Return To Beringia: Parasites Reveal Cryptic Biogeographic History Of North American Pikas, Kurt E. Galbreath, Eric P. Hoberg
Return To Beringia: Parasites Reveal Cryptic Biogeographic History Of North American Pikas, Kurt E. Galbreath, Eric P. Hoberg
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Traditional concepts of the Bering Land Bridge as a zone of predominantly eastward expansion from Eurasia and a staging area for subsequent colonization of lower latitudes in North America led to early inferences regarding biogeographic histories of North American faunas, many of which remain untested. Here we apply a host–parasite comparative phylogeographical (HPCP) approach to evaluate one such history, by testing competing biogeographic hypotheses for five lineages of host-specific parasites shared by the collared pika (Ochotona collaris) and American pika (Ochotona princeps) of North America. We determine whether the southern host species (O. princeps) …

Marshallagia lichtenfelsi sp. n. is a dimorphic ostertagiine nematode occurring in the abomasum of mountain goats, Oreamnos americanus, from the Western Cordillera of North America. Major and minor morphotype males and females are characterized and distinguished relative to the morphologically similar Marshallagia marshalli/Marshallagia occidentalis from North America and Marshallagia dentispicularis, along with other congeners, from the Palearctic region. The configuration of the convoluted and irregular synlophe in the cervical region of males and females of M. lichtenfelsi is apparently unique, contrasting with a continuous and parallel system of ridges among those species of Marshallagia, including …
Evolutionary History Of Caribbean Species Of Myotis, With Evidence Of A Third Lesser Antillean Endemic, Roxanne J. Larsen, Peter A. Larsen, Hugh H. Genoways, Francois M. Catzeflis, Keith Geluso, Gary G. Kwiecinski, Scott C. Pedersen, Fernando Simal
Evolutionary History Of Caribbean Species Of Myotis, With Evidence Of A Third Lesser Antillean Endemic, Roxanne J. Larsen, Peter A. Larsen, Hugh H. Genoways, Francois M. Catzeflis, Keith Geluso, Gary G. Kwiecinski, Scott C. Pedersen, Fernando Simal
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
Currently, four species of Myotis are known from the islands of the Caribbean (Myotis dominicensis, M. martiniquensis, M. nesopolus, and M. nigricans). Myotis dominicensis and M. martiniquensis are endemic to the Lesser Antilles, whereas M. nesopolus and M. nigricans are considered conspecific with mainland populations. Recent phylogenetic and phylogeographic studies provided hypotheses regarding the origin and diversification of M. dominicensis and M. martiniquensis. However, these studies focused primarily on convergent morphology or distribution patterns of this genus and not on the evolutionary history of Caribbean Myotis. Here, we explore variation across multiple datasets …

Bats Of Barbados, Hugh H. Genoways, Roxanne J. Larsen, Scott C. Pedersen, Gary G. Kwiecinski, Peter A. Larsen
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The chiropteran fauna of Barbados includes representatives of four families — Noctilionidae, Phyllostomidae, Vespertilionidae, and Molossidae — including 1 piscivore (Noctilio leporinus), 1 omnivore (Brachyphylla cavernarum), 1 pollenivore/nectarivore (Monophyllus plethodon), 1 frugivore (Artibeus jamaicensis), and 2 insectivorous species (Myotis nyctor and Molossus molossus). Despite an early report, we believe that preponderance of the evidence available at this time is that E. fuscus is not part of the fauna of Barbados. The Barbadian chiropteran fauna of 6 species is much smaller than those on the four neighboring Lesser Antillean islands to …
Examination Of Annual Variation In The Adult Sex Ratio Of Pronghorn (Antilocapra Americana), Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways
Examination Of Annual Variation In The Adult Sex Ratio Of Pronghorn (Antilocapra Americana), Justin D. Hoffman, Hugh H. Genoways
University of Nebraska State Museum: Mammalogy Papers
The adult sex ratio (ASR) is an important component of a population’s demographics and can be used as an indicator of a population’s status. However, the causes of annual variation in ASRs are unknown for many species. Fluctuations in ASR can arise through demographic stochasticity and intense selective harvesting. In this study we investigate the longterm patterns of variation in the ASRs (bucks: 100 does) for four populations of pronghorn (Antilocapra americana) in western Nebraska. We used multiple variables in a model selection process to predict annual fluctuation of pronghorn ASRs. We found that the number of bucks: 100 does …

Coupled Electromagnetic And Heat Transfer Model For Microwave Heating In Domestic Ovens, Krishnamoorthy Pitchai, Sohan Birla, Jeyamkondan Subbiah, D. D. Jones, Harshanardhan Thippareddi
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
Microwave ovens are used extensively for heating a variety of not-ready-to-eat food products. Non-uniform heating of foods in microwave ovens is a major concern in assuring microbiological safety of such products. The non-uniform heating of foods is attributed by complex interaction of microwaves with foods. To understand this complex interaction, a comprehensive model was developed to solve coupled electromagnetic and heat transfer equations using finite-difference time-domain based commercial software. The simulation parameters, cell size, heating time step, and number of iterations for steady state electromagnetic field were optimized. The model was validated by 30 s heating profile of a cylindrical …

