Turfgrass damage has been observed from misapplications of human insect repellents. Minimal research has been conducted to determine the cause of the damage. Greenhouse research trials were initiated in November 2016 to survey various human insect repellents on turfgrass growth and recovery. Insect repellents resulted in a wide range of damage. No common trend was observed, although the research trial shows possible repellents to be used around turfgrass that will minimize turfgrass injury.

This study is an effort to determine effects of drought and traffic in turfgrasses. During a 41-day summer drought in 2015 and 2016, warm-season (C4) grasses were more affected by traffic than cool-season (C3) grasses when percent green cover and turf quality were measured. This was because the non-trafficked plots in C4 grasses maintained higher percent green cover and turf quality throughout the drought due to better drought-stress tolerance than the C3 grasses. Minimal research exists on potential clothing blemishing when athletes contact turfgrass applied with colorants. Field trials were initiated February 16, 2017, and conducted to test the effect of turfgrass colorant applications on clothing blemishing if an athlete is to come in contact with the playing surface. Turfgrass colorants will adhere to turfgrass leaf blades and do not blemish clothing. However, tested turfgrass pigments did result in significant blemishing of clothing.

A Z. japonica genotype TAES 5645 which exhibited resistance to large patch in preliminary studies conducted by our collaborators at Texas A&M University was used as a breeding parent there and crossed with 22 cold hardy zoysiagrasses, resulting in 985 progeny. These progeny were evaluated for cold hardiness and agronomic traits (establishment rate, overall quality, spring greenup, leaf texture, and genetic color) in Manhattan, KS; West Lafayette, IN; and Dallas, TX; from 2012 to 2014. This report focuses on the Manhattan, KS, results. From this work, 60 progeny were identified for further evaluation in larger plots. In fall 2016, ‘Meyer’ (42% of plot area affected) had more large patch than all zoysiagrass progeny (0 to 23%). The top-performing zoysiagrass progeny had little or no large patch present. Research efforts to improve cultivar quality include selecting for stress tolerance and disease resistance as well as finer leaf texture, a rich green color, and better sward density. Several cultivars included in the 2012 National Turfgrass Evaluation Program Tall Fescue Test performed well and showed good brown patch resistance in south central Kansas during the 2016 growing season.

Athletic field conditions have been shown to influence playability. Results of ball-roll speed studies can be used to predict success of infield hits. Field trials were conducted at Rocky Ford Turfgrass Research Center, Manhattan, KS, to determine the influence of tall fescue baseball infield mowing height on ground ball speed and batter on-base success. Mowing heights of 1, 2, and 3 inches resulted in 1.77, 2.08, and 1.88 s ground ball times, respectively.

Infrared thermometry provides accurate measurements of plant canopy temperature, which, along with basic weather variables, allows estimation of canopy stomatal conductance to water vapor flux (gc) and transpiration. Using this method we compared modeled estimates of transpiration (CONDT) with evapotranspiration (ET) measurements from nearby microlysimeters (LYSET) in tall fescue (Schedonorus arundinaceus Schreb.) turfgrass. Results indicated transpiration may be reliably estimated via calculation of gc in turfgrass.

Evapotranspiration (ET) from turfgrass can be measured directly using lysimeters (LYS), estimated from weather data using models, or approximated using atmometers. This study was conducted from 2013–2016 to determine how irrigation and N fertilization may be managed to reduce N2O emissions and enhance carbon sequestration. In this study, annual nitrous oxide (N2O) emissions were greatest in urea and the least in unfertilized (no N) among treatments. During summer, the lower irrigation treatment resulted in less N2O emitted. Water conservation is increasingly important when selecting turfgrasses. Zoysiagrass (Zoysia japonica), a C4 grass, is more drought resistant than C3 grasses. This study compared drilled planted sorghum at four seeding rates to planted sorghum at three different nitrogen (N) fertility levels at two locations in southwest Kansas (Garden City and Tribune). Long-term research shows that phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) fertilizer must be applied to optimize production of irrigated corn in western Kansas. In 2016, N applied alone increased yields 85 bu/a, whereas P applied alone increased yields only 12 bu/a. Nitrogen and P applied together increased yields up to 164 bu/a. This is 20 bu/a greater than the 10-year average, where N and P fertilization increased corn yields up to 144 bu/a. Long-term crop management practices can affect nutrient cycling and availability to crops. This study examined the long-term effects of nitrogen (N) fertilizer application (N rates of 0, 20, 40, and 60 lb N/a) and tillage intensity (conventional tillage (CT), reduced tillage (RT), and no-tillage (NT)) on soil phosphorus (P), micronutrients, and soil acidity in a dryland winter wheat (Triticum aestivum L.)–sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L.)–fallow cropping system. Long-term research trials provide an understanding of long-term effects on crop production. This long-term research studied the effect of conventional tillage (CT) and no-tillage (NT) systems. Factors of this 22-year study of corn (Zea mays L.) production also included the application of nitrogen (N) in the forms of ammonium nitrate and manure at rates of 150 lb/N/a. Corn grain yield trends during 2012 to 2016 were affected by the interaction between N source and year (P < 0.05). The interaction between tillage practices and N source and the overall interaction between the last 5 years did not yield performance (P > 0.05). Under the studied conditions the 75 lb/N/a as N fertilizer or manure achieved high corn yields.

Long-term research shows that phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N) fertilizer must be applied to optimize production of irrigated grain sorghum in western Kansas. In 2016, N applied alone increased yields 71 bu/a, whereas N and P applied together increased yields up to 93 bu/a. Averaged across the past 10 years, N and P fertilization increased sorghum yields up to 77 bu/a. In 2015 summer annual forage variety trials were conducted across Kansas near Garden City, Hays, Hutchinson, Mound Valley, and Scandia. All sites evaluated hay and silage entries, except Hutchinson, which only evaluated hay entries. Companies were able to enter varieties into any possible combinations of research sites, so not all sites had all varieties. Across the sites, a total of 30 hay varieties and 22 silage varieties were evaluated.

Corn yields were affected by tillage and nitrogen (N) side-dress options in 2016. Corn yields were 12% greater with conventional tillage than with no-till. Side-dress applications of N at V10 resulted in greater corn yield than side-dress N applications at V6.
