Journal of Bioresource Management
Jasmine leaf webworm, Nausinoe geometralis, is a significant pest of Jasminum spp. commonly known as Jasmine plant. This plant holds a special place in Pakistan's culture; as it is declared as its national flower. N. geometralis feeds on the leaves of the jasmine plant; leaving it damaged and unattractive. Current study aimed to evaluate the efficacy of four botanical extracts (i.e. Neem, Taramira, Lemon grass, and Cactus) against N. geometralis; to explore an effective and eco-friendly method to protect the jasmine plant. Different concentrations of extracts were prepared using distilled water. Bioassays were performed on third instar larvae …

Salmonella poses a significant public health challenge due to its antibiotic resistance, zoonotic transmission, and diverse clinical manifestations. Over 60 % of human diseases are zoonotic, influenced by ecological dynamics and human activities such as land use changes, population growth, and international travel. Foodborne diseases, particularly those caused by Salmonella spp., have a substantial global impact, especially in low-income countries. Salmonella is divided into two species, Salmonella enterica and Salmonella bongori, with more than 2000 serotypes and six subspecies within S. enterica. This bacterium is highly adaptable, surviving extreme conditions such as drying, high salt concentrations, and acidic …

Impacts Of Cruciferous Extracts On The Parasitism Efficiency Of Diadegma Insulare; A Hymenopterous Parasitoid Of The Diamondback Moth, Muhammad Sajid Qureshi, Wali Muhammad, Muhammad Adnan Bodlah, Abdul Mannan Hamzah, Muhammad Saeed, Riaz Hussain
Journal of Bioresource Management
Herbivore's attack stimulates chemical production in the plants; that communicates with natural enemies (chemical communication) and urges them for help (i.e. cry-for-help phenomenon). Such chemicals play an important role to attract the parasitoids and increase the chances of host pests' encounter. Current studies were performed to observe the extracts' efficacy in order to attract the parasitoid (i.e. Diadegma insulare) and thereby increase the likelihood of encounter with the host pest (i.e. Plutella xylostella). Cruciferous cultivars' extracts were developed and applied with artificial release of parasitoids under semi-field conditions. Findings revealed that extracts had the potential to enhance the …

Dof (DNA binding with one finger) proteins constitute highly ubiquitous transcription factor gene families that are found across all plant species, playing crucial role in fruit ripening, organ development, and other activities. A comprehensive genome-wide analysis of the coffee genome uncovered 49 CaDof genes, which were described in terms of their gene structures, phylogenetic relationships, subcellular localization, gene duplication, and expression in various plant organs. In Coffea arabica, segmental duplication outnumbered tandem duplication. Expressed sequence tags were used to determine the expression of specific organs in CaDof genes. Most genes showed high expression in fruits at various stages, in …

Journal of Bioresource Management
The present study was conducted to compare the performance and behavior of Fayoumi and Rhode Island Red poultry breeds. A total of forty-two birds at 26 weeks of age, with thirty-six females and six males from each breed, were distributed into 6 groups with one male and six females each. All the experimental groups were reared in separate partitions with provisions of nests, feeders, and drinkers under proper management conditions. The results of the current study revealed that Rhode Island Red chickens showed significantly higher (P < 0.05) body weight, egg weight, daily egg production, eggshell thickness, and other quality parameters compared to Fayoumi chickens. It was also noted that Rhode Island Red chickens consumed less feed and gained heavier bodies with higher egg production than Fayoumi chickens. There was a non-significant difference in feed intake between both breeds. Rhode Island Red chickens produced eggs with better shell quality and higher breaking strength compared to Fayoumi chickens. In conclusion, the Rhode Island Red chicken breed is better in terms of body weight, egg performance, and feed efficiency compared to Fayoumi chickens.

Copper and zinc play a very important role in plant development, but exposure at higher concentrations causes severe toxic effects. Copper (Cu) is an essential element for plants as it is involved in the synthesis of ATP and CO2 assimilation, while zinc (Zn) stimulates several enzymes and is necessary for the biosynthesis of chlorophyll. The present research appraised the Cu and Zn concentrations in water, soil, forages (Trifolium repens, Cynodon dactylon, Lolium perenne, and Festuca arundinacea), milk, and hair samples of buffaloes. The samples were collected from the selected sites of Tehsil Bhalwal Punjab, Pakistan, and analyzed through an …

Urbanization influences and changes the social, economic, political, and traditionalorganization of a society. This paper examines the process and consequences of urbanization in the Jammu province of J&K India, focusing on its physical transformation and social dynamics. This study employs a descriptive research approach to investigate the multifaceted aspects of urbanization by synthesizing data from various sources, including demographic surveys, interviews, and spatial analysis. The study showed that Jammu province is gradually proceeding …

Emerging infectious diseases threaten wildlife globally. While the effects of infectious diseases on hosts with severe infections and high mortality rates often receive considerable attention, effects on hosts that persist despite infection are less frequently studied. To understand how persisting host populations change in the face of disease, we quantified changes to the capture rates of Eptesicus fuscus (big brown bats), a persisting species susceptible to infection by the invasive fungal pathogen Pseudogymnoascus destructans (Pd; causative agent for white-nose syndrome), across the eastern US using a 30-year dataset. Capture rates of male and female E. fuscus increased from preinvasion to …

Declines in biodiversity generated by anthropogenic stressors at both species and population levels can alter emergent processes instrumental to ecosystem function and resilience. As such, understanding the role of biodiversity in ecosystem function and its response to climate perturbation is increasingly important, especially in tropical systems where responses to changes in biodiversity are less predictable and more challenging to assess experimentally. Using large-scale transplant experiments conducted at five neotropical sites, we documented the impacts of changes in intraspecific and interspecific plant richness in the genus Piper on insect herbivory, insect richness, and ecosystem resilience to perturbations in water availability. We …

Flora Of The Dreat Mountains (Center Of Algeria) - Inventory, Taxonomy And Biogeography, Nabila Ouadeh, Khellaf Rebbas
Journal of Bioresource Management
Following the publication of the article on the synthaxonomic study of the Dreat forest, the aim of this inventory of the Dreat forest’s flora (semi-arid zone in central Algeria) to allow us a quantitative analysis on the basis of biogeographic parameters such as specific richness, geography of distribution, endemism and rarity. A subjective sampling was carried out between 2018 and 2021 at the level of the various formations (forest, matorral, altitude grasslands, and steppe). This analysis showed considerable species richness, estimated at around 468 taxa belonging to 278 genera and 66 families. Therophytes dominate the other living forms, according to …

The study focuses on the the experimental test of reforestation with Maesopsis eminii and Millettia drastica in the eco-climatic conditions of Kinshasa, with the aim of assessing the development and growth of the species through germination, and their behaviour in relation to the soil in the conditions of Kinshasa, with a view to proposing advice for responsible afforestation and reforestation. The results show that both species tend to reduce soil acidity. After cultivation, the pHs were 4.49 and 4.69 respectively for soils 1 and 2, compared with 3.98 for soil 0. In addition, Millettia drastica neutralises aluminium in the soil …
