Nano-Second Pulsed Laser Ablation Of Inconel 718 And Mmpcd For Simultaneous Optimal Ablation Rate And Surface Quality, Ahmed Elkaseer, Islam Abdelgaliel, Jon Lambarri, Iban Quintana, Steffen Scholz, Mohamed Aly

Mechanical Engineering

This study investigates the ablation performance of Inconel 718, a nickel-based superalloy, and metalmatrix polycrystalline diamond (MMPCD), a super composite, using a nano-second (ns) pulsed laseracross a range of ablation conditions. Single trenches varying in energy fluence and scanning speedswere created, analyzing the experimental responses in terms of ablation rate and surface roughness.Using regression techniques, models were developed to understand these relationships. Four multi-objective optimization algorithms, weighted value grey wolf optimizer (WVGWO), multi-objectivePareto search (MOPS), multi-objective genetic algorithm (MOGA), and multi-objective sunfloweroptimization (MOSFO), were employed to optimize these models. Key findings include MMPCDachieving the highest ablation rates at maximum fluence …

Expandable And Retractable Wheel Design, Ethan Fortenberry, Emily Cottrell, Keegan Martin, Benjamin Mcconnell

Mechanical Engineering

Our sponsor, Jeremy Goren, wants to see his patented expandable wheel design come to life. He requires a functional final product actuated by linear actuators and with a continuous, circular outer shell. The overall design can be broken up into 2 parts: the inner hub and outer shell. The wheel's shell will consist of a 12-piece outer shell that guides the 6 inner shell pieces. The outer shell pieces will be connected via a UBracket. The hub will consist of 3 identical parts that will hold 2 linear actuators each. The pieces will be bolted together to create 1 singular …

On The Correlation Between Pre-Processing Workflow And Dimensional Accuracy Of 3d Printed Parts In High-Precision Material Jetting, Karin Chen, Ahmed Elkaseer, Steffen Scholz, Veit Hagenmeyer Jul 2024

On The Correlation Between Pre-Processing Workflow And Dimensional Accuracy Of 3d Printed Parts In High-Precision Material Jetting, Karin Chen, Ahmed Elkaseer, Steffen Scholz, Veit Hagenmeyer

Mechanical Engineering

Material Jetting (MJ) is distinguished in the additive manufacturing field for its ability to create accurate multi-material functional objects with features in the range of few micrometers. Analyzing the impact of each step in MJ from virtual design to 3D printed object on the process response is essential for optimizing the technology’s capabilities. The current state-of-the-art reveals a gap in MJ regarding the fundamental understanding of the correlation between the pre-processing workflow and the geometrical and dimensional accuracy. This study aims to bridge this gap by examining factors such as utilization of different CAD software with diverse working principles, part-based …

Focused Led Sintering, Dylan Defazio, Nilav Maulik, Branden Majors, Michael Fontillas

Mechanical Engineering

This report provides a detailed overview of the final design of our light-emitting diode (LED) focusing system. Our system incorporates a converging lens and a specially designed "glass funnel," which acts as a thick fiber optic that narrows the light to a fine point through internal reflection. The glass components of our system are precisely housed in a part made using advanced computer-numeric controlled (CNC) Mill and CNC Lathe manufacturing processes. This ensures high precision and durability of the overall system. Our LED focusing system is designed with a 60-watt stage light. The decision to use a glass funnel as …

Liftwalker, Kai A. De La Cruz, Lexie Caterine, Adam Monroe, Jame Whealan

Mechanical Engineering

The LiftWalker’s purpose is to lift users with degenerative diseases from a seated to standing position and support them as they practice the motion of walking as a form of physical therapy. The current LiftWalker is upward of $5,000 so we redesigned the LiftWalker to be more accessible around the world. This meant using affordable and accessible materials and manufacturing processes. To achieve this, we made our design mostly out of bike parts and off-the-shelf components. When it came to the lift system, we found that to maintain a safe and comfortable design it was best to purchase a trailer …

Prediction Of Defects In Deep Drawn Rectangular Parts Using Finite Element Analysis (Fea) And Response Surface Methodology (Rsm), Mustafa M. Semman Eng., Mostafa Shazly, Mohamed H. Gadallah, Tamer Adel Mohamed, Abdallah S. Wifi May 2024

Prediction Of Defects In Deep Drawn Rectangular Parts Using Finite Element Analysis (Fea) And Response Surface Methodology (Rsm), Mustafa M. Semman Eng., Mostafa Shazly, Mohamed H. Gadallah, Tamer Adel Mohamed, Abdallah S. Wifi

Mechanical Engineering

Abstract. Deep drawing defects such as thinning and earing present challenges to sheet metal forming industry while designers tend to favour the usage of new materials and production processes. The present work introduces an integrated approach using Design of Experiment, FEA experimentation and RSM to study the effect of deep drawing process parameters and resulting defects associated with sheet metal forming processes such as thinning and earing particularly in deep drawing of non-circular parts. The Design of Experiment (DoE) is used to generate a series of experiments for different process parameters in deep drawn rectangular products which are then simulated …

Laboratory Glovebox, Jackson T. Tenne, Noah Fitzgerald, Scott Stirling, Danny Ho Sep 2023

Laboratory Glovebox, Jackson T. Tenne, Noah Fitzgerald, Scott Stirling, Danny Ho

Mechanical Engineering

The Laboratory Glovebox project aimed to create an affordable, functional, ready to use, airtight workstation enabling Dr. Ramanan Sritharan to continue his research of the mechanical properties of nanomaterials. When airborne, nanomaterials are a health risk if inhaled, so the design requires a hermetic seal to protect the user. The design was meant to emulate features of the glovebox used by Dr. Sritharan during his PhD research, but was optimized to meet a budget of $3000, much cheaper than comparable alternatives. Key design features included acrylic panels, a transfer chamber, glove mounts, and a main access door, all sealed to …

Disc Golf Throwing Robot, Nevada S. Schultz, Sydney M. Lewis, Erick Edmundo Daza, Rachel Alysse Greenberg, Peter M. Kean

Mechanical Engineering

Disc golf companies need better methods to test disc flight. The scope of this project is to create a disc throwing robot that can throw a disc golf driver 450-500 feet, with control over the speed, spin, and release angle. Research shows that multiple disc-throwing products exist; however, none meet the full requirements of this project. The Cal Poly senior project design team created a proof-of-concept machine. This prototype started as a two-wheel mechanism. Eventually, a third wheel was added, allowing for complete control over disc spin. The three-wheel prototype reached 62 mph when perfectly calibrated. The prototype is accurate, …

Rotating Backing Brush, Caleb Savard, David Dalal, Max Allred, Mathis Weyrich Dec 2022

Rotating Backing Brush, Caleb Savard, David Dalal, Max Allred, Mathis Weyrich

Mechanical Engineering

In the final steps of GAF’s shingle production process, small asphalt particles called fines are applied. Some fines adhere well to the shingle sheet, while others temporarily stick only to fall off the sheet further down the manufacturing line. As a result, the shingle plant floor is covered in fines that have fallen due to vibrations and gravity. The technicians and engineers at GAF want a cleaner working environment and to potentially reuse the loose fines. We are a senior project team that solved this problem by designing a system to remove and collect loose fines. In this document, the …
