The Response Of Five Tropical Plant Species To Natural Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Peter S. Searles May 1994

The Response Of Five Tropical Plant Species To Natural Solar Ultraviolet-B Radiation, Peter S. Searles

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Tropical regions currently receive the highest global levels of solar ultraviolet-B radiation (UV-B, 280-320 nm) even without ozone depletion. Thus, the influence of natural, present-day UV-B irradiance in the tropics was examined for five tropical species, including three native rainforest tree species and two economically important species. Solar UV-B radiation conditions were obtained vi using either a UV-B excluding plastic film or a near-ambient UV-B transmitting film in a small clearing on Barro Colorado Island (BCI), Panama (9 ° N). Significant differences were often exhibited as increased foliar UV-B absorbing compounds, increased leaf mass per area, and reduced leaf blade …

Dungpat Microenvironmental Effects On Germination And Establishment Of Crested Wheatgrass, Ghulam Akbar May 1994

Dungpat Microenvironmental Effects On Germination And Establishment Of Crested Wheatgrass, Ghulam Akbar

All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023

Complementary greenhouse and field studies investigated the effects of ambient environmental conditions on cattle dungpat moisture, temperature, nutrient concentration, and crust formation dynamics, which in turn influence seed germination and seedling establishment in dungpats. 'Hycrest' crested wheatgrass [Agropyron desertorum (Fisch. ex Link) X A. cristatum (L.) Gaert.] was used as a representative revegetation species.

After collecting feces from Holstein steers that had been fed crested wheatgrass seeds, uniform dungpats were prepared and placed on two soil types (loam and coarse sand) in containers under three watering treatments (field capacity, 1/2 field capacity, and no water) in the greenhouse. Dungpat …

South Dakota Farm And Home Research, South Dakota State University Apr 1994

South Dakota Farm And Home Research, South Dakota State University

South Dakota Farm and Home Research: 1949 -1998

Dean's Comments: Dean David A. Bryant reflects on Dr. Ray Moore's career as a teacher and agricultural research leader, and the impact his commitment to "creating opportunities for a lifetime" has had on South Dakota. [p] 1
CRM: it settles differences: Landowners often find themselves locking horns with government and special interest groups over use of natural resources. Coordinated Resource Management (CAM) brings all parties together to work things out as a team. [p] 2
South Dakota: not too cold for cattle: A common perception among second party investors is that South Dakota winters are too cold to feed cattle …

Biosystematics And Diversification In The Genus Striga Lour. (Scrophulariaceae) In Africa, Kamal-Eldin Ibrahim Mohamed Apr 1994

Biosystematics And Diversification In The Genus Striga Lour. (Scrophulariaceae) In Africa, Kamal-Eldin Ibrahim Mohamed

Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations

Of the 34 taxa of Striga (29 species) that occur in Africa, 25 are endemic. Species diversity differs from region to region. The subtropical zone has 74% of the taxa including 41% endemics. Within this region, the West African part (from Senegal to eastern Nigeria) has 62% of the total taxa including 24% endemics. South of the equator the number of taxa is 56% of the total with 21% endemics, a proportion slightly less than that for West Africa. I recognize 29 species based on extensive herbarium and field studies. A new species from Angola is described. Striga yemenica previously …

Cattle Feedlot Management In South Dakota, Donald Taylor, Dillion M. Feuz Mar 1994

Cattle Feedlot Management In South Dakota, Donald Taylor, Dillion M. Feuz

Economics Research Reports (1969 - 2017)

This research report is based on the results of a mail survey of randomly selected South Dakota beef cattle feeders undertaken during the winter of 1991-92. The purpose of the survey was to determine the nature of management practices followed by the state's cattle feeders and whether those practices differ by size- and/or location-of-feedlot.

Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason Mar 1994

Bulletin 4283 - Nitrogen Fertilisers For Cereal Production, M. G. Mason

Bulletins 4000 -

Because fertiliser prices are high, it is important to understand what affects the response to fertilisers by crops.

Among the many factors influencing crop response to nitrogen applications, the most important are the season, soil type, paddock history, time of application and source of nitrogen. Before deciding whether to use nitrogen on a cereal crop, which source to use and at what rate, you need some understanding of how these factors work.

Greatest responses to nitrogen fertilisers can be expected in areas with a relatively long growing season. In such areas light soils with a low nitrogen status give the …

Fundamental Principles Of Plant Pathology For Agricultural Producers, Paul C. Vincelli Mar 1994

Fundamental Principles Of Plant Pathology For Agricultural Producers, Paul C. Vincelli

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

All crop plants produced in Kentucky have the potential to become diseased under certain conditions. Diseases of crops can affect yield and/or quality of the harvested commodity. This can impact profitability and increase the risks of farming.

A plant is diseased when it is affected by some agent that interferes with its normal development. Some disorders are caused by noninfectious factors, such as temperature extremes or nutrient deficiencies. However, this publication focuses on diseases caused by infectious microorganisms.

Diseased plants exhibit a variety of symptoms. These can include stunting, yellowing, wilting, twisting, reddening, browning, blighting, root rot, fruit rot, …
