Oil palm production is expanding in traditional farming and forested areas, especially in West and Central Africa around the Congo Forest Basin and mostly characterized by declining yields and yield gaps. Due to typically non-binding land access, independent producers tend to prioritize extensification over intensification, which has negative environmental consequences. Sustainable intensification (SI) of smallholder production is a guiding paradigm that aims to increase yields while minimizing negative environmental impacts. In this study, we examine the relationship between producer organizations (POs), sustainable intensification practices (SIPs), namely mulching and intercropping, and oil palm yields in Cameroon. We estimate actual and counterfactual …

Over A Century Of Global Decline In The Growth Performance Of Marine Fishes, Helen F. Yan, Hannah V. Watkins, Alexandre C. Siqueira, David R. Bellwood
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Human-driven pressures are causing large-scale changes in the ecologies and life histories of fishes. Growth performance is a composite life-history trait that captures the trade-off between two fundamental traits: growth and body size. Here, we assess the impacts of fishing and temperature on the growth performance of marine teleost fishes globally over the last century. Using 7683 growth curves encompassing 1479 species, we find a global pattern of decline in growth performance from 1908 onwards, with the greatest declines in commercially valuable fishes. Indeed, managed fisheries experienced a 9% decline in growth performance over the last century, which can equate …

Killer whales (Orcinus orca) are cosmopolitan apex predators that interact with numerous species, including sharks, skates, and rays (subclass Elasmobranchii). Interactions between killer whales and elasmobranchs have garnered attention from the scientific community, but the dynamics of these events are poorly understood, as interactions are often challenging to observe. In this study, we collated imagery of interactions between killer whales and elasmobranchs to create the first image-based repository of interspecific interactions between marine predators. A total of 320 photos and videos from 82 unique interactions were collected from 12 countries. A minimum of 18 elasmobranch species across 16 genera were …

Rapid urbanization, land degradation, and climate variability are increasingly constraining food production, especially in densely populated urban regions. Vertical farming (VF), which grows crops in stacked layers under controlled conditions, is gaining recognition as a potential solution for sustainable urban agriculture. However, high energy requirements and questions surrounding long-term resource efficiency continue to challenge its scalability and environmental viability. This review explores the potential of smart vertical farming (SVF) systems, enhanced by the Internet of Things (IoT), wireless sensor networks (WSNs), and hybrid green energy-harvesting systems such as photovoltaic (PV) and thermoelectric (TE) technologies. This research analyzes how real-time data-driven …

Background: Oats (Avena sativa L.) are a rapidly expanding ingredient in plant-based beverages, snacks and fermented products, where texture, flavour, aroma and colour shape consumer acceptance. A comparatively high lipid content (2–10% w/w) reduces milling efficiency and predisposes products to oxidative rancidity, while textural variation, bitterness and colour instability further constrain product development. The molecular basis for these processing and sensory challenges lies in the globulin-dominant grain proteome.
Scope and approach: This review synthesises advances in liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) proteomics to quantitatively profile the four protein groups shaping oat sensory quality: storage, grain softness-related, lipid-associated, and metabolic and …

Seagrass meadows store sedimentary carbon and nitrogen and thus play an important role in climate change mitigation and nutrient retention globally. Here we reconstruct the impact of land-use and coastal land uplift on millennial–scale seagrass (Zostera marina) blue carbon and nitrogen accumulation in the Baltic Sea based on a multiproxy paleoreconstruction approach. We show that increased landscape clearance resulted in higher terrestrial runoff and increased accumulation of carbon and nitrogen, whereas land uplift led to hydrodynamically sheltered environments facilitating seagrass colonization, occurring 1700 and > 4000 years ago. The establishment of the seagrass meadows resulted in enhancement of the quality of …

Mosquito-borne diseases such as malaria, dengue, chikungunya, Zika, and yellow fever pose a growing global health threat, worsened by resistance to synthetic pesticides. This study evaluated insect oils from Schistocerca gregaria, Ruspolia differens, and Macrotermes spp. as adjuvants in plant-based mosquito repellents. The formulations were tested for complete protection time (CPT) against Anopheles gambiae, Aedes aegypti, and Culex quinquefasciatus, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from treated volunteers were analyzed. Incorporating insect oils doubled CPT compared to essential oils alone. The most effective blend of Macrotermes oil with Cymbopogon nardus (1:1) achieved CPTs of 3.50 h for An. gambiae, 2.56 …

Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) faces chronic food insecurity despite possessing approximately 60% of the world’s uncultivated arable land. Field trials generate evidence but are costly and insufficiently scaled to address accelerating climate and demographic pressures. Digital twin (DT) technology, defined as the continuous, bidirectional virtual replication of physical systems using real-time data, supports monitoring, modelling, and optimisation of agrifood systems. To our knowledge, however, no published synthesis has examined DT agriculture research through the lens of SSA food systems or smallholder farming realities. A PRISMA-compliant systematic review was conducted across bibliographic databases using a pre-defined Boolean search and adapted PICOS eligibility …

