were affected by salinity, but the extent and severity varied. In all catchments the location of the major expression of salinity was the valley floor.

The agricultural region in the central Avon catchment is declining in both arable land and native vegetation. This decline has been due to the clearance of large tracts of native vegetation and its subsequent replacement by exotic crops and pasture species. The loss of vegetation has led to regional land degradation in the form of soil erosion and land salinisation. Therefore, changes in land management practices are required to make agricultural production more compatible with land conservation. The redlegged earth mite (RLEM) Halotydeus destructor (Tucker) (Acarina: Penthaleidae) is an introduced, major pest of crops and pastures across south Australia. RLEM adversely effect pasture by destroying legume seedlings in germinating pastures and reducing pasture production and seed yield. One of the ways to reduce the effect of RLEM is by breeding legume cultivars with RLEM resistance. This involves screening of many hundreds of potentially resistant plants and lines in a short time.
