Creating A Geographical Information System For Freshwater Crabs And Fishes In Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Walter R.T. Witschey, Panos S. Economidis, Dimitra Bobori
Virginia Journal of Science
A geographical information system (GIS) for freshwater crabs and fishes in Greece was created in response to the European Environmental Agency's (EEA) biodiversity initiative for European Union countries. A total of 1931 collections, made with seines, dipnets, and backpack electroshockers in 32 drainages of Greece, yielded 126 species of fishes and crabs in 2,359 data records including species, latitude, longitude, drainage, prefecture, and locality, 731 also include stream order, elevation, gradient, stream width and depth, pH, temperature, and distance to river mouth. Our GIS indicates current distributions of species, species rich and poor areas, anomalous species distributions, areas warranting further …
Identification Key To Fishes In Fresh Waters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Panos S. Economidis
Identification Key To Fishes In Fresh Waters Of Greece, Eugene G. Maurakis, Panos S. Economidis
Virginia Journal of Science
The European Environmental Agency formulated a biodiversity initiative in 1996 specifying a freshwater stream-monitoring program to inventory, identify and describe aquatic and terrestrial species in European Union countries. With one of the richest freshwater ichthyofaunas in Europe (126 fish taxa: 97 species and 29 subspecies of primary or secondary freshwater fishes), Greece has two extinct fish species, five listed as critically endangered, and 29 considered endangered and/or vulnerable. There are, however, no published identification guides that are available for identifying fish specimens from fresh waters in Greece. We present an English translation of the only available identification key (in Greek) …
On Nancy Ordover's American Eugenics: Race, Queer Anatomy, And The Science Of Nationalism, Markus Rheindorf
On Nancy Ordover's American Eugenics: Race, Queer Anatomy, And The Science Of Nationalism, Markus Rheindorf
Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
Nancy Ordover's American Eugenics is a very personal book, not so much in terms of its content, but because of the convictions and a deep-felt sense of injustice that have inspired it. And while the author is straightforward in acknowledging her personal motivations, this is not to suggest that American Eugenics ever lapses into personal anecdote or polemic; far from it, the book is a serious and tightly argued attempt to grasp, in Ordover's words the resiliency of this often discredited but never dormant philosophy (xvi). In order to do this, Ordover goes on to argue in her …

Host Species, Age And Sex As Factors Affecting The Susceptibility Of The African Tephritid Fruit Fly Species, Ceratitis Capitata, C. Cosyra And C. Fasciventris To Infection By Metarhizium Anisopliae, S. Dimbi, N. K. Maniania, S. A. Lux, J. M. Mueke
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
The effect of host age and sex on the susceptibility of 3 tephritid fruit fly species, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), C. cosyra (Walker) and C. fasciventris (Bezzi) to the entomopathogenic fungus Metarhizium anisopliae (Metchnikoff) Sorokin was studied in the laboratory. Three adult host ages, 0 (<1 day-old), 7-day-old and 14-day-old, were used. All 3 species were susceptible to fungal infection, although there were differences in the levels of susceptibility among the hosts. Age accounted for the largest variability in mortality followed by species, while sex had the lowest variability. Of the 3 host ages tested, the 0- and 7-day-old flies were more susceptible to fungal infection than the 14-day-old flies. Male and female C. fasciventris flies generally succumbed earlier to fungal infection than the other two species. Female flies of C. cosyra and C. fasciventris were also generally more susceptible to fungal infection than the males, although differences were apparent at 3 and 4 days after treatment but not 5 days after treatment. Age accounted for the largest variability in lethal time mortality values (LTs). Mean LT-values generally indicated that the speed of kill was faster among younger flies than the older flies. LT95 ranged between 3.9-4.9 days in the 0-day-old flies, 4.3-6.1 days in the 7-day-old flies and 4.6-6.1 days in 14-day-old flies in the different species and sexes. The implication of this study for the management of fruit flies is discussed.

In a previous study, comparison of the behavior of teneral Glossina morsitans morsitans on waterbuck, Kobus defassa (a refractory host), and on two preferred hosts, buffalo, Syncerus caffer, and ox, Bos indicus, suggested the presence of allomones in the waterbuck odor. Examination of the volatile odors by coupled gas chromatography-electroantennographic detection showed that the antennal receptors of the flies detected constituents common to the three bovids (phenols and aldehydes), as well as a series of compounds specific to waterbuck, including C8 - C13 methyl ketones, δ-octalactone, and phenols. In this study, behavioral respones of teneral G. m. morsitans to different …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Works
Light alkane hydrocarbons are present in major quantities in the near-surface atmosphere of Texas, Oklahoma, and Kansas during both autumn and spring seasons. In spring 2002, maximum mixing ratios of ethane [34 parts per 109 by volume (ppbv)], propane (20 ppbv), and n-butane (13 ppbv) were observed in north-central Texas. The elevated alkane mixing ratios are attributed to emissions from the oil and natural gas industry. Measured alkyl nitrate mixing ratios were comparable to urban smog values, indicating active photochemistry in the presence of nitrogen oxides, and therefore with abundant formation of tropospheric ozone. We estimate that 4-6 teragrams of …

