Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Recent studies on precipitation-hardened high-entropy alloys (HEAs) demonstrate their high strength and thermal stability, making them promising materials for high-temperature structural applications such as nuclear reactors. However, many existing HEAs contain cobalt (Co), which is unsuitable for nuclear applications because of the long-term activation issue of Co. Co is also expensive and considered a critical material for other applications. Therefore, it is desired to exclude Co from the composition. a Co-free (Fe0.3Ni0.3Mn0.3Cr0.1)88Ti4Al8 HEA was developed and studied in this work. in contrast to previous Co-free HEAs, this alloy is close to Equi atomic in its composition and promises a more …

Anisotropic Material Behavior Of 3d Printed Fiber Composites, Jordan Garcia
Anisotropic Material Behavior Of 3d Printed Fiber Composites, Jordan Garcia
Theses and Dissertations--Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Literature has shown that 3D printed composites may have highly anisotropic mechanical properties due to variation in microstructure as a result of filament deposition process. Laminate composite theory, which is already used for composite products, has been proposed as an effective method for quantifying these mechanical characteristics. Starting with the analysis of comparing the printing orientation of premanufactured carbon fiber reinforced filament, the mechanical properties of 3D printed objects were examined. The mechanical properties changed not only as a result of machine choice, but how the sample is oriented along the printing bed. The analysis continued with looking at the …

Multiple Objective Function Optimization And Trade Space Analysis, Yifan Xu
Multiple Objective Function Optimization And Trade Space Analysis, Yifan Xu
All Theses
Optimization can assist in obtaining the best possible solution to a design problem by varying related variables under given constraints. It can be applied in many practical applications, including engineering, during the design process. The design time can be further reduced by the application of automated optimization methods. Since the required resource and desired benefit can be translated to a function of variables, optimization can be viewed as the process of finding the variable values to reach the function maxima or minima. A Multiple Objective Optimization (MOO) problem is when there is more than one desired function that needs to …

The Temperature Dependent Mechanical Response Of M250 Maraging Steel And Its Implications On Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing, Frank M. Brinkley Iii
Theses and Dissertations
Wire-arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) is becoming increasingly common for large scale additive manufacturing (AM) applications because of its high deposition rate (2-3 kg/hr.). The rapid temperature changes and subsequent evolution of mechanical properties during AM can lead to large distortion and residual stresses. Finite element modeling of the AM process shows promise to minimize part distortion and residual stresses through improved path planning and process parameter optimization. However, accurate material properties of M250 before and after heat treatment are needed to properly characterize the property evolution from annealed to AM, to aged. Due to limited data on annealed M250, this …

To add to this ecosystem, this project is focused on the design …
Examining The Different Snap-Through Characteristics Of Bistable Cfrp Composite Laminates, Vishrut Deshpande
Examining The Different Snap-Through Characteristics Of Bistable Cfrp Composite Laminates, Vishrut Deshpande
All Theses
Bistable carbon fiber composites, whose bistability arises from having asymmetric fiber layouts in different layers, have shown immense potential for use in shape morphing and adaptive structure applications. While many studies in this field focus on these composite laminates’ external shapes at the two stable states, their snap-through behavior of shifting from one stable shape to the other remains a critical aspect to be investigated in complete detail. Moreover, symmetric loading conditions have been extensively studied based on the classical lamination theory, but the asymmetric loading conditions received far less attention. Therefore, this study examines an asymmetric, localized point load …
