Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam
Effects Of Acidic Precipitation On The Soil Chemistry And Bioavailability Of Aluminum, Manganese, And Copper, Alan Christie Stam
Doctoral Dissertations
The effects of acidic precipitation on the soil solution chemistry and bioavailability of AI, Mn, and Cu in soils from spruce-fir and oak-hickory forests were examined in laboratory, greenhouse, and field studies.
Soil solution concentrations of labile (inorganic) monomeric AI (LMAI) increased with decreasing solution pH and with increasing exchangeable AI and decreasing exchangeable Ca/AI of the soils. Dissolved organic matter decreased with decreasing solution pH and influenced decreases in nonlabile (organic) monomeric AI (NLMAI).
Simulated acidic precipitation increased LMAI concentrations in the laboratory equilibration and greenhouse studies, but not in the field plot studies in oak-hickory and spruce-fir forests. …
Prediction Of Release Properties Of Silicone Coated Paper Through Analysis Of Coating Particle Size And Distribution, Kent Bartholomew
Prediction Of Release Properties Of Silicone Coated Paper Through Analysis Of Coating Particle Size And Distribution, Kent Bartholomew
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
Silicone release coatings are gaining in popularity. The use of water-borne emulsions is seeing its way into the production of release coatings as well as pressure sensitive applications.
Thermoset silicone release coatings systems consist of a reactive polymer, a crosslinker, and a catalyst. A condensation reaction takes place to form the low surface energy silicone film which is primarily what gives good release property.
It is believed that an emulsion's stability, and hence quality, can be related to the particle size and distribution.
It was the goal of this study to quantify the relationship between particle size/distribution and release properties …

An Analysis Of The Wash And Flotation Deinking Processes, Brian L. Felgner
Paper Engineering Senior Theses
The purpose of this paper is to obtain data, so that we may compare the ability of Floatation vs. Wash deinking to produce a paper of equal standards as the original unprinted base-stock.
It was determined that both flotation and wash deinked stock with the addition of 40% fresh pulp can produce a paper of equal physical and optical properties as the unprinted stock from which it was made.
Floatation deinked stock was found have a higher materials cost, however, it displayed better strength and opacity properties than wash deinked stock. The difference is thought to result from a large …
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe
Site-Directed Mutagenesis Of The Putative Processing Site Of Recombinant Human Immunodeficiency Virus Reverse Transcriptase, Susan M. Poppe
Masters Theses
The human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is the etiological agent of the acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS). This retrovirus, encodes a RNA dependent DNA polymerase, reverse transcriptase (RT), which is essential to virus replication. Biochemical analysis indicated that RT is composed of 2 polypeptides of 66,000 and 51,000 daltons (p66 and p51) which combine to form a heterodimer. This heterodimer is thought to arise from the post-translational processing where p66 is made and either autocatalytic or proteolytic cleavage events result in a heterogeneous p66/p51. Site-directed mutagenesis was used at the proposed processing site to probe HIV-RT processing.
Three prokaryotic expression vectors …

