Fire Reterdant Chemicals Affecting Combustion Resistance Of Wood, Yalçin Örs, Abdullah Sönmez, Burhanetti̇n Uysal

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Wood is an important material used in construction elements. However since it can be affected by biotic and abiotic deteriorating agents, it should be treated with chemical impregnating materials prior to use. In this study, the effects of water-soluble impregnating chemicals on the combustion resistance of wood was investigated. For this purpose, panels were prepared with oriental beech wood (Fagus orientalis L.) and pine wood (Pinus silvestris L.), which are widely used in industry. These panels were impregnated with potassium nitrate (KNO_3), zinc sulfate (Zn SO_4), sodium tetra borate (Na_2 B_4 O_7), sodium sulfate (Na_2 SO_4) and copper sulfate (Cu_2SO_4). …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Using eight barley cultivars field experiments were carried out in Eskişehir, from 1991 through 1994. Water consumption and dry mater yield of genotypes were studied. Also, the yields and yield components as well as their relationship with dry matter production in different growing periods were studied. There was no significant difference among evapotranspiration of genotypes. The Water Use Efficiency (WUE) varied with year. Mean annual WUE of genotypes varied from 3.6 to 4.75 kg / da^-1 mm^-1 for biological yield, and from 1.08 to 1.45 kg / da^-1 mm^-1 for grain yield. Total dry-matter production throughout the growing season and …

Investigation On Changes In Physical And Chemical Properties Of Palm Kernel Oil During Hydrogenation, İhsan Karabulut, Muammer Kayahan

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Palm kernel oil was hydrogenated discontinuously for a period of 100 min at 165°C and 2,5 atm in the presence of nickel catalyst (%0,18). The changes in iodine number, fatty acid composition, trans fatty acid content and solid fat content during the hydrogenation were investigated for samples taken at 10 min intervals. According to the findings, while iodine number was gradually decreased during the reaction, trans fatty acid content increased significantly. Reaction conditions had increased effect on stearic acid formation from monoens. Trans fatty acid and total saturated fatty acid amounts increased proportionally with increase in SFC values.

Investigation Of Optimum Tillage Depth For Sunflower In Crop Rotation Under Central Anatolian Conditions, Yaşar Murat Çeli̇k, İlhami̇ Ünver

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Optimum tillage depth for sunflower after wheat was studied on Brown soils at two locations in Central Anatolia. The experiments were constituted as split randomized blocks with three replications, the treatments were 9-11, 14-16, 19-21 and 24-26 cm tillage depths. Weeds were permitted for growing in the half of every plot in order to test their adverse effect on sunflower yield. Optimum tillage depth under the research conditions was 14-16 cm from the points of economy and yield. Weed infestation significantly decreased the sunflower yield.

The Acidity Of Important Beech And Oak Species, Mualla Balaban, Güneş Uçar, Ethem Uğur

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The corrosion of metals in contact with wood, discoloration of wood itself, undesirable effects on wood preservatives and the curing of the synthetic resins especially glues in fiberboards, particleboards and some other effects could be traced back to the acidity of wood. Thus, this phenomenon is of a great importance in the wood utilization. In this study, two important industrial wood species , Quercus frainetto and Fagus sylvatica grown in Belgrad Forest in Turkey were investigated with respect to free, bound and total acidity of wood. Cold and hot water extracts were taken to determine the free and bound acidity …

Tuber yield data were analysed with the AMMI (Additive Main Effects and Multiplicative Interaction) statistical model. The results showed that the January 30, February 10 and March 20 planting times had …

Effect Of Subsequent Simulated Rainfalls On Runoff And Erosion, Günay Erpul, Mustafa R. Çanga Jan 1999

Effect Of Subsequent Simulated Rainfalls On Runoff And Erosion, Günay Erpul, Mustafa R. Çanga

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Hydraulic properties of soils and soil erodibility are expected to vary after rainfall because of the impact energy of raindrops. Resistance both to rainfall detachment and to runoff detachment might differ after rainfall, and temporal changes in soil erodibility take place. The main objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of subsequent rainfalls (namely the 2nd rainfall) on runoff and erosion, especially sheet and splash erosion. Forty rainfall events in laboratory condition were conducted on Kule clay loam and Musaagili silt loam. Two consecutive rainfalls at an intensity of 60 mm h -1 were applied to soil trays …

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, effects of different densities of Russian knapweed (Acroptilon repens (L.) DC) and butter cup (Ranunculus damascenus Boiss and Gaill) on yield and yield components of winter wheat were researched in Van. It was determinated that, increasing densities of A. repens have decreased number of spike, grain, straw and total yield of wheat. But, increasing densities of R. damascenus have not been effective on yield and yield components because of being small constitution and having short growing period. Ten plants per m^2 of A. repens reduced grain and straw yields respectively 24.3 and 19%. These amounts are over …

The Relationships Between Penetration Resistance And Certain Soil Properties, Cevdet Şeker

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

The purpose of this study was to determine the relationships between penetration resistance and certain soil properties, and to develop regression equations based on these relationships for predicting penetration resistance. Field studies were conducted on four different Entisol soils in plains in the Konya regions. Below 0.2 \mum, pore-size distribution was found to be positively relatd to soil penetration resistanca and bulk density. Above 50 \mum, pro-size distribution was found to be negatively related to soil penetration resistance and total porosity.
