The Effect Of The Duration Of Alkali Treatment On The Solubility Of Polyoses, Mualla Balaban, Güneş Uçar Jan 1999

The Effect Of The Duration Of Alkali Treatment On The Solubility Of Polyoses, Mualla Balaban, Güneş Uçar

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Holocelluloses from the wood of pine and oak species growing naturally in Turkey were extracted with 5% KOH solution under specified conditions, and soluble polyoses and lignin were examined. The extractions of both pine and oak wood holocelluloses followed the mechanism of second order reaction. While the glucomannan of pine was poorly dissolvable during the extraction, xylan, the main polyose of hardwoods, was removed very efficiently upto almost 90 %. The solubility of xylane also obeyed the some kinehes. By the equation [ A ] 1- n - [ A 0 ] 1-n = ( n-1) kt, where n=2, for …

Use Of Peak Discharges In Flood Frequency Analyses, Fati̇h Topaloğlu, Ali̇ Yücel, Kazim Tülücü, Mahmut Çeti̇n

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Hydrological data such as daily, monthly, and yearly peak discharge rates, ... etc., are being used in flood frequency analyses. Because the phenomena have inherent random character, the value to be observed in the future can only be determined by probabilistical and statistical laws. This kind of data should show independent, homogeneous and random behavior so that it can be used in the simulation and frequency analyses. In this study, initial stage studies needed to be done and some simple basic statistical analysis techniques have been examined so that observed discharge data in an example river basin could be used …

In this study, some cytological characters of orchardgrass were examined naturally growing in Erzurum. Plants assessed for their chromosome number were tetraploid (2n=28). In metaphase I stage the most prevalent pairing was bivalents (avg. 8.37). This was followed by quadrivalent (avg. 2.81), univalent (avg. 0.04) and trivalent (avg. 0.015) pairings. All combinations of bivalents and quadrivalents were recorded. In most of anaphase l cells examined chromosomes distribution to poles were even (14: l4), however some cells had laggings and bridges. In addition, 95. 17% of observed tetrads had no micronucleus.

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

In this study, interesterification which has been used in developed countries for years and tried in Turkey recently, was applied to a sunflower oil and beef tallow blend (80:20). 25 sample fats were obtained by applying interestification at different temperatures and times by adding 0.3% sodium methoxide. The changes in the tocopherols and sterols of these fats were investigated. It was determined that the reaction was completed at 70°C in 45 minites and at higher temperatures and longer times using lipase hydrolysis. In conclusion tocopherols and sterols were esterified more quickly as time and temperature increased. Therefore, they were more …

A Study On The Relationship Of Yield With Stability In Lentil, Meti̇n Altinbaş, Bahatti̇n Tanyolaç

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Two lentil ( Lens culinaris medic. ) populations, one of them were of large-seeded genotypes and other one were small-seeded genotypes, were tested at one location in 1990 and at two locations in the years of 1991 and 1992 and some stability statistics were estimated for grain yield. The relationship between yield and stability were studied in both populations using the simple correlations among mean yields and six stability parameters. The significant correlations between mean yield and stability statistics (b, r^2, s^2_d, W^2, \sigma^2) except S^2 occurred in large-seeded genotypes, while all stability parameters were not significantly correlated with mean …

Autocatalyzed Ethanol-Water Pulping Of Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Straw, Hüseyi̇n Kirci, Mehmet Akgül

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

This study aimed possibility of organosolv pulp production by adding to the pulping liquor without any inorganic catalyzes from the wheat straw which is known as an important raw-material for pulp production in Turkey. To obtain optimum pulping conditions ethanol ratio to pulping liquor, temperature and cooking time at maximum temperature were changed systematically and 18 pulping trial were made. The results showed that the pulping temperature at 170ºC was critical for delignification and fiber liberation. Under the limit of 170ºC sufficient delignification and chemical defibration were not observed. However, fast fiber liberation occured by applying 180-190ºC pulping temperatures. Increasing …

Turkish Journal of Veterinary & Animal Sciences

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of outbreaks of human listeriosis and contaminated foods have been considered to be a potential source of infection. In this study, a total of 100 minced beef samples were obtained from different butchers and supermarkets in Ankara and examined for the presence and degree of contamination with Listeria species. The minced beef samples were collected in aseptic conditions and transported to the laboratory in cold storage. The method suggested by USDA - FSIS was used for the isolation and identification of Listeria spp. In addition, the degree of contamination …

Biodegradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, İsmai̇l Demi̇r, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ Jan 1999

Biodegradation Of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons, İsmai̇l Demi̇r, Zi̇hni̇ Demi̇rbağ

Turkish Journal of Biology

Polycylic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), such as petroleum and petroleum derivatives, are widespread organic pollutants entering the environment, chiefly, through oil spills and incomplete combustion of fossil fuels. Since most PAHs are persist in the environment for a long period of time and bioaccumulate, they cause environmental pollution and effect biological equilibrium dramatically. Biodegradation of some PAHs by microorganisms has been biochemically and genetically investigated. Gene locations for some of these pathways are frequently found in exrachromosomal elements. Determination, isolation and characterization of microorganisms which participate in the bidegradation of PAHs have great significance in the decontamination of the environment in …

Effect Of Dietary Fatty Acids And Starvation On The Fatty Acidcomposition In The Muscle Tissue Of Cyprinion Macrostomusheckel, 1843, M. Ali̇ Akpinar

Turkish Journal of Biology

Variations in the fatty acids compositions of muscle tissue, due to starving and feeding Cyprinion macrostomus (Heckel, 1843) at 35 and 24°C which naturally lives at 35±0.5°C in the Kan-gal Thermal Spring (Sivas) were investigated. No qualitative variation took place in the fatty acid composition of the fish which were fed and star-ved at 35°C. As far as the fish which were fed and starved at 24°C were concerned, it has determi-ned that docosapentaenoic acid (C22:5) and docosahexaenoic acid (C22:6), which are not found in fo-od could be synthesized and linoleic acid (C18:2) percentage was drastically decreased. According to the …