Moringa oleifera leaf extract (MLE) is rich in amino acids, ascorbate, zeatin, minerals, and many other compounds known for their growth-promoting potential. This study was planned to explore the potential of MLE as a seed priming agent to increase the germination rate and plant vigor of 3 range grasses, i.e. Cenchrus ciliaris, Panicum antidotale, and Echinochloa crusgalli. The priming strategies used were hydropriming, CaCl_2, PEG-8000 (-1.1 M Pa), MLE (concentrate; 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, and 1:40 dilutions with distilled water), and matripriming using saturated jute mat for 24 h. The primed seeds were placed between 2 moist Whatman No. 1 filter …
An Evaluation Of Seed Spacing Accuracy Of A Vacuum Type Precision Metering Unit Based On Theoretical Considerations And Experiments, İsmet Önal, Adnan Deği̇rmenci̇oğlu, Arzu Yazgi
An Evaluation Of Seed Spacing Accuracy Of A Vacuum Type Precision Metering Unit Based On Theoretical Considerations And Experiments, İsmet Önal, Adnan Deği̇rmenci̇oğlu, Arzu Yazgi
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Currently the most widely used machine for precision seeding of cotton and maize seed is vacuum type. The capture of seeds by vacuum plate and the release of seeds from the vacuum plate should be performed precisely without missing or doubling. The physical phenomena should be clarified theoretically to understand how the precision seeding mechanism works. To solve these problems, an attempt was made to develop a nomogram using equations describing the technical characteristics of the seeder used in this study and to describe the seed capture mechanism relying on basic principles of fluid mechanics and aerodynamic properties of seeds. …

The Role Of Short-Term High Temperature Pretreatment On The Uv-B Tolerance Of Barley Cultivars, Nuran Çi̇çek, Ivanka Fedina, Hüsnü Çakirlar, Maya Velitchkova, Katya Georgieva
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The impact of pretreatment with high temperature (45 °C for 45 min) on the UV-B tolerance of 4 barley cultivars (Hordeum vulgare L. 'Bülbül-89', 'Kalaycı-97', 'Tarm-92', and 'Tokak-157/37') was examined. The response of the plants to treatment was evaluated by measuring the pigment content, chlorophyll a fluorescence, oxygen evolution, fraction of oxygen-evolving complex, proline content, UV-B-absorbing compounds (A_{535} and A_{300}), and stress markers (malondialdehyde, H_2O_2, and UV-B marker). Regardless of high temperature pretreatment, UV-B irradiation decreased the photosynthetic pigment content, photosystem II activity, oxygen evolution, and the fraction of oxygen-evolving complex in almost all of the barley cultivars. UV-B treatment …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Citrus paradisi Macfad. ‘Duncan’ was transformed with constructs coding for the wild-type and mutant RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRp) of Citrus tristeza virus (CTV) for exploring replicase-mediated pathogen-derived resistance (RM-PDR). The RdRp gene was amplified from a CTV genome and used to generate the wild-type and 2 mutant RdRp constructs for plant transformation. One mutant had the key amino acids GDD changed to AAA (RdRp-mGDD), and the second mutant had a deletion encompassing the GDD domain (RdRp-\DeltaGDD). Etiolated epicotyl segments of Duncan grapefruit (Citrus paradisi Macfad. 'Duncan') were transformed with each of these constructs using the Agrobacterium-mediated transformation method. From 4540 …

Pattern Analysis Of Multi-Environment Yield Trials In Barley (Hordeum Vulgare L.), Soner Yüksel, Mevlüt Akçura
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Pattern analysis, cluster and ordination techniques were applied to grain yield data of 24 cultivars of 2- and 6-rowed barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) grown in 26 environments in Turkey during 2004-2008 to identify patterns of genotype (G), environment (E) and genotype × environment interaction (GEI) in barley multi-environment trials (METs). Analysis of variance showed that 86.9% of the total sum of squares was accounted for by E. Of the remaining sum of squares, the contribution of GEI was almost 9 times that of the contribution of G alone. Knowledge of environmental and cultivar classification helped to reveal several patterns of …
Identification Of Species Of Vicia Subgenus Vicia (Fabaceae) Using Chloroplast Dna Data, Nadia Haider, Imad Nabulsi, Nizar Mirali
Identification Of Species Of Vicia Subgenus Vicia (Fabaceae) Using Chloroplast Dna Data, Nadia Haider, Imad Nabulsi, Nizar Mirali
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Vicia subgenus Vicia (Fabaceae) contains several economically important food and forage legume species. Generally, the taxonomy and identification of these species have relied heavily on a few diagnostic morphological characters (e.g., the number of flowers per inflorescence). However, there are several specimens with intermediate morphological characters that make diagnosis of these species using those characters a difficult task for nonspecialists and render results that are not always accurate. The use of molecular markers, therefore, is the most attractive alternative strategy for a more accurate identification of species of the subgenus Vicia. In the present study, an attempt was made to …

