The penalty function method is used to handle the individuals that do not meet the constraint conditions, and the fitness function is recalibrated by the dynamic linear calibration method. An adaptive adjustment mechanism for crossover probability and variation probability is set to modify the genetic algorithm. The cooling idea of the simulated annealing …

The proposed model integrates data on infection rates, transmission patterns, demographic factors, and cost-effectiveness to provide a decision-support framework for policymakers. Using epidemiological data and equity constraints, the model prioritizes high-risk regions and populations while ensuring fair resource distribution. Results indicate that increased funding allocations significantly enhance the potential to …

Simulation-Based Models For Postearthquake Response: A Survey And Research Directions, Abhijit Gosavi, Lauryn A. Spearing, Lesley H. Sneed
Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Computer simulation is increasingly being used by emergency planners as a tool to improve disaster response given that it can model real-world scenarios, such as earthquakes. Although there has been an increase in simulation research focused on disaster response, much of this literature is from disparate fields and across disaster scenarios. To bridge this gap, this paper surveys simulation-based models for post-earthquake response from the year 2000 onward. Advantages of simulation over closed-form statistical models are discussed. Three main subproblems in post-earthquake response models are explored: (1) service distribution (e.g., food, water), (2) infrastructure restoration (at the building and transportation …

Flow And Heat Transfer Experimental Study For 3d-Printed Solar Receiving Tubes With Helical Fins At Internal Surface, Fouad Haddad, Naznin Nuria Afrin, Jianzhi Li, Peiwen Li, Bharath Pidaparthi, Samy Missoum, Ben Xu
Manufacturing & Industrial Engineering Faculty Publications
3D-printing technology was applied to fabricate novel solar thermal collection tubes that have internal heat transfer enhancement fins and external surfaces with high solar absorptivity and low emissivity due to the ability to use different materials in one tube. Helical fins were selected to introduce circumferential flow and thus minimize the circumferential temperature difference of the tube that receives sunlight on one side. The structures of the helical fins were previously optimized from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) analysis with the objective of low entropy production rate by looking for high heat transfer coefficient and relatively lower pressure loss. High-temperature alloy, …

Why Are Fairness Concerns So Important? Lessons From A Last-Mile Transportation System, Yiwei Chen, Hai Wang
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
The Last-Mile Problem refers to the provision of travel service for passengers from the nearest public transportation node to the final destination. The Last-Mile Transportation System (LMTS), which has recently emerged, provides on-demand last-mile transportation service for passengers. We consider an LMTS that consists of two types of passengers, regular-type passengers and special-type passengers (e.g., seniors, disabled people). The valuation of the last-mile service for special-type passengers is statistically higher than the one for regular-type passengers. Passengers incur disutility from waiting for the last-mile service. In this paper, we explore two fairness constraints on special-type passengers: (1) the fare for …

Designing An Interactive Application To Prevent Runway Incursion: A Systems Engineering Approach, Yixuan Cheng, Dahai Liu, Dennis Vincenzi, Donald S. Metscher
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
Runway incursion is a leading cause of serious incidents and accidents at airports. A common cause of runway incursions is unfamiliarity with the airport layout. To address this, we designed an electronically interactive application intended as a practice tool for pilots during flight preparation. The aim of this application is to improve pilots’ familiarity with airports, ultimately helping to reduce runway incursions, with the goals of being interactive, affordable, easily accessible, and designed for use on mobile devices. We applied a systems engineering approach that adheres to human factors engineering principles to ensure user-friendly design and optimization of the interaction …

Undergraduate computer science programs worldwide struggle to attract and retain underrepresented students for many reasons. Culture, stereotype threats, uneven gender and racial representations, lack of role models, and uncertain career prospects for minority groups are among the many reasons behind this situation. Many computer science programs are trying to change course through strategies to foster equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI), aimed at improving outreach, recruitment, admissions, and retention of underrepresented students. EDI approaches may also include modifications to the undergraduate computer science curriculum. However, if not properly planned, these modifications risk amplifying existing stereotypes rather than producing positive change [38]. …

Multi-Uav Deployment And Collaborative Offloading For Large-Scale Iot Systems, Zhiqin Huang, Tianying Lu, Zheyi Chen
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: In large-scale internet-of-things (IoT) systems, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAV) enabled mobile edge computing (MEC) can alleviate the performance constraints on end IoT devices. However, due to the uneven distribution of IoT devices and inefficient problem-solving, how to efficiently perform computation offloading in large-scale IoT systems is a major challenge. Existing solutions generally cannot fit into dynamic multi-UAV scenarios, causing inefficient resource utilization and excessive response delay. To address these important challenges, this paper proposes a novel multi-UAV deployment and collaborative offloading (MUCO) method for large-scale IoT systems. A UAV deployment scheme based on constrained K-Means clustering is designed to …

Sequential Convex Programming Using Safe Flight Corridor For Trajectory Planning Of Uavs, Zhu Wang, Zhenpeng Zhang, Mengtong Zhang, Guangtong Xu
Journal of System Simulation
Abstract: To address the issues of sensitivity to initial values and weak convergence of sequential convex programming(SCP) based time-optimal trajectory planning for UAVs, a SCP method using safety flight corridor, denoted as SFC-SCP(safe flight corridor-sequential convex programming) is proposed. The non-convex obstacle avoidance constraint is converted into linear inequality constraints to improve convergence ability. The rear-end SCP method is used to transform the nonlinear trajectory optimization problem under …
