Indigenous Water Justice Symposium (June 6)
Indigenous peoples throughout the world face diverse and often formidable challenges of what might be termed “water justice.” On one hand, these challenges involve issues of distributional justice that concern Indigenous communities’ relative abilities to access and use water for self-determined purposes. On the other hand, issues of procedural justice are frequently associated with water allocation and management, encompassing fundamental matters like representation within governance entities and participation in decision-making processes. Yet another realm of water justice in which disputes are commonplace relates to the persistence of, and respect afforded to, Indigenous communities’ cultural traditions and values surrounding water—more specifically, …
Better Work And Global Governance, Paul Alois
Better Work And Global Governance, Paul Alois
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation is a case study of Better Work, a program run by the International Labor Organization and the International Finance Corporation. It aims to improve working conditions and productivity in the apparel industry. The purpose of this case study is to examine the role that international organizations can play in global governance. The research presented here comes from interviews, document analysis, and an examination of quantitative data on factories’ working conditions. In-person interviews were conducted in the United States, Switzerland, Vietnam, and Indonesia; many phone interviews took place with individuals in other countries. Both publicly available documents and internal …
The Identification And Exploitation Of Terrorist Financing, Jacob S. Gordon
The Identification And Exploitation Of Terrorist Financing, Jacob S. Gordon
Senior Honors Theses
Terrorism and the threat of terrorist attacks have forced the United States to place a high priority on developing a comprehensive counterterrorism strategy. A crucial component of this overarching strategy focuses on targeting the finances of a terrorist organization, hoping to eliminate or stifle their sources of funding in an effort to render the organization incapable of launching successful operations due to an absence of funding. By analyzing the most common financing options that terrorist groups use, the United States can hone its ability to disrupt the funding operations for terrorist groups. Likewise, developing a method for tracking the laundering …

Blessings And Curses: Israel And Lebanon's Maritime Boundary Dispute In The Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Andrew Shibley
Blessings And Curses: Israel And Lebanon's Maritime Boundary Dispute In The Eastern Mediterranean Sea, Andrew Shibley
Global Business Law Review
This note argues that Israel and Lebanon should submit their maritime border dispute to an arbitral tribunal under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. Before submitting the dispute to the tribunal, the two countries should agree upon an exclusive appellate remedy to be used in the event that at least one country is unsatisfied with the decision of the arbitrators. Alternatively, Israel and Lebanon could employ other dispute resolution options under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, or submit to the International Court of Justice. It is important that Israel and Lebanon …

SJD Dissertations
This dissertation aims to elucidate Saudi Arabia’s mergers and acquisitions (M&A) laws. The dissertation studies and analyzes current Saudi M&A laws with reference to comparative models from different countries and provides recommendations to improve the transparency and efficiency of Saudi Arabia’s M&A laws. Such improvements may help companies attempting to conduct M&A activity in Saudi Arabia address certain barriers and difficulties, which may in turn help to stimulate the Saudi Arabian economy.