Tomographic Reconstruction Of Treponemal Cytoplasmic Filaments Reveals Novel Bridging And Anchoring Components, Jacques Izard, Bruce F. Mcewen, Rita M. Barnard, Thomas Portuese, William A. Samsonoff, Ronald J. Limberger
Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications
An understanding of the involvement of bacterial cytoplasmic filaments in cell division requires the elucidation of the structural organization of those filamentous structures. Treponemal cytoplasmic filaments are composed of one protein, CfpA, and have been demonstrated to be involved in cell division. In this study, we used electron tomography to show that the filaments are part of a complex with a novel molecular organization that includes at least two distinct features decorating the filaments. One set of components appears to anchor the filaments to the cytoplasmic membrane. The other set of components appears to bridge the cytoplasmic filaments on the …
Interlink Between Biological Diversity And Climate Change: Advice On The Integration Of Biodiversity Considerations Into The Implementation Of The United Nations Framework Convention On Climate Change And Its Kyoto Protocol
United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications
Biological diversity includes all plants, animals, microorganisms, the ecosystems of which they are part, and the diversity within species, between species, and of ecosystems. No single component of biodiversity (i.e., genes, species or ecosystems) is consistently a good indicator of the overall biodiversity as these components can vary independently. Functional diversity describes the variety of ecological functions of species or groups of species in an ecosystem. It is a biodiversity descriptor that provides an alternative way of understanding biological diversity, and the effects of disturbances caused by human activities, including climate change, on ecosystems.

Morph-Dependent Fatty Acid Oxidation In A Wing-Polymorphic Cricket: Implications For The Trade-Off Between Dispersal And Reproduction, Anthony J. Zera, Zhangwu Zhao
Anthony Zera Publications
Although a considerable amount of information is available on the ecology and physiology of wing polymorphism, much less is known about the biochemical–genetic basis of morph specialization for dispersal versus reproduction. Previous studies have shown that the dispersing morph of the wing-polymorphic cricket, Gryllus firmus, prioritizes the accumulation of triglyceride flight fuel over ovarian growth, while the opposite occurs in the flightless morph during the first week of adulthood. In this study, we compared the in vivo rate of lipid oxidation between genetic stocks of flight-capable versus flightless morphs to determine the role of lipid catabolism in morph specialization …

Folliculovarium mediterraneum n. sp. is described and figured in detail from the intestine of the Mediterranean moray eel Muraena helena (Muraenidae) in the Scandola Nature Reserve, off Corsica in the western Mediterranean. This new species closely resembles F. gymnothoracis Gu & Shen, 1983 and F. xishaense Gu & Shen, 1983 from marine fishes off China, but it may differ from both in not having specialized circum-rynchal spines. It differs from the former by having slightly larger eggs and a longer esophagus, and from F. xishaense by having tegumental spines, a longer esophagus, and a nonrelated host (an eel rather than …

Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Extensive new collections of specimens of Rhinebothroides spp. from a wide range of Neotropical freshwater potamotrygonid stingrays in numerous localities permitted critical evaluation of the validity of the 7 nominal species in the genus. Some qualitative characters previously used in the taxonomy of this group are highly variable within and among populations, and most morphometric and meristic characters thought to have taxonomic value for this group overlapped among several previously defined nominal species. Characters that were consistent throughout populations and that clearly define morphotypes supported recognition of four species: R. freitasi (syn. R. circularisi and R. venezuelensis), R. glandularis …

Background: Growth factor, cytokine and chemokine-induced activation of PI3K enzymes constitutes the start of a complex signalling cascade, which ultimately mediates cellular activities such as proliferation, differentiation, chemotaxis, survival, trafficking, and glucose homeostasis. The PI3K enzyme family is divided into 3 classes; class I (subdivided into IA and IB), class II (PI3K-C2α, PI3K-C2β and PI3K-C2γ) and class III PI3K. Expression of these enzymes in human tissue has not been clearly defined.
Methods: In this study, we analysed the immunohistochemical topographical expression profile of class IA (anti-p85 adaptor) and class II PI3K (PI3K-C2α and PI3K-C2β) enzymes in 104 formalin-fixed, paraffin embedded …

In the early 1970s, Sulfolobus was first isolated by Thomas Brock and co-workers from sulfur-rich acidic hot springs in Yellowstone National Park. Sulfolobus became one of the model organisms of Archaea in general, and of Crenarchaea in particular. Many of its unusual physiological characteristics have been investigated, and several of its thermostable enzymes have been studied in considerable detail. For fundamental reasons, and because of its potential for industrial applications, Sulfolobus has been selected for a genome sequence project. The recent completion of the Sulfolobus solfataricus genome has set the stage for a series of postgenome research lines that will …

