Modeling Of Population Dynamics In Spatially Continuous And Heterogeneous Environments Using Partial Differential Equations, Ryan T. St. Clair Dec 2022

Modeling Of Population Dynamics In Spatially Continuous And Heterogeneous Environments Using Partial Differential Equations, Ryan T. St. Clair

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

This thesis provides an expansion of existing reaction diffusion population ecology models into patchy landscapes with greater spatial heterogeneity. The Sturm-Loiville eigenvalue problem for a heterogeneous 3 patch landscape is solved implicitly and the population growth rate and migration dynamics on such a landscape are thoroughly discussed. In addition a system of interface equations is found whose greatest solution is the dominant eigenvalue of an N-patch landscape. The results of this model agree well with previously published results and show the mathematical equivalence of two published approaches for incorporating organism behavior at habitat interfaces. Increased modeling capabilities in heterogeneous environments …

Functional Analysis Of Legionella Pneumophila Effector Protein, Shreya Neupane Dec 2022

Functional Analysis Of Legionella Pneumophila Effector Protein, Shreya Neupane

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Legionella pneumophila is a gram-negative bacterium that causes Legionnaire’s disease (a severe form of pneumonia) in humans. L. pneumophila can cause infection by utilizing its Type IV secretion system, a protein secretion system that transports proteins from the bacterial cytosol into the infected macrophage. Effectors released from the Type Iv secretion system allow L. pneumophila to create a safe environment to survive, replicate and cause infection. One such effector, RavQ, inhibits cell proliferation of mammalian HEK 293T cells and localizes to the cell’s nucleus, leading us to hypothesize that RavQ interferes with cellular activity in the nucleus. To detect its …

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 24. Wallace At 200: Potential Subjects For Student Theses, Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

The bicentennial of Alfred Russel Wallace’s birth in 2023 will likely produce a wide array of reviews of his life and work; here, we pause for a short look at some Wallace-related questions that might be adapted for student theses and dissertations. Some of the subjects treated fall in with established lines of research, while others are suggested by other Wallace interests or activities that have not been much explored.

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 23: The Jersey Devil, And Friends, Charles H. Smith Dec 2022

Alfred Russel Wallace Notes 23: The Jersey Devil, And Friends, Charles H. Smith

Faculty/Staff Personal Papers

For nearly three hundred years reports have surfaced of a purported cryptid form known as the ‘Jersey devil.’ In this work an interpretation of the goals of biogeography is given, and how this field can be related to such alleged phenomena, as well as to some of the ideas of Alfred Russel Wallace (1823-1913) that seem to find their origin in the writings of Benedict de Spinoza (1632-1677).

Exploring Stress Mindset And Perceived Stress Between College Student-Athletes And Non-Athletes, Creighton Avery, Amber M. Shipherd, Sarah Gomez, Kelly B. Renner Nov 2022

Exploring Stress Mindset And Perceived Stress Between College Student-Athletes And Non-Athletes, Creighton Avery, Amber M. Shipherd, Sarah Gomez, Kelly B. Renner

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(5): 1554-1562, 2022. One’s beliefs about the nature of stress (e.g., stress mindset) play a large role in the extent to which one experiences the detrimental or beneficial outcomes of stress. Stress mindset has been explored in college students, but there is limited research on stress mindsets in student-athletes. Sport can serve as a buffer to the negative impacts of stress for some student-athletes; however, pressures associated with sport participation increase stress in other student-athletes. Therefore, the purpose was to examine potential differences in stress mindset and perceived stress between non-athletes and college student-athletes. We …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(3): 1514-1527, 2022. While neuromuscular fatigability has been previously characterized after running and cycling, no study has investigated an ultra-endurance upper body task. In preparation for a world record attempt, three pacing strategies to perform 1980 pull-ups in 6 hrs were compared during independent sessions: fast pace, long recovery (FL), fast pace, multiple short recoveries (FMS), and slow pace, no recovery (SN). Elbow flexion maximal voluntary contraction (MVC) force, grip strength, peripheral fatigue, and biceps brachii electromyography were quantified every 330 pull-ups and during recovery, alongside heart rate, perceived effort, and arm muscle pain. The Triple Step In Recreational Swing Dancers: A Kinematic Analysis, Meredith D. Wells, Feng Yang Nov 2022

The Triple Step In Recreational Swing Dancers: A Kinematic Analysis, Meredith D. Wells, Feng Yang

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(1): 1492-1505, 2022. Swing dancing is gaining popularity, yet our biomechanical understanding of swing dance remains poor, creating barriers to the development of training protocols and evaluation of performances. This study aimed to determine whether dancing with or without a partner affects the lower extremity kinematics of the triple step, and if the kinematics differ among the three steps of the dance element. Eight recreational swing dancers completed three sets of rightward triple steps with and without a partner. The angles in the sagittal, frontal and transverse planes were determined for bilateral lower limb joints …

Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the effects of both brain stimulation and focus of attention on the outcome performance, peak force, lower extremity joint kinematics, and projection angle of a standing long jump. Forty-one participants were assigned to either the brain stimulation group or placebo group via a counterbalance design based on leg length and jump …

Changes In Fitness-Fatness Index Following A Personalized, Community-Based Exercise Program In Physically Inactive Adults: A Randomised Controlled Trial, Abbey M. Jones, Lance C. Dalleck, Ryan M. Weatherwax, Joyce S. Ramos

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(4): 1418-1429, 2022. Fitness-fatness index (FFI) is used to identify those at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular events. It is measured as the ratio between an individual’s cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) and waist-to-height ratio. Studies suggest that CRF and waist-to-height ratio are modifiable and can be improved by exercise. However, there is limited evidence surrounding a personalized approach to exercise prescription. This study investigated the impact of a 12-week personalized exercise program on FFI among sedentary individuals. It was hypothesized that the intervention would be effective in improving FFI in this cohort. …

International Journal of Exercise Science

International Journal of Exercise Science 15(2): 1366-1380, 2022. Hericium erinaceus (HE), also known as Lion’s Mane mushroom, has been found to enhance cognition and metabolic flexibility in various animal models. To date however, only four studies exist in humans and none have evaluated the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility or cognitive performance. A single-blind, placebo controlled, parallel-longitudinal study was used to determine the effects of HE on markers of metabolic flexibility and cognition. Twenty-four participants completed a graded exercise test on a cycle ergometer to analyze substrate oxidation rates and markers of cardiorespiratory fitness. Additionally, two dual-task …
