A Computerized Database For Freshwater Algae Recorded In Turkey, Bülent Şen, Mehmet Tahi̇r Alp, Feray Sönmez, Güler Aykulu, Kazim Yildiz

Turkish Journal of Botany

A computer-based database for freshwater algae recorded in Turkey has been established. The first phase of the project involved the selecting of data types available for freshwater algal species occurring in Turkey. Such data were obtained from algal studies previously carried out in various freshwater bodies of the country. Data were then standardized in accordance with "The Central Database of Turkish Herbaria". The database program Access was used for entering data, as this program recognises Turkish characters. Algal data were entered into the database in the following order: division, class, order, family, genus, species, species author, subspecies, subspecies author, variety, …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The floristic composition and phytogeographical analysis of the Gebel Elba National Park in the south-east corner of Egypt were studied using multivariate analysis techniques. Its flora was poorly documented; therefore, 5 recent expeditions between 1998 and 2004 were carried out, which resulted in the collection of 179 species that belong to 51 families. Six major wadis (sites) were investigated to cover adequately the territory of the Park (35,600 km2) and to attain as complete an inventory of its vascular flora as possible. The floristic composition and species diversity among the wadis showed variations in species richness, yet W. Yahameib was …

Ferula Parva Freyn & Bornm. (Apiaceae): A Contribution To An Enigmatic Species From Turkey, Mehmet Sağiroğlu, Hayri̇ Duman

Turkish Journal of Botany

Ferula parva Freyn & Bornm. was first collected from Central Anatolia (Turkey B5 Kayseri-Yozgat in declivibus apricis inter Kayseri et Yozgat, 1890) by Bornmüller. No specimens belonging to this species have been collected since the type and Andrasovszky specimens. When the Flora of Turkey was being prepared, Dr. H. Peşmen considered this species imperfectly known; therefore, it was not included in the keys. In the present paper, diagnostic morphological characters are discussed. In addition, its ecology, conservation status, SEM photographs of the surface of mericarps, and chromosome numbers are presented.

On The Taxonomy Of Plantaginaceae Juss. Sensu Lato: Evidence From Sem Of The Seed Coat, Azza Ahmed Shehata, Mohamed Hesham A. Loutfy

Turkish Journal of Botany

SEM of the seed coat was studied in 41 taxa of the Plantaginaceae sensu lato. The study included 31 taxa of Plantago L. and 10 taxa that were formerly assigned to the Scrophulariaceae, representing the genera Antirrhinum L., Digitalis L., Linaria Mill. and Veronica L. The obtained data were analysed by the NT sys-PC program package using the UPGMA clustering method. The study showed that Veronica possessed certain affinities to Plantago species, thus giving extra support to earlier views that Plantaginaceae sensu stricto and Scrophulariaceae sensu lato are allied through Veronica. The study also favoured the paraphyly of Plantago subgenus …

Turkish Journal of Botany

Twenty-three Plantago L. taxa belonging to 2 subgenera (Euplantago Harms and Psyllium (Juss.) Harms) were classified by numerical taxonomic methods. The classification obtained by numeric taxonomic methods was compared to that obtained by conventional methods. In general, both of the classifications agreed well, except for the section Hymenopsyllium Pilger being clustered under the subgenus Psyllium contrary to the conventional classification.

In Vitro Regeneration Of Sandal (Santalum Album L.) From Leaves, Abdul Mujib Jan 2005

In Vitro Regeneration Of Sandal (Santalum Album L.) From Leaves, Abdul Mujib

Turkish Journal of Botany

The first successful induction of adventitious shoot buds on Santalum album L. leaves is reported. De novo shoots were induced directly on leaves without any callusing stage. A leaf length of 0.5-1.5 cm only showed bud inducing potential. Bud formation occurred on both MS and WPM basal media, although, liquid media were more responsive. Among the plant growth regulators, BAP at low concentrations (0.44 and 2.22 µM) was effective in this organogenetic process but exogenous auxin application failed to illicit a similar morphogenetic response. Epiphyllous shoot formation was more pronounced on leaf lamina in which the dorsal and ventral leaf …

Turkish Journal of Botany

The photoinhibition of photosystem II in vivo by analysis of diverse components -initial rate, steady state rate and lag phase-of photosynthetic O_2 evolution curves on greening wheat seedlings after illumination by excess white light (320 W/m^2) was investigated. A sharp reduction in the initial and steady state rates and a simultaneous intense rise in the lag phase of O_2 evolution were observed under the illumination of seedlings by excess light on the lag phase of chlorophyll a biosynthesis (less than 6 h of seedling greening) in comparison with the illumination of seedlings by excess light at the stage of substantial …

During the study period, 3 centric and 41 pennate diatoms were recorded in the epipelic diatom flora of the bay. Achnanthes Bory spp., Amphora exigua W.Greg. and Navicula tripunctata (O.Müll.) Bory were dominant in terms of frequency and density. In general, the bay showed a small species diversity …

Purification And Partial Characterisation Of An Acid Lipase In Germinating Lipidbody Linseedlings, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour Jan 2005

Purification And Partial Characterisation Of An Acid Lipase In Germinating Lipidbody Linseedlings, Reda Helmy Ahmed Sammour

Turkish Journal of Botany

Electrophoretic analysis of germinating linseed proteins showed a gradual decrease in the quantity of a protein with a molecular weight of 42 kDa. This protein accumulates after 36 h of germination in synchronisation with an increase in lipase activity, and a decrease in the quantity of the total lipids. The 42 kDa subunit was found to be a lipid body membrane protein. This protein was isolated and identified by immunoprecipitation as a subunit of lipase. The linseed lipase acted on a wide range of triacylglycerols and had optimal activity at pH 4.7. The activity of the enzyme was slightly affected …

In Vitro Mass Propagation Of Cucumis Sativus L. From Nodal Segments, Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Anis Jan 2005

In Vitro Mass Propagation Of Cucumis Sativus L. From Nodal Segments, Naseem Ahmad, Mohammad Anis

Turkish Journal of Botany

An efficient reproducible protocol for the in vitro multiplication of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.), an important vegetable crop, was developed from nodal explants. Addition of casein hydrolysate to the shoot induction medium (MS + BA) significantly enhanced the number of multiple shoots or growth of the regenerants. Optimum shoot regeneration was observed on Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium containing 1.0 µM 6-benzyladenine (BA) and (200 mg/l) casein hydrolysate. Rooting of isolated in vitro raised microshoots was readily achieved with (1.0 µM) \alpha-naphthalene-acetic acid (NAA) in 1/2 MS. The plantlets thus obtained were successfully established in a greenhouse.