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The effect of disulfiram and/or serotonin rich foods (SRF) on the urinary excretion of 5-hydroxytryptophol (5-HTOL) and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) in normal male subjects was investigated. Urine collections were obtained on 1) regular serotonin free diet, 2) SRF, 3) serotonin free diet with disulfiram, and 4) SRF with disulfiram. Urinary excretion of 5-HTOL in ug/gm creatinine during disulfiram administration was 112.0 ± 24.1. Five HTOL (ug/gm creatinine) with disulfiram and SRF increased to 1532 ± 352.0 (p < 0.001). Five-HIAA (mg/g creatinine) before and after SRF was 3.4 ± .44 and 33.1 ± 6.1 respectively, p < 0.001. With disulfiram and SRF the excretion of was 24.2 ± 3.2 mg/g creatinine which was significantly greater than when on the regular diet (p < 0.001) than the excretion on SRF alone (p < 0.05)
Key words: Disulfiram, serotonin, 5-hydroxytryptophol, 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid, urinary excretion, high performance liquid chromatography, alcoholism
Hourly Fluctuation Of Middle Ear Pressure As A Function Of Age In School-Age Children, Susan Hogue Henry
Hourly Fluctuation Of Middle Ear Pressure As A Function Of Age In School-Age Children, Susan Hogue Henry
Dissertations and Theses
Tympanometry is a useful means of evaluating the status of the middle ear. For the pediatric population, tympanometry is particularly valuable for determining the presence of middle ear effusion. The test has been incorporated in many school hearing conservation programs because of its ease of administration, objectivity, and diagnostic value.
In a study by deJonge and Cummings (1985), the hourly fluctuation of middle ear pressure was reported in a group of kindergarten-age children. The variability of middle ear pressure for that group of children averaged 150 daPa. In the present study, a maturational effect of this hourly fluctuation was observed …
Regulation Of Queuine Insertion Into Transfer Rna: Effects Of Tumor Promoters, Bonnie Jean Brooks
Regulation Of Queuine Insertion Into Transfer Rna: Effects Of Tumor Promoters, Bonnie Jean Brooks
Chemistry & Biochemistry Theses & Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to treat normal human fibroblasts with known tumor promoters and observe queuine modification of tRNA. The queuine insertion enzyme, tRNAguanine ribosyltransferase, was studied in vivo and in vitro. Tumor promoter-treated human fibroblast cultures exhibited variable queuine-insertion rates with a transient inhibition that correlated with variable levels of queuine modified tRNA over time in culture from passages 3 — 8. In contrast the in vitro studies showed that phorbol cetera and saccharin actually increased insertion with strong evidence indicating phosphorylation as a positive modulating force of the enzyme activity. It is proposed that chronic stimulation …

Electrostatic Effects On Airborne Asbestos Monitoring, Roxanne Francis
Electrostatic Effects On Airborne Asbestos Monitoring, Roxanne Francis
Biological Sciences Theses & Dissertations
The affects of electrostatic forces on the Membrane Filter Method (MFM) used for air-borne asbestos monitoring have been investigated for many years. Several studies have indicated that these forces interfere with the collection of asbestos fibers on the membrane filter, which results in an underestimated analysis of the airborne concentration. By varying the electroconductivity of the extension cowls on the filter cassettes, it was speculated that the significance of the electrostatic forces could be statistically analyzed. Four sets of filter cassettes with grounded conductive (GC) extension cowls, ungrounded conductive (UC) extension cowls, grounded nonconductive (GN) extension cowls, and ungrounded nonconductive …

Effect Of Photoperiod On Developmental Morphology And Enolase Isoenzyme Immunohistochemistry In Rat And Djungarian Hamster Superficial Pineal Glands, Chalmer D. Mcclure
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
The best understood functional activity of the pineal gland is its diurnal production of melatonin in response to environmental lighting cues. Several enzymes of the melatonin pathway respond to daily photoperiod changes, for example hydroxyindole-O-methyltransferase (HIOMT) and serotonin N-acetyltransferase (SNAT). Increased levels of the glycolytic enzyme neuron-specific enolase (NSE) are thought to reflect increased physiological demands placed on neurons and neuroendocrine tissues. Homodimer non-neuronal enolase isoenzyme (NNE) is immunolocalized to cells, and the hybrid enolase (consisting of subunits from NSE and NNE) has been seen in cerebellar stellate and basket cells. Although not rate limiting, concentrations of both NSE and …
The Effect Of An Anti-Osteoclastic Agent And A Collagen Sponge On Root Resorption Following Regenerative Periodontal Surgery In The Dog, Rudolf Hahn
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Previous studies indicate that root resorption is a frequent sequela to significant amounts of periodontal repair following experimental regenerative periodontal surgical procedures in animal models. To study if root resorption can be reduced or prevented, periodontal repair was evaluated in large horizontal circumferential defects in the dog in the absence of influence from the oral environment. Diphosphonate (Cl2 MDP) applied topically to the root surfaces prior to wound closure as well as the use of a collagen sponge membrane (Helistat®) draped over the root surfaces and a control with no additional treatment after defect creation were the modalities employed. …