Climate Change Impacts On Fish-Related Ecosystem Services: Synthesis, Network Analysis, And Strategic Pathways For Coordinated Adaptation, Ebenezer Afrifa-Yamoah, Awuah-Mensah, Stephen Bradshaw, Ute Mueller
Research outputs 2022 to 2026
Climate change is rapidly disrupting fish-related ecosystem services that underpin global food security, economic livelihoods, and cultural identity across both marine and freshwater systems. While impacts are increasingly recognised, disciplinary fragmentation has hindered integrated understanding of how climate-driven changes in fish populations affect ecosystem service delivery. This review makes two integrated contributions: a hierarchical synthesis tracing causal pathways from physical climate drivers through biological and ecological responses to socioeconomic outcomes, and a qualitative network analysis that maps the interconnections, implementation readiness, and strategic sequencing of seven major adaptation strategies. Ocean warming, acidification, deoxygenation, and their increasingly frequent co-occurrence as compound …

Egg production is a critical economic indicator in the Australian poultry industry, particularly for Ross breeder broilers. This study aims to evaluate and determine the most accurate mathematical model for representing the egg production curve of Ross breeders at Baiada Farm, South Australia. Data from a 34-week production cycle (week 24 to 57) were analyzed using four polynomial regression models: quadratic, cubic, quartic, and quintic. The parameters evaluated include the rate of increase toward peak production, the persistence after the peak, and the coefficient of determination (R2) to measure model accuracy. Preliminary observations show that Ross breeders exhibit a sharp …

Eggs are a key source of animal protein for the Indonesian population, as they are relatively inexpensive and accessible even for low-income families. The stability of egg production is important for national food security. Access to credit is crucial for continuity in poultry production and can help farmers sustain their operations through efficient farm management. The study aims to examine the factors influencing farmers' decisions to access credit and to evaluate the estimated association between credit and technical efficiency using 2014 Livestock Farm Household Survey data, complemented by provincial producer-price statistics for May 2013–April 2014. Credit was positively associated with …

The laying hen sector continues to expand in response to increasing demand for animal protein; however, productivity remains sensitive to environmental conditions, particularly temperature fluctuations that affect production stability. The housing system represents a key management factor influencing farm performance. This study aims to compare production efficiency, financial performance, and business risk between closed-house and open-house laying hen systems. A comparative case study approach was applied to two commercial farms in Bayat District, Klaten Regency, representing each housing system. Data were analyzed using feed conversion ratio (FCR) and mortality rate for production efficiency, cost–revenue analysis, R/C ratio, and return on …

Transboundary fishery management and the intertwined conservation of critically endangered species represent significant governance challenges that require ongoing inter-organizational communication, collaboration, and collective action to achieve shared objectives. Previous research suggests that inter-organizational collaborative performance depends heavily on different dimensions of trust and complementary control mechanisms to mitigate the perceived risks of collaborating and enable the reciprocal sharing of resources and the coordination of activities. However, it is unclear how proposed relationships between trust, risk, and control are shaped by disruptions to established transboundary management networks. This study presents the results of survey research conducted in the Gulf of Maine …

Our ability to develop effective conservation strategies for rare species is impeded by limited knowledge of their distributions, natural histories, and environmental threats. The Puerto Rican Oriole (Icterus portoricensis) is an endemic species on the island of Puerto Rico and is currently considered to be data-deficient by the Puerto Rican government, indicating that not enough is known about this species to properly assess the level of conservation priority. Males and females sing different songs, and only males sing during the dawn chorus. This unusual sex-specific separation suggests that male and female Puerto Rican Orioles may be using their songs for …

The pesticide p,p'-DDT (DDT) and its analogs (p,p'-DDD, o,p'-DDD, and p,p'-DDE) inhibit the binding of dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to the androgen receptor (AR) and estradiol (E2) to the estrogen receptor (ERα) ligand-binding domains (LBDs), as previously reported. In this study, we introduce assays to measure the release of receptor-bound steroids. These compounds induced the release of DHT from the AR LBD and E2 from the ERα LBD. These findings suggest that DDT and its analogs may interact with a surface site on the LBD, thereby allosterically disrupting steroid binding. One potential site is binding function 3 (BF3). To explore this possibility, …

Septoria nodorum blotch (SNB) is an economically important fungal disease of wheat caused by Parastagonospora nodorum. It is primarily controlled by the breeding of resistant wheat cultivars, but experience over the last 50 years shows that new pathogen populations soon evolve that are more virulent on the current popular cultivars. In this study, we assembled a panel of 360 P. nodorum isolates. The collection resolved into eight subpopulations. One core and seven transient populations were found possessing contrasting characters in term of spatial and temporal distribution, mating-type, effector haplotypes and patterns of intact and degraded copies of a Tc-1 mariner …
