Thermal Management With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Under Extreme Applications, Devon Hardy
Thermal Management With Supercritical Carbon Dioxide Under Extreme Applications, Devon Hardy
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
A unique challenge in thermal system design is minimizing the power required to operate cooling systems while maintaining effective heat removal. Traditional cooling systems utilize single-phase fluids where the heat transfer mechanisms are well understood. To meet a variety of cooling demands, a range of technologies are available, including microchannel forced convection, jet impingement, porous media, nanofluids, pin fin arrays, and film cooling, each offering distinct advantages and limitations. While the performance of single- or two-phase cooling systems are generally predictable, in extreme thermal environments, new cooling solutions are needed to improve overall system efficiency and reliability.
Supercritical fluids, particularly …

A Novel Intelligent Thermal Feedback Framework For Electric Motor Protection In Embedded Robotic Systems, Mohamed Shili, Salah Hammedi, Hicham Chaoui, Khaled Nouri
Electrical & Computer Engineering Faculty Publications
As robotic systems advance in autonomy and sophistication while being used in uncertain environments, the challenge of building reliable and robust electric motors that are embedded into robotic systems has never been a more important engineering problem. Thermal distress caused by extended operation or excessive loading can negatively affect a motor’s performance and efficiency and lead to catastrophic hardware failure. This paper proposes a novel intelligent control framework that includes real-time thermal feedback for hybrid electric motors that are embedded into robotic systems. The framework relies on adaptive control techniques and lightweight machine learning techniques to estimate internal motor temperatures …
Investigation Of Conductive Die-Top Thermal Capacitors During Short Circuit Operation Of Silicon Carbide Devices, Youssef Abotaleb
Investigation Of Conductive Die-Top Thermal Capacitors During Short Circuit Operation Of Silicon Carbide Devices, Youssef Abotaleb
Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Silicon carbide (SiC) power devices have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their superior thermal and electrical properties compared to traditional silicon devices. However, SiC power devices suffer from severe reliability issues arising from their mechanical properties. This is because the Young's modulus of SiC is about three times larger than that of silicon, which correspondingly raises the mechanical stresses acting on the bonding structure, often leading to device failure under power shock events.
Traditional packaging materials and designs tend to constrain SiC performance, as hot-spot temperature resulting from a power shock is one of the key factors …
Mathematical Modeling Of Heat And Mass Transfer In Multilayer Systems, Girish Krishnan
Mathematical Modeling Of Heat And Mass Transfer In Multilayer Systems, Girish Krishnan
Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Dissertations - Archive
Multilayer systems are commonly found in a number of engineering devices like Li-ion cells and vertically integrated semiconductor devices. Li-ion cells are widely used for various engineering applications, but they come with a drawback in the form of thermal runaway, and thermal abuse is one of the scenarios that leads to thermal runaway. On the other hand, heterogenous integration in chip and package level architectures is being implemented to keep up with Moore’s law. Modeling of heat and mass transfer in these systems is a topic of interest to improve performance and reliability.
The first segment of this dissertation will …
Natural Convection Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Sierpinski Carpet Fractal Fins In Horizontal And Vertical Orientations, Ayomide Ayoola
Natural Convection Heat Transfer Characteristics Of Sierpinski Carpet Fractal Fins In Horizontal And Vertical Orientations, Ayomide Ayoola
College of Graduate Studies: Theses & Dissertations
This study investigates the thermal performance of fins with perforations inspired by the Sierpinski carpet fractal pattern under natural convection conditions in both vertical and horizontal orientations. The objective is to analyze the effects of fractal iteration levels on three primary performance metrics: efficiency, effectiveness, and effectiveness per unit mass. Experimental evaluations were conducted for fractal fins from iterations 0 through 4, utilizing aluminum material, with each fin heated to controlled conditions. The results reveal that efficiency generally decreases with higher fractal iterations, reflecting increased thermal resistance associated with greater porosity and complex geometry. However, effectiveness per unit mass improves …

Spacecraft thermal management is critical for ensuring mission success, as it affects the performance and longevity of onboard systems. A comprehensive overview of the state of the art in spacecraft thermal control solutions, as well as a design methodology framework for efficient and effective thermal management, is provided. Various thermal control solutions, including coatings, insulation, heat pipes, phase-change materials, conductive materials, thermal devices, actively pumped fluid loops, and radiators, are discussed along with the primary sources of heat loading in space. The need for accurate modeling and analysis of the thermal environment to identify appropriate thermal control solutions and design …
Durability Of Non-Metallic Materials For Additively Manufactured Heat Spreader Fabrication, Rafael Estrella
Durability Of Non-Metallic Materials For Additively Manufactured Heat Spreader Fabrication, Rafael Estrella
Mechanical Engineering Undergraduate Honors Theses
Power electronics are necessary to convert power from DC sources for AC applications. As this technology trends toward smaller packaging for denser power loads, the increased electrical losses result in deleterious excess heat. Thermal management devices are required to prevent the effects of thermal runaway from shortening the longevity of these modules. Nonmetallic jet impingement heat spreaders provide several benefits in terms of weight and performance over conventional cold plates while not accentuating EMI from the switches in the power module; however, the polymer makeup of the materials previously used for fabricating these devices raises durability concerns under the high …
Design And Simulation Of Passive Thermal Management System For Lithium-Ion Battery Packs On An Unmanned Ground Vehicle, Kevin Kenneth Parsons
Design And Simulation Of Passive Thermal Management System For Lithium-Ion Battery Packs On An Unmanned Ground Vehicle, Kevin Kenneth Parsons
Master's Theses
The transient thermal response of a 15-cell, 48 volt, lithium-ion battery pack for an unmanned ground vehicle was simulated with ANSYS Fluent. Heat generation rates and specific heat capacity of a single cell were experimentally measured and used as input to the thermal model. A heat generation load was applied to each battery and natural convection film boundary conditions were applied to the exterior of the enclosure. The buoyancy-driven natural convection inside the enclosure was modeled along with the radiation heat transfer between internal components. The maximum temperature of the batteries reached 65.6 °C after 630 seconds of usage …
Air Cooling For Aecm Module, Final Project Report, Kevin Whipp, Abraham Bruno Caulk
Air Cooling For Aecm Module, Final Project Report, Kevin Whipp, Abraham Bruno Caulk
Mechanical Engineering
Advancements in electronics have created the need for improved cooling standards. The AECM standard, created to replace the antiquated ARINC 600 specification for aircraft, draws inspiration from a cooling specification known as VITA 48.2. The ARINC standard is in early stages of development and this project researches the feasibility of using air as a convective fluid instead of a liquid, the fluid used in the VITA specification.
A performance factor calculated from the ratio of the heat dissipated by convective heat exchanger plates over the power used to cause forced convective flow over said plates helps to quantify the effectiveness …