Genetic Characterization Of Pyrenophora Graminea Isolates And The Reactions Of Some Barley Cultivars To Leaf Stripe Disease Under Greenhouse Conditions, Harun Bayraktar, Kadi̇r Akan
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
The genetic diversity of Pyrenophora graminea, the causal agent of barley leaf stripe disease, was characterized by restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of the rDNA internal transcribed spacer region and intersimple sequence repeat (ISSR) analysis. A total of 45 P. graminea isolates recovered from different geographic origins and barley cultivars or genotypes produced identical RFLP banding patterns with HinfI, MspI, Hin6I and BsuRI restriction enzymes. ISSR analysis indicated that there was little genetic variability among the isolates. A dendrogram based on Jaccard's coefficient separated the isolates into 4 clusters with 12% dissimilarity. In the dendrogram, the isolates collected from different …

Morphological And Biochemical Evaluation Of Selected Almond [Prunus Dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb] Genotypes In Northern Serbia, Slavica Colic, Vera Rakonjac, Gordan Zec, Dragan Nikolic, Milica Fotiric Aksic
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
In order to determine the overall degree of polymorphism and detect similarities among genotypes, 19 almond [Prunus dulcis (Mill.) D.A.Webb] genotypes were studied. Variation in traits related to phenology, morphology, and fruit quality was observed, and the results indicated a high morphological diversity of almond genotypes. The majority of important correlations were determined among the traits representing nut size (nut width, nut length, nut thickness, and nut weight) and leaf size (leaf length, leaf width, and leaf area). The lack of correlation between kernel size and chemical compounds enables the creation of a new almond cultivar with large kernels and …
Soil Failure Mode In Front Of A Multiple-Tip Horizontally Operated Penetrometer, Abbas Hemmat, Azar Khorsandi, Vahab Shafaie
Soil Failure Mode In Front Of A Multiple-Tip Horizontally Operated Penetrometer, Abbas Hemmat, Azar Khorsandi, Vahab Shafaie
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Mechanical resistance of a soil to failure has been widely used to estimate the degree of soil compaction. Our previous study showed that the magnitude of force measured by the horizontally operated penetrometer depends on the soil failure mode in front of the sensor tip. In this research, 2 horizontally operated penetrometers were developed to investigate whether the critical depth (dc) at which the soil failure transition from brittle to compressive occurs is dictated by the aspect ratio (working depth/width ratio) of the tip or of the shank of the sensor. In the first sensor, the width of the shank …

Two Japanese-type plum (Prunus salicina Lindell) cultivars, 'Autumn Giant' and 'Black Beauty', were harvested at commercial maturity stage and either packed in nonperforated modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) or treated with a 500 ppb dose of 1-methylcyclopropene (1-MCP) alone or given a combination of 1-MCP and MAP. After these treatments, the plum samples were stored at 0 °C for 60 days. Treatment with either 1-MCP or modified atmosphere packaging (MAP) alone or with the 1-MCP+MAP combination reduced fruit softening, ethylene production, respiration rate, weight loss, and flesh browning, and resulted in higher flesh firmness, titratable acidity, and total soluble solids as …

The mechanical properties of wheat varieties are important in the milling industry. This study investigated the correlation between the protein content of 5 wheat varieties and their mechanical properties of rupture force, energy absorbed, and hardness. Based on correlation coefficients, a strong correlation was found between the protein content of all wheat varieties investigated and their mechanical properties. The correlation levels between the protein content and rupture force, energy absorbed, and hardness were r = 0.953, 0.883, and 0.884 for X-X load orientation and r = 0.955, 0.963, and 0.954 for Y-Y load orientation, respectively.

In this study, the possibility of bread machine utilization as a quality control tool in the baking industry was investigated. Three different flour samples (F_1, F_2, and F_3) having different protein contents were obtained and then 12% wheat starch and 2% vital gluten were added to these flours to adjust protein ratios. The physicochemical and rheological properties of these flour combinations were analyzed. Specific volume, crumb grain attributes, crust and crumb color, and bread firmness in terms of compressibility (g) were measured. Specific volumes changed between 5.22 and 6.69 mL g^{-1} and between 4.87 and 6.29 mL g^{-1} for hearth …

Black Walnut (Juglans Nigra L.) Standing Volume In The Riparian Forests Of The Czech Republic, Lubomir Salek, Daniel Zahradnik, Lubomir Tipmann, Robert Marusak
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Black walnut (Juglans nigra L.) is one of the most valuable non-native tree species growing on alluvial soils in the southeastern part of the Czech Republic. However, its standing volume is currently calculated according to oak tables, although its growth and standing volume is likely different. In order to determine the observed black walnut standing volume and to express a difference between black walnut and other main tree species growing on alluvial soils, 63 temporary sample plots of pure black walnut stands were established and, for determination of tree volume, 63 sample trees with various dimensions were felled and measured …
