A careful analysis of the paper entitiled A metabolic diversion in the upstream thiol cascade of cysteine-deficient lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) mutants induces arsenate tolerance by modulating downstream antioxidant defense published in Turk J Bot 2016 (4) has led to conclusion that there exist some modification on the pictures used. Therefore Editorial Board of Turkish Journal of Botany decided to retract this article.

Two new Achillea species, Achillea adenii Aytaç & M.Ekici and Achillea baltai H.Duman & Aytaç sp. nov. of sect. Santolinoidea DC. (Asteraceae), are described and illustrated as new species. A. adenii grows at Babadağ in Muğla Province (southwestern Anatolia), while A. baltai grows at Aladağlar in Niğde Province. Diagnostic morphological characters, which are useful in discriminating the two new species from their close relatives, A. sintenisii Hub.-Mor., A. sipikorensis Hausskn. & Bornm., and A. armenorum Boiss. & Hausskn., are presented. Muscari elmasii Yıldırım (Asparagaceae) is described as a new species to science. It is endemic to the western Anatolia region of Turkey. M. elmasii is known from a single locality in Muğla Province. It is related to M. weissii and M. massayamum by morphological features and shows some similarities in terms of morphological characters and the same distribution area to M. mirum. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed and compared with those of related taxa. Bellevalia vuralii B.Şahin & Aslan is described as a new species of Bellevalia from southeast Turkey. As well as its morphological characteristics and classification with regards to sections, its description, ecology, and relationship with related species are presented and discussed. The somatic chromosome number of these species was defined to be 2n = 8.

Prospero cudidaghense Fırat & Yıldırım (Asparagaceae) is described as a species new to science based on morphological studies. It is endemic to the eastern Anatolian region of Turkey. P. cudidaghense is known from a single locality on Cudi Mountain, located in Şırnak Province. It is an isolated taxon of the genus Prospero. It is related to P. autumnale and P. seisumsianum. Diagnostic morphological characters are discussed and compared with those of related taxa. It can be easily distinguished from all taxa in the genus Prospero by its spring flowering time, synanthous leaves, and chasmophytic habit.

Herein a new species, Alyssum amasianum, is described and illustrated from North Anatolia. The new species is very similar to A. hirsutum subsp. caespitosum but differs in the shape and indumentum of leaves, trichome type of the fruits, and margin of the seeds. The ecology, biogeography, and conservation status of the new species are discussed. The leaf, fruit, and seed surface micromorphology of A. amasianum, A. hirsutum subsp. caespitosum, A. hirsutum subsp. hirsutum, A. strigosum subsp. strigosum, and A. xanthocarpum were also examined by scanning electron microscope.

Synopsis Of The Sect. Hymenocoleus, Sect. Hymenostegis, And Sect. Macrophyllium Belonging To Astragalus (Fabaceae) In Turkey, Seher Karaman Erkul, Zeki̇ Aytaç, Murat Eki̇ci̇

A synopsis of the sect. Hymenocoleus Bunge, sect. Hymenostegis Bunge, and sect. Macrophyllium Boiss. belonging to Astragalus L. in Turkey is given based on a revisional study carried out in Turkey. As a result of this study, an account of 19 species including keys and general distribution as well as their conservation status in Turkey is given. It is determined that A. narmanicus Karaman & Aytaç is new to science and A. expetitus Maassoumi, A. pereshkhoranicus Maassoumi & F.Ghahrem., and A. marivanensis Maassoumi & Podlech do not exist in Turkey. Additionally, the name of the sect. Hymenocoleus is preserved.

Lepiota lahorensis sp. nov. is described from Lahore, Pakistan. Its characterizing features are pinkish brown pileus with dark brown furfuraceous scales, oblong to ellipsoid spores, clavate cheilocystidia, and pileus covering made up of trichodermal elements without shorter elements at their base. The phylogenetic analysis based on nuclear ribosomal internal transcribed spacer sequence shows its unique position in sect. Ovisporae.

In a literature search, the presence of Haematococcus in phytoplankton communities and its biogeography were investigated. Haematococcus, although showing a wide biogeographical distribution, has been rarely found in phytoplankton communities. Simultaneously, the colonization potential of air-dispersed Haematococcus in ephemeral waters and its interactions with coexisting phytoplankton taxa were examined by microscopy and molecular methods. Haematococcus was a successful colonist, appearing among the first taxa in the experimental containers. According to principal component analysis, Haematococcus growth rate was negatively correlated with the abundance and species richness of the other autotrophs. The ongoing revision of the genus Poa in Turkey has resulted in two new Poa records for the Flora of Turkey as Poa pratensis subsp. irrigata (Lindm.) H. Lindb. and Poa eigii Feinbrun. In addition, the presence of Poa palustris L. is confirmed. A brief discussion and an illustration for each taxon are provided.