The Temporal And Spatial Distribution Of Blue Crab Larvae On The Mid-Atlantic Bight Adjacent To The Chesapeake Bay, 1982-1983, Lyle Michael Varnell
OES Theses and Dissertations
Recruitment processes are important information for the management of commercially and recreationally exploited marine species. Recruitment processes of the Chesapeake Bay's most important commercial and recreational species, the blue crab, are unknown, due in part to the lack of knowledge of the processes directly preceeding recruitment.
The present study was undertaken to investigate and explain the movement and developmental patterns of blue crab larvae while offshore. Interannual and intraseasonal variations of these patterns were also examined.
Sampling occurred from May to November during 1982 and 1983. Larvae were collected at three depths (neuston layer (upper 10 cm), one meter and …

Picoplankton/Phytoplankton Dynamics In Hampton Roads, Virginia, Leslie E. Dorworth
OES Theses and Dissertations
The biomass distribution of the three main size components of the phytoplankton (net, nano, and picoplankton) was examined in the lower Chesapeake Bay. Work was done at two stations during the spring and neap tidal cycles when freshwater flow into the bay was at its seasonal minimum and maximum. Emphasis was placed on how the picoplankton ( < 2.0 μm, > 0.2 μm) reacted during the sampling period.
Picoplankton made up approximately 13% of the total biomass, during the observed time period, at the more oceanic station. The picoplankton fraction contributed up to 16% of the total biomass at the estuarine station. From this …

Mounting Sex Pheromone: A Novel Pheromone Responsible For Mate Recognition In The Ixodidae, Jgc Hamilton
Theses and Dissertations in Biomedical Sciences
Cholesterol oleate was demonstrated to be the cuticular contact sex pheromone of Dermacentor variabilis. This pheromone which has been termed the Mounting Sex Pheromone (MSP) was also demonstrated to be present on the surface of D. andersoni, Amblyomma maculatum and A. americanum. This contact sex pheromone enables males excited and attracted by 2,6-dichlorophenol to identify the female as a potential mating partner. The MSP is the second in the series of three sex pheromones guiding the hierarchy of behavioral responses which constitute tick courtship behavior. Tests with D. variabilis and D. andersoni showed that this pheromone …

Remipedes are an unusual group of troglobitic crustaceans that live exclusively in anchialine caves. Since their discovery in 1979, nine species have been described, seven of which are found in caves in the West Indies, one from the Yucatan peninsula of Mexico and one from the Canary Islands. Most of what is known about these animals has come mainly from taxonomic descriptions. Little has been published about their reproductive biology or ecology. The objectives of this dissertation were to investigate the reproductive biology and ecology of the remipedes inhabiting Sagittarius Cave on Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas.
Sagittarius Cave was chosen …
Modulation Of Macrophage Chemiluminescence By Biological Response Modifiers And Neuroendocrine Hormones, Jeffrey M. Tosk
Modulation Of Macrophage Chemiluminescence By Biological Response Modifiers And Neuroendocrine Hormones, Jeffrey M. Tosk
Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects
Neuroendocrine mediators have been shown to influence a broad spectrum of immune functions suggesting the existence of a neuroimmune regulatory axis effecting feedback control of the immune response. Most studies in support of this paradigm have employed either intact animals or immune cells derived from blood and other tissues. Under these conditions it becomes difficult to cope with numerous variables associated with the complex milieu of the immune system and the interpretation of data. An in vitro model using a murine macrophage cell line, J774, was developed to circumvent these problems. Using this model, macrophages activated by exposure to the …
