Fasting Diets: Are They Safe, Healthy, And Effective?, Carrie Durward, Keshele Stevens Jul 2020

Fasting Diets: Are They Safe, Healthy, And Effective?, Carrie Durward, Keshele Stevens

All Current Publications

Diets are commonly prescribed to induce weight loss and reduce the risk of many diseases. Because a standard daily calorie restriction diet is often hard to maintain, other diet alternatives such as fasting diets were created. Fasting diets have been found to be effective, though they may not be any more effective than typical diets. Before beginning a fasting diet, it is best to seek professional medical advice to assess individual risks and circumstances. This fact sheet helps readers learn more about the safety, health, and effectiveness of fasting diets.

Added Sugars: What You Need To Know, Carrie Durward, Keshele Stevens

All Current Publications

Added sugar has become a hot topic among health professionals and in the media. Based on the best available evidence, health professionals recommend that less than 10% of daily calories come from added sugar (U.S. Department of Health and Human Services [HHS] & U.S. Department of Agriculture [USDA], 2015c) in order to maintain a balanced diet with all the important nutrients. In this fact sheet, we will address why and how to limit added sugar in your diet, what it is, and where to find it.

Nitrogen Fertilizer Guide For First-Year Small Grains Following Alfalfa, Matt Yost, Collin Pound, Earl Creech, Grant Cardon, Jody Gale, Michael Pace, Boyd Kitchen, Steve Price, Kevin Heaton, Mark Nelson, Trent Wilde, Katie Russell

All Current Publications

Nitrogen (N) fertilizer is one of the most expensive crop inputs. It is an essential nutrient for most crops and often increases yield more than any other nutrient. Small grains are no exception. Alfalfa is the dominant crop in Utah in terms of area and gross sales, and as a nitrogen-fixing legume, it does not require nitrogen fertilizer. When terminated, alfalfa usually leaves a lot of nitrogen in the soil for subsequent crops. The amount of nitrogen that it supplies to following crops has been termed the “alfalfa N credit.” In many cases, this credit can be up to 300 …

Preparing And Improving Garden Soil, Katie Wagner, Melanie Stock, Larry A. Sagers

All Current Publications

A great garden starts with healthy soil. In Utah, there are unique considerations for creating and maintaining healthy soils. Native Utah soils are relatively low in organic matter. This fact sheet addresses these challenges to help gardeners transform garden soils from brutal to beautiful!

Urban Garden Soils: Testing And Management, Melanie Stock, Tiffany Maughan, Paul R. Grossl

All Current Publications

This fact sheet provides step-by-step instructions on selecting appropriate soil tests, sampling, and interpreting results. Soil tests measure plant nutrient needs and soil contamination, both important aspects of sustainable urban gardening. Although many garden centers sell home soil test kits, these tests are not recommended because they were developed outside of the Intermountain West with soils that have nearly opposite conditions. Soil tests conducted in local labs may cost more initially, but will provide results specific to Utah soils and management recommendations that balance long-term soil productivity, human health, and environmental sustainability. The Utah State University Analytical Labs (USUAL) is …

Equine Nutrition: Concentrates, Karl Hoopes, Patricia Evans, Scott Mckendrick Jul 2020

Equine Nutrition: Concentrates, Karl Hoopes, Patricia Evans, Scott Mckendrick

All Current Publications

Concentrate (grain) should be considered only as supplements to good quality hay. In general, a mature horse does not require the energy provided by concentrate-type feeds (grains/sweet feeds, pelleted feed, etc.) unless the horse is used for more than light work or in production, such as a lactating mare or a breeding stallion. Too many times horses are overfed rather than underfed. This fact sheet will help horse owners understand the digestive process and the general feeding requirements, including different grains and mixed grains, for their horses.

Calibrating Your Orchard Sprayer, Brent Black, Earl Seeley Jul 2020

Calibrating Your Orchard Sprayer, Brent Black, Earl Seeley

All Current Publications

The costs of fungicides, miticides, insecticides, foliar nutrients, wetting agents and plant growth regulators continue to increase. For a full spray program on apples, for example, the cost of spray materials alone could cost $800 to $1700 per acre per year. A poorly calibrated sprayer applying an average of 10% more material than intended, directly increases production costs by $80 to $170 per acre. Nozzles on sprayers wear out over time, and flow rates increase as nozzles wear, with worn nozzles eventually increasing flow rates by 10% or more. Financially sound management requires carefully calibrating orchard sprayers to optimize the …

Being able to pinpoint age can be of use to owners of unregistered horses or horses whose age is unknown for any reason. Many health and nutrition management decisions are directly related to age and dental wear, making it even more important for all horse owners to have a general understanding of how a horse’s mouth changes with age. From a historical perspective, up until recently when organized associations started keeping birth dates on registered horses, most horse professionals took great pride …

Alfalfa Weevil In Utah, Kaitlin Rim, Joseph Clarine, Steven Price, Ricardo Ramirez Jun 2020

Alfalfa Weevil In Utah, Kaitlin Rim, Joseph Clarine, Steven Price, Ricardo Ramirez

All Current Publications

The alfalfa weevil is a major pest throughout Utah. It is a beetle with one generation per year. Eggs hatch in the spring, and the grub-like immature weevils (larvae) feed by chewing on the alfalfa foliage. In high numbers, alfalfa weevils can cause severe damage to Utah alfalfa. In any given year, however, the weevils are few enough in number in many fields to cause only minor damage. Monitor larval populations in early spring using sweep net or stem count methods. Insecticide resistance can be reduced by spraying only when needed, properly timing sprays, and rotating between modes of action.