LEAFY (LFY), APETALA1 (AP1), and APETALA2 (AP2) genes encode three different transcription factors that control and regulate flower initiation and development in Arabidopsis. By using 3'- and 5'-RACE analysis, we isolated and sequentially characterized TtLFY (a LEAFY-like gene), TtAP1 (a MADS-box-like gene), and TtAP2 (an AP2/ERBF-like gene) in Thermopsis turcica, an unusual endemic legume species with three free carpellated flower structure. Eumusae leaf spot disease, caused by Mycosphaerella eumusae, is widely distributed in different banana growing countries in Asia and Africa, causing severe losses in yield and quality of banana. The aim of this study was to identify the differentially expressed defense responsive genes through subtractive suppression hybridization (SSH) in the Musa-M. eumusae interaction system. In this method, leaf samples collected at different intervals between 0 and 72 h postinoculation (hpi) of M. eumusae from resistant (Manoranjitham-AAA) and susceptible (Grand Naine-AAA) cultivars were subjected to cDNA-SSH library construction. We tested the phylogenetic utility of three chloroplast DNA loci, i.e. the trnL(UAA) intron, trnL(UAA)-F(GAA) intergenic spacer (IGS), and trnV(UAC) intron, across thirteen native Oxytropis species. Our objective was to determine whether any of these chloroplast DNA markers could be beneficial to figure out phylogenetic relationships among Oxytropis species. To increase the interspecific sampling, nine sequences of the trnL intron and trnL-F regions were retrieved from GenBank and included in the analyses. A set of 189 single seed lines (validation set, v-set), derived from a natural crossing crossing between 11 founder lines, were used as a different genetic background to validate markers associated with frost tolerance and leaf fatty acid composition content in the winter faba bean. These lines were evaluated in 20 replications with lattice design under three freezing temperatures (-16 °C, -18 °C, and -19 °C). Two morphological traits, regrowth after frost (REG) and area under symptom progress curve (AUSPC), were scored. Previous reports of plant regeneration of natural tetraploid T. pratense L. `Elçi' could be realized only through the apical meristem calli. In order to proceed to the production stage, other regeneration methods need to be tried. Aseptic seedlings were used for the production of somatic embryos through various 2,4-D and kinetin trials. Nonuniform external callus cells with translucent cytoplasm were observed in various developmental stages of somatic embryos. Beneath these cells, there were uniformly aligned, dark-stained embryo cells with dense cytoplasm. Plectranthus hijazensis Abdel Khalik (Lamiaceae) is described as a new species from Al-Baha Province in Saudi Arabia. Information given on the new species includes a taxonomic description and its affinity to Plectranthus asirensis L. A key to Plectranthus species of Saudi Arabia is provided, and the relationships of the species and the relevant morphological characters, particularly seed, pollen grains, trichomes, and anatomy of stem and leaf, are discussed. A distribution map of the new species and related species is provided.

The aim of this study was to identify dinoflagellate species from the Black Sea (Samsun coast) using conventional and molecular phylogenetic methods. Water samples were collected using a plankton net with 22 µm pores. Dinoflagellate cells were documented under a light microscope and were then isolated for the single-cell PCR procedure. Orchids are considered recalcitrant plants in in vitro propagation. Due to the lack of appropriate micropropagation techniques for mass production and damage to their ecological distribution posed by local gatherers, these species are threatened with extinction, including Serapias vomeracea (Burm.f.) Briq. In this research, we put forward a complete micropropagation method covering in vitro micropropagation, synthetic seed formation, germination in soil, and acclimatization to ambient conditions. To the best of our knowledge this is the first report of successful synthetic seed formation and germination of S. vomeracea. This study is a first tentative attempt to understand the driving abiotic factors affecting the distribution of 7 oak taxa and 3 hybrids in Lebanon and to elucidate differences amongst the ecological niche. A field survey was conducted all over Lebanon, where taxa at 91 points were georeferenced and inventoried. GIS tools were used to overlay attributed data for the studied parameters including biogeographic, bioclimatic, and orographic parameters. Discriminant factor analysis (DFA) was performed to evaluate the variables maximizing the variance among oak species and to point out the most discriminatory factors shaping their actual distribution. A detailed micromorphological analysis of the labellum was carried out using both light and scanning electron microscopy on 14 genera (Anacamptis, Cephalanthera, Coeloglossum, Dactylorhiza, Gymnadenia, Himantoglossum, Limodorum, Neottia, Orchis, Ophrys, Platanthera, Serapias, Spiranthes, and Steveniella) of Orchidaceae in Turkey. In the samples, various epidermal features were identified in the spur that developmentally are invaginations of the labellum and the adaxial surface of the labellum. Typical secretory cells and inclusions such as starch or calcium oxalate crystals of different sizes and shapes were found within the structure of individuals. Diversity And Ecology Of Benthic Algae In Karagöl Lake, Karagöl-Saharanational Park (Şavşat, Artvin, Turkey), Bülent Akar, Bülent Şahi̇n

Benthic algal flora of Karagöl Lake, its seasonal variation, and the physical and chemical parameters of the water were studied between October 2008 and September 2010. The algal flora consisted of 112 taxa belonging to the divisions Charophyta (41), Chlorophyta (33), Cyanobacteria (18), Euglenozoa (17), Miozoa (2), and Ochrophyta (1). Six desmid taxa found in this research are new records for the freshwater algal flora of Turkey. The qualitative dominance of benthic taxa typical of slightly alkaline and mesotrophic ecosystems was observed. The qualitative and seasonal variations in epipelic taxa analyzed were dependent on the physicochemical characteristics of the water. …

Campanula raddeana Trautv. (Campanulaceae), based on samples collected from Çıldır (A9 Ardahan), and Galatella cretica Gand. (Asteraceae), based on samples collected from Marmaris (C1 Muğla), were recorded as new findings for the Flora of Turkey. In addition, Silene samia Melzh. & Christod. (Caryophyllaceae) was confirmed in Turkey based on samples from four localities in southwest Anatolia. Detailed descriptions, locality information, and distribution maps of the cited taxa were also given in the present study.

This study investigated the correlation between endogenous levels of some signal compounds [nitric oxide (NO), salicylic acid (SA), abscisic acid (ABA)] and the antioxidant system in response to chilling stress in maize (Zea mays L.). Seedlings grown for 12 or 19 days under normal conditions (24/20 °C) were exposed to chilling stress (10/7 °C) for 2 days. The levels of NO, SA, ABA, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), superoxide anion (O2.-), and malondialdehyde (MDA) were determined in leaves of seedlings harvested on day 14 and day 21.
