Many researchers have used different failure criteria in published solder joint reliability studies. Since the reported timeto-failure would be different if different failure criteria were used, it would be difficult to compare the reported reliability life of solder joints from one study to another. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of failure criteria on the reported thermal fatigue life and determine which failure criterion could detect failure sooner. HMDs are becoming common human-machine interface equipment in manned military flight, but introducing this equipment into the overall aircraft escape system poses new and significant system design, development, and test concerns. Although HMDs add capabilities, which improve operator performance, the increased capability is often accompanied by increased head supported mass. The increased mass can amplify the risk of pilot neck injury during ejection when compared to lighter legacy helmets. The Transportation Problem is a classic Operations Research problem where the objective is to determine the schedule for transporting goods from source to destination in a way that minimizes the shipping cost while satisfying supply and demand constraints. Although it can be solved as a Linear Programming problem, other methods exist. Linear Programming makes use of the Simplex Method, an algorithm invented to solve a linear program by progressing from one extreme point of the feasible polyhedron to an adjacent one. Several hospitals face nurse staffing shortages for surgeries. This research focuses on building a system with Baxter robot capable of identifying surgical tools using computer vision and delivering them to the surgeon on demand. This would deal with the issue of nurse unavailability during simple surgical procedures. The key aspects of the project were: testing the accuracies of various Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) in classifying surgical instruments, and programming Baxter to implement a surgical tool delivery system using magnets at the tip of its 7-DOF robotic arms. This project will investigate the local buckling induced fracture behavior of round steel tubes subjected to axial compressive loads, representative of observed failures in buried pipelines during seismic events. Nine initial tests will be conducted across three lengths of round steel tube: 8”, 12”, and 20”. Another twelve tests will be conducted on the lengths of 12” and 20” to test varying initial compressive force upon the round steel tubes. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the surgical safety checklist consists of three parts; sign-in, time-out and sign-out. It has been observed that the sign-out process is the least frequently completed. In this study, because of a concern for the risk of adverse events occurring in the OR, the sign-out process used in a local hospital was redesigned as a web-based application embedded on a desktop computer and on a mobile device. This research uses the reports strategic framework and notional metrics (and additional information) to develop one overall measure of GNDA effectiveness. The potential benefit of one effectiveness measure would be ability to assess and communicate progress over time to the diverse group of national and international stakeholders and decision makers. The objective of this study was to identify the perceptions of both patients and pharmacists about the pharmacist's role in the hospital discharge process. In order to do this, observations were conducted with the patients and interviews were conducted with both patients and pharmacists. During the interviews, both the patients and pharmacists were asked about the pharmacist's role in the hospital discharge process. The interviews were qualitatively analyzed using the in vivo technique. Motivated by the critical role of the inland waterways in the United States' transportation system, this dissertation research focuses on pre- and post- disruption response support when the inland waterway navigation system is disrupted by a natural or manmade event. Following a comprehensive literature review, four research contributions are achieved. The first research contribution formulates and solves a cargo prioritization and terminal allocation problem (CPTAP) that minimizes total value loss of the disrupted barge cargoes on the inland waterway transportation system. This research proposes novel solution techniques for two real world problems. We first consider a patient scheduling problem in a proton therapy facility with deterministic patient arrivals. In order to assess the impacts of several operational constraints, we propose single and multi-criteria linear programming models. In addition, we ensure that the strategic patient mix restrictions predetermined by the decision makers are also enforced within the planning horizon. We study the mathematical structures of the single criteria model with strict patient mix restrictions and derive analytical equations for the optimal solutions under several operational restrictions. Planning for sufficient surgical capacity at a hospital requires that many tactical and operational decisions be made before the day of surgery. Typically, blocks of time in operating rooms (ORs) are assigned and specific surgical cases are placed in rooms. The hospital monitors utilization to determine the schedule's effectiveness in balancing the risk of overtime with idle time. Automating the process of finding good parameter settings is important in the design of high-performing algorithms. These automatic processes can generally be categorized into off-line and on-line methods. Off-line configuration consists in learning and selecting the best setting in a training phase, and usually fixes it while solving an instance. This paper presents a hybrid metaheuristic for solving the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP). The proposed algorithm involves using the Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) to construct an initial solution, and then using a hybrid Simulated Annealing and Tabu Search (SA-TS) algorithm to further improve the solution. Experimental results show that the hybrid metaheuristic is able to obtain good quality solutions for QAPLIB test problems within reasonable computation time. The proposed algorithm is extended to solve the Generalized Quadratic Assignment Problem (GQAP), with an emphasis on modelling and solving a practical problem, namely an examination timetabling problem. This paper presents a generalization of the Orienteering Problem, the Time-Dependent Orienteering Problem (TDOP) which is based on the real-life application of providing automatic tour guidance to a large leisure facility such as a theme park. In this problem, the travel time between two nodes depends on the time when the trip starts. We formulate the problem as an integer linear programming (ILP) model. We then develop various heuristics in a step by step fashion: greedy construction, local search and variable neighborhood descent, and two versions of iterated local search. The patrol scheduling problem is concerned with assigning security teams to different stations for distinct time intervals while respecting a limited number of contractual constraints. The objective is to minimise the total distance travelled while maximising the coverage of the stations with respect to their security requirement levels.
