The Effect Of Hydrogenation On Some Chemical Properties Of Soybean Oil, Muammer Kayahan, Azi̇z Teki̇n, İssa Javi̇di̇pour, Mehmet Küçük, Hülya Karabacak
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
Some changes occurring in soybean oil hydrogenated using Ni catalyst in a batch reactor at 220°C and 2.5 atm H_2 pressure were monitored. For this aim, iodine number, fatty acid composition, conjugated fatty acid and trans fatty acid contents were determined on samples taken at different intervals of the reaction. Iodine number had a regular decrease during the reaction, on the other hand, conjugated fatty acid content increased till 30 th. minute and then decreased permanently. There was an absolute selective conditions up to 60 th. minute of hydrogenation. Then, selectivity raito decreased gradually, which was calculated as 49.33 at …

The Genesis Of Smectite And Palygorskite On Harran Plain's Soil Series, Kadi̇r Yilmaz
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This investigation was conducted for the determination of the sources of palygorskite and smectite minerals found widely in large proportions in soil series on Harran Plain. Various methods were used for isolating semectite and palygorskite minerals. While palygorskite and smectite were not succesfully separated soil samples, separation was achieved in Fatik limestone residue. While the length of palygorskite minerals was found to be 1.00-2.75 \mum and the width 0.10-0.20 \mum in limestone, the length and width of palygorskite minerals were found to be about 0.20-0.75 \mum and 0.075\mum, respectively, in soil samples. While Fatik limestone residue had a strong endothermic …

Determination Of The Alkalinity Of Tokat-Kazova Soils, Kadi̇r Saltali, M. Rifat Deri̇ci̇
Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry
This research was conducted in order to determine the alkalinity of soils in Kazova and the Kg values which are an indicator of alkalinity. Twenty-four soil profiles were studied for this purpose. None of these profiles exhibited any alkalinity problem for 0-15 cm soil depths (except profile A_3). However, 3 profiles exhibited an alkalinity problem for 15-30 cm, 12 profiles for 30-60 cm, 11 profiles for 60-90 cm, and 6 profiles for 90-120 cm depths. The ESP values calculated for 30-60 cm were highest, followed by those for 60-90, 90-120, 15-30, 0-15 cm in decreasing order. The Gapon Coefficient (Kg), …

In recent years, models of the greenhouse environment and of crops have been used to determine optimal strategies for environment control in regions where new greenhouse industries are developing. In this study, the tomato crop growth model TOMGRO, which was developed to describe the growth and yield of an indeterminate tomato variety under controlled conditions of greenhouse cultivation in Israel, was evaluated under Çukurova conditions. The input parameters for the model were observed from a greenhouse experiment conducted during 1995-1996 growing season. There was good agreement between the simulated and observed number of nodes. The simulated number of leaves and …

Turkish Journal of Botany
Possible variations in the morphology, anatomy, ecology and phenology of Origanum onites L. ( Lamiaceae/Labitae) in rela-tion to altitudinal variations was studied together with the differences in etheric oil content. A decrease in the stem and lower leaf lengths was observed compared with an increase in the cortical area and vascular tissues in parallel with altitudinal increases. The number and size of stomata also varied with this factor. Etheric oil content was found to be different in relation to altitude.

Vicia sativa L. subsp. incisa (Bieb.) Arc. var. incisa was investigated karyologically (chromosome number, karyotype and mitotic division). The chromosome number of Vicia sativa subsp. incisa var. incisa was counted for the first time and it was found to be 2n=14. In the karyotype, 1 submedian (SM) and 6 subterminal (ST) chromosome pairs were found, in one of which a SAT-chromosome was detected. A satellite was on the short arm of the 3rd chromosome pair. In the cells of the root tips, the course of mitosis was regular. The presence of subsp. incisa var. incisa in the flora of Turkey …

Turkish Journal of Botany
The leaves of Elaeagnus angustifolia L. (Elaeagnaceae) were tested as a possible biomonitor of heavy metal pollution in Kayseri. Concentration of Pb, Cd and Zn were determined in unwashed and washed leaves and soils. Differences between the unwashed and washed samples varied according to the metal pollutant levels. Significant correlations were obtained between the heavy metal concentrations in surface soil and washed leaf samples. E. angustifoliawas found to be a useful biomonitor of the heavy metals investigated.

The highest levels of NRA were found for all species in the leaves. Significant differences were determined between the samples collected from different altıtudes. Despite the NRA is the highest in V. olympicum Boiss., it is the lowest in V. lagurus Fisch. & Mey. Furthermore the correlation between NRA values in aboveground …

Top Senescence In Sternbergia Lutea(L.) Ker-Gawl. Ex Sprengel And Narcissus Tazettal. Subsp. Tazetta, Hamdi̇ Güray Kutbay
Turkish Journal of Botany
Sternbergia lutea (L.) Ker-Gawl. ex Sprengel and Narcissus tazetta L. subsp. tazetta are two autumnal geophytes belonging to Amaryllidaceae. N. tazetta subsp. tazetta consist of some vomitory alkaloids. S. lutea has also important alkaloids too. In this study nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P) and potassium (K) analysis were carried out in two taxa during vegetative and generative growth phases and the results belonging to vegetative and generative growth phases were compared with each other. As a result of these analysis macroelement concentrations are higher during generative growth phase in under ground parts due to "top senescence".

Evaluation Of Various Sunflower ( Helianthus Annuus L.) Genotypes For Agrobacterium Tumefaciens-Mediated Gene Transfer, Ekrem Gürel, Kemal Kazan
Turkish Journal of Botany
In this work, 10 sunflower ( Helianthus annuus L.) genotypes were evaluated for their suitability for Agrobacterium tumefaciens-mediated gene transfer based on detection of a reported gene expression (GUS). A number of factors including the type of shoot-tip explant (split vs. intact), bacterial strain/binary vector combinations and wounding intact shoot-tips by particle bombardment were examined. Genotypes showed significant differences in their transformation efficiencies ranging from 0.0 to 82.7% GUS positive explants, hybrid genotypes being more responsive to Agrobacterium infection than inbred lines. Use of split shoot-tip explants did not increase the transformation efficiency over intact explants but the AGL-1/pKIWI strain/vector …