Feeding Responses Of Juvenile And Adult Streblospio Benedicti Webster (Spionidae) To Organic Chemicals Bound To Glass Microbeads, Heidi Kathryn Mahon
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Spionid polychaetes feed at the sediment-water interface using a pair of ciliated palps. Polychaetes select food particles based upon characteristics including size, texture, specific gravity and organic coatings. Juvenile and adult spionids have different stable isotopic carbon signals, indicating the potential to differentiate organic cues ontogenetically. In the present study, the feeding responses of juvenile and adult Streblospio benedicti Webster to seven organic coatings bound (five amino acids and two carbohydrates) to glass microbeads were tested. Juveniles and adults were highly selective for all seven types of organically coated beads. Juveniles were highly selective for threonine; whereas adults were highly …

Characterization Of Spy1600 A Putative Hyaluronidase Gene In Group A Streptococci, Karin M. Berling
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
Group A Streptococci (GAS), also known as Streptococcus pyogenes, can cause a variety of human diseases ranging from asymptomatic to life threatening. Exactly how a single type of organism is able to inflict such a multitude of diseases remains to be fully understood. One possibility includes the large number of secreted virulence factors expressed by the organism. The recent sequencing of three streptococcal genomes has indicated the existence of several previously unknown genes, some of which may encode possible virulence factors. Among these is Spy1600, which based on its sequence similarities has been proposed to encode a hyaluronidase, a …

Here we present the complete genomic sequence of bovine herpesvirus 5 (BHV-5), an alphaherpesvirus responsible for fatal meningoencephalitis in cattle. The 138,390-bp genome encodes 70 putative proteins and resembles the α2 subgroup of herpesviruses in genomic organization and gene content. BHV-5 is very similar to BHV-1, the etiological agent of infectious bovine rhinotracheitis, as reflected by the high level of amino acid identity in their protein repertoires (average, 82%). The highest similarity to BHV-1 products (≥95% amino acid identity) is found in proteins involved in viral DNA replication and processing (UL5, UL15, UL29, and UL39) and in virion proteins (UL14, …

Reviews Of Fatal Harvest: The Tragedy Of Industrial Agriculture And The Fatal Harvest Reader: The Tragedy Of Industrial Agriculture, Edited By Andrew Kimbrell, Charles A. Francis
Great Plains Research: A Journal of Natural and Social Sciences (through 2013)
Fatal Harvest introduces and dispels key myths about industrial agriculture: greater efficiency; safe and nutritious food that is cheap to consumers; benefits to wildlife and environment; how biotechnology will save the world. In essays by leading proponents of a more equitable and sustainable food system, the book presents compelling evidence that alternative systems guided by an agrarian ethic will better address our food needs while protecting our natural environment and soil resources.
Wendell Berry cites the separation of people from their food supply and natural environment as a causal factor in our ready acceptance of today's industrial agriculture. When we …

Lessons From A Quiet Classic, Daniel R. Brooks
Harold W. Manter Laboratory of Parasitology: Faculty Publications
Parasitology has a rich tradition of studies linking taxonomy, ecology, and life cycles and development. This tradition has produced an enormous amount of empirical evidence demonstrating that parasites form highly integrated reproductive-developmental-ecological systems that are highly persistent through space and time. As well, phylogenetic studies of parasites, especially of parasitic platyhelminths, represent 1 of the most progressive areas of systematic biology. Consequently, parasitologists should be at the forefront of research in evolutionary developmental biology (evo-devo) and integrative biology, and parasite systems should be model systems of choice for those research programs. Species of the digenean, Alloglossidium, provide a superb …

Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
Studies have shown that 2-aminoethoxydiphenyl borate (2-APB) inhibits thrombin-mediated influx of Ca2 + through store-operated calcium channels in human platelets. Based on this molecule, two sets (boron analogues and the non-boron analogues) were synthesized and characterized by IR, NMR and CHN analysis and evaluated in human platelets to block thrombin-induced [Ca2+] elevation.
The synthesis of the non-boron compounds was performed in a simple one step process. According to the literature, some of these compounds were synthesized previously by a complicated two-step process.
All the compounds synthesized were tested for biological activity and the results showed that they …

In Na,K-ATPase membrane preparations from shark rectal glands, we have previously identified an FXYD domain-containing protein, phospholemman-like protein from shark, PLMS. This protein was shown to associate and modulate shark Na,K-ATPase activity in vitro. Here we describe the complete coding sequence, expression, and cellular localization of PLMS in the rectal gland of the shark Squalus acanthias. The mature protein contained 74 amino acids, including the N-terminal FXYD motif and a C-terminal protein kinase multisite phosphorylation motif. The sequence is preceded by a 20 amino acid candidate cleavable signal sequence. Immunogold labeling of the Na,K-ATPase …
